Under Settings, Personalization, Memory there are two independent switches: 'Reference saved memories' and 'Reference chat history'. Either can flip off after a client update, a device change, or a settings sync from another device on the same account. If saved memory is off, nothing new is stored.
Saved memory has a finite capacity (heavy users hit it around a few hundred entries depending on length). Once full, ChatGPT stops reliably storing new facts, and older memories can be overwritten with no notification. Freeing space restores saving.
Memory is disabled in Temporary Chat by design, nothing from that conversation is saved. If memory 'is not working', you may simply be in a Temporary Chat.

After asking ChatGPT to remember something, refresh and reopen Settings, Personalization, Manage memories to confirm the new entry is actually listed. If it appears after a reload, it saved fine and the app just lagged.

If memory keeps refusing to store something important, put it in Custom Instructions instead (Settings, Personalization, Custom Instructions). It is always applied, does not count toward the memory cap, and does not depend on the memory feature working.
