What is ChatGPT Deep Research, and is it any good?
Quick answer
Deep Research is a Plus and Pro feature that turns a prompt into a thorough, cited report by autonomously browsing and synthesizing many sources. It is excellent for saving hours on research, and it is one of the strongest reasons to pay for ChatGPT.
Deep Research is ChatGPT's autonomous research mode. Instead of a quick answer, you give it a research question and it spends several minutes browsing many sources, cross-referencing them, and producing a structured, cited report. It effectively does the desk research a person would do across dozens of tabs, then writes it up.
It is genuinely good, and for many professionals it is the single feature that justifies a subscription. Market scans, competitive analysis, literature reviews, buying decisions, and background briefs that used to take hours come back in minutes as an organized document with sources you can verify. Available on Plus with a solid monthly allowance and far more on Pro, it is a real productivity lever, not a gimmick.
The important discipline is verification. Deep Research is excellent at breadth and synthesis, but like any AI it can occasionally misread a source or carry forward an error, so any fact you will act on or publish deserves a check against the cited original. Treated as a fast, thorough research assistant whose work you review, it is outstanding.
If research is a core part of your job, Deep Research alone can make Plus worth it, and heavy research users are the clearest candidates for the far larger Pro allowance.
