Does the free ChatGPT have GPT-5.5?
Quick answer
No. GPT-5.5 (launched April 2026) is limited to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise. Free users stay on the older GPT-5.3 Instant, and OpenAI has not announced a free-tier rollout of GPT-5.5.
The free plan does not include GPT-5.5. When GPT-5.5 launched on April 23, 2026, it rolled out to the paid tiers (Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise) across both ChatGPT and Codex, while the free tier remained on GPT-5.3 Instant. As of now, OpenAI has not announced when or whether GPT-5.5 will reach free users.
This matters because the model is the biggest quality difference between free and paid. GPT-5.5 and its Thinking variant handle complex reasoning, long tasks, and nuanced instructions noticeably better than the older model, so on hard problems the gap is real, not cosmetic. For simple questions and drafts, GPT-5.3 on free is still perfectly capable.
So if your reason for wanting to upgrade is specifically access to the newest, strongest model, that alone is a valid case for Plus at $20, since there is no free path to GPT-5.5 today. If your work is light and the older model handles it, staying free is reasonable.
The pattern historically is that model access trickles down to free over time, so a future GPT-5.5 free rollout is plausible but not promised. For now, GPT-5.5 is a paid feature.
