Read the guideWhen ChatGPT says memory is full, its saved memory has hit a cap and it stops adding new memories until you free space. OpenAI does not publish the exact limit, but in practice it lands around 1,200 to 1,400 words of saved facts total. Nothing is broken and nothing else is lost: clearing memory does not touch your chat history, Projects, or Custom Instructions. You fix it by deleting individual memories, clearing them all, or telling ChatGPT to forget specific things in the chat. The bigger lever is prevention: Custom Instructions do not count toward the memory cap, so they work as a reliable overflow for the facts you always want applied. This guide covers the fix and how to stop hitting the wall again.
A banner or reply says 'Memory is full' or that ChatGPT can forget existing memories to make space
New details you ask it to remember are not saved
'Please remember this' is acknowledged but nothing new appears in Manage memories
ChatGPT stops referencing preferences it used to apply automatically
The Manage memories list looks long and cluttered with stale facts
Saved memory has a finite, unpublished limit (roughly 1,200 to 1,400 words). Once you hit it, ChatGPT stops adding new memories until you clear space. It does not expand no matter your plan.
Memory silently saves details over months, old projects, one-off preferences, facts that are no longer true. These pile up and consume the cap even though you no longer need them.
ChatGPT has two systems: explicit saved memories (capped, editable in Settings) and a separate ability to reference past chats. A 'full' message is only about the first, but people assume all recall has stopped.
There is no paid tier that raises the saved-memory cap, so users who upgrade expecting more room still see 'full'. The real overflow is Custom Instructions, which do not count.
When to try: First, when you want to keep useful memories
On web: click your profile icon (bottom left), Settings, Personalization, Manage memories. You will see every saved memory with a trash icon. Delete the stale ones (finished projects, outdated facts, one-off requests). This frees space while keeping the memories that matter.
When to try: When you know exactly what to remove
Without leaving the chat, tell ChatGPT 'forget that I work at [company]' or 'delete the memory about my old project'. It removes the matching memory and confirms. Fastest way to clear something specific mid-task.
When to try: When the list is mostly stale and you want to start fresh
For a clean slate: Settings, Personalization, Manage memories, Clear all memories. Confirm, and every saved memory on your account is deleted. This does NOT delete your chat history, Projects, or Custom Instructions.
When to try: To offload facts you never want forgotten
Custom Instructions do not count toward the memory cap. Put the things you always want applied (your role, tone, formatting preferences, key context) in Settings, Personalization, Custom Instructions. This is a free overflow area that memory cannot fill up.
When to try: When you want to keep the useful facts but reset the clutter
Before wiping memories, ask ChatGPT to 'list everything you currently remember about me'. Copy that, keep the still-true facts, and re-add only those (via Custom Instructions or by letting memory re-save them). This preserves signal while dropping noise.
When to try: If you are on Plus or Pro and want less manual upkeep
Since October 2025, Plus and Pro auto-manage memories on web, prioritizing recent memories to help prevent hitting the cap. Make sure memory is enabled in Settings, Personalization, and periodically prune manually anyway for anything sensitive.
Put durable facts (role, preferences, recurring context) in Custom Instructions, which do not count toward the cap
Prune Manage memories every month or two, delete finished projects and outdated facts
Be deliberate about what you ask it to remember, not every detail needs saving
Keep a personal note or Project doc for context you can paste in, rather than relying on memory for everything
This is a self-service issue, support cannot raise the cap and there is no paid upgrade that does. Contact OpenAI via help.openai.com only if Manage memories will not load, memories reappear after deletion, or memory refuses to save anything even when the list is clearly not full, which points to an account-side bug rather than a full cap.
OpenAI does not publish an exact number, but in practice saved memory holds roughly 1,200 to 1,400 words of facts total. Once you hit it, new memories stop saving until you free space. You cannot pay to increase it.
No. Clearing memory does not delete your chat history, your Projects, or your Custom Instructions. It only removes the saved facts listed under Settings, Personalization, Manage memories.
Delete only the stale memories in Manage memories, and move the facts you always want applied into Custom Instructions, which do not count toward the memory cap. That keeps your useful context while clearing the wall.
Because no plan raises the saved-memory cap. Plus and Pro auto-manage memories (since October 2025) but the ceiling is the same. Use Custom Instructions as your overflow for permanent facts.
Just tell ChatGPT in the chat, for example 'forget that I live in Lagos' or 'delete the memory about my old job'. It removes that memory and confirms, no need to open Settings.
