The realistic outcome is that the text is gone. What matters now is checking whether it truly was Temporary Chat rather than something recoverable, salvaging whatever fragments still exist, and turning the mode off so it does not catch you twice.

When to try: Immediately, if the chat is still visible
If the conversation is still on screen, stop and copy it now. Select all the text, paste it into a document, and save. Once that tab closes or refreshes, there is no second chance. Copy first, troubleshoot afterwards.
When to try: Within minutes of losing the chat, before restarting the browser
If you have not closed the browser, try the back button or the tab history (Ctrl+Shift+T reopens a recently closed tab). A restored tab occasionally still holds the rendered conversation. This works infrequently and only within the same browser session, but it costs nothing to try.

Start a fresh chat and check that no Temporary Chat label is shown, then send a message and confirm the conversation appears in the sidebar. Temporary mode is toggled from the model or chat menu at the top of the conversation, so verify the state each time you start work that matters.

You almost certainly still have your own inputs: the documents, code, or notes you pasted in. Start a fresh normal chat, provide the same material, and state the conclusions you remember reaching so the model can rebuild from there rather than from scratch.

Settings, then Data controls, then Export data will send you everything associated with your account. Temporary Chats will not be in it, which also serves as confirmation of what happened. It is worth doing if you want certainty before giving up.

For anything you would be upset to lose, paste the output into a document as you go. Even with history on, chats can be lost to account issues, accidental deletion, and sync problems. The only durable copy is one outside the platform.
When to try: When separation, not deletion, was the actual goal
If you reached for Temporary Chat to keep a topic separate rather than truly ephemeral, use a Project instead. It keeps that work in its own space with its own instructions and files, and the conversations are saved normally.
