I begin by naming two or three claims the page should be useful for. Then I decide whether each claim is a fact, definition, comparison, recommendation, synthesis, or example. This prevents a recommendation from masquerading as an official rule. It also tells the writer what evidence is required and tells the reviewer what to challenge.
Use the claim type to choose the right evidence. A source can be credible and still be the wrong source for the sentence you wrote.

For current product and platform claims, I start with the source that controls the information. Google Search Central is the natural source for Google's AI feature guidance. OpenAI's publisher documentation is the natural source for OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT search inclusion guidance. Bing Webmaster Tools is the natural source for what its AI Performance report measures.
Primary sources are not automatically complete. A product page may describe a feature without explaining a limitation. A policy page may use a term differently from a user's search. I read the relevant passage, record the date, and note the scope. If I need context from a secondary source, I label it as context rather than allowing it to silently stand in for the original authority.
Do not inflate authority by collecting many links that repeat the same statement. Three independent sources can be useful when they represent different evidence. Six articles copying one announcement are still one underlying claim. The reader needs a source trail, not an impressive-looking number of references.

Citation work is not finished when an outbound link is added. I use this lifecycle to keep the page focused and maintainable.

For current claims, include the time boundary when it matters. “As of August 2026, Bing Webmaster Tools describes AI Performance as a report of visible citation activity” is more defensible than “Bing's AI report measures rankings.” The first sentence is narrower and reflects the product's own limitation.
Recommendations should be labeled as recommendations. “I would use the report to identify pages worth reviewing” is different from “the report proves these pages are authoritative.” The distinction preserves trust and prevents a generated answer from repeating an inference as a fact.

An answer system may extract a sentence without importing every qualification around it. That makes context part of citation optimization. Put the audience, country, version, date, and limitation close to the claim when those details change its meaning.
For example, a statement that an AI tool is free may mean free to start, free with a quota, free for personal use, or free only during a trial. A statement that a crawler can access a site may depend on robots rules and the product's own behavior. A statistic may describe a sample rather than the entire population. A citation should make these boundaries visible.
I use headings and labels to help. “What Bing AI Performance measures” is safer than “Bing ranking data.” “What OpenAI says publishers can do” is safer than “How to rank in ChatGPT.” Honest framing does not weaken a page. It makes the page more useful to readers who need to make a decision.
A page that only repeats the official source is a summary. It may be accurate, but it gives the reader little reason to visit your site instead of the original. The job of a publisher is to add useful interpretation, application, comparison, or workflow without pretending to replace the source.
For a citation guide, original value can be a claim register, a before-and-after passage, a source hierarchy, a review process, a decision table, or a measured example. For a tool review, it can be a test with stated inputs and limitations. For a local page, it can be context that reflects the actual audience. Originality is not a license to invent facts; it is a reasoned way to help the reader use verified information.
This is also why word count should remain a guardrail rather than a goal. A substantive page may need 2,500 words because it contains a workflow, examples, and edge cases. A page does not become more cite-worthy when it repeats the same claim in ten forms. Information gain is the standard.

Choose the three claims you want the page to support. Highlight them in the draft. For each claim, answer five questions: Is it stated plainly? Is the subject named? Does the nearby source support the exact scope? Is the date or condition visible? Does the page add a useful next step?
If the page fails, fix the claim or the page. Do not respond by adding a generic FAQ section. A useful FAQ answers a real edge case that the main article does not already cover. Otherwise it creates length without improving the evidence trail.
Prompts are useful when they expose gaps. I might ask a model to classify each sentence as fact, inference, recommendation, or example; list claims that need a source; compare the draft with a source register; or identify where a caveat disappears. I do not ask it to invent citations, simulate a test, or promise a ranking result.

Do not claim a citation because a page contains a schema object. Do not claim that a source link passes authority in a measurable way unless the evidence supports that statement.
