Generative AI is artificial intelligence that produces new things: it writes text, draws images, composes music, generates video and writes code. You give it a prompt and it creates original output that did not exist before. ChatGPT writing an essay, Midjourney making an image and Suno composing a song are all generative AI. It is a subset of AI focused on creation rather than only prediction or classification.
Traditional AI is like a librarian who can find and sort books; generative AI is like an author who can write a new one. Both are useful, but they do different jobs. A spam filter (discriminative AI) decides whether an email is spam; a generative AI writes the email in the first place.
Generative AI refers to models that learn the underlying distribution of training data and can sample new instances from it. Key model families include large language models (transformer-based, for text and code), diffusion models (for images, audio and video), and generative adversarial networks (GANs, now largely superseded by diffusion for images). These models are typically trained with self-supervised objectives on massive datasets, then aligned via fine-tuning and human feedback. Generative AI contrasts with discriminative AI, which learns decision boundaries to classify or predict labels rather than generate new samples.
Generate essays, emails, summaries and answers from a prompt.
Create original images from a text description.
Generate realistic speech and full songs.
Write and complete software from natural-language instructions.
AI is the broad field of machines performing tasks that need intelligence, including things like spam filters, recommendation engines and fraud detection. Generative AI is a subset focused specifically on creating new content. All generative AI is AI, but most AI in daily use (search ranking, maps, face unlock) is not generative.
Yes. ChatGPT is a generative AI application built on large language models. It generates new text in response to your prompts rather than retrieving fixed answers. Image tools like Midjourney and music tools like Suno are also generative AI, just for different types of content.
The technology developed over years, but it reached the mainstream in late 2022 with the public launch of ChatGPT, which reached 100 million users within two months. Image generators like DALL-E and Midjourney and the broader wave of tools followed, making 'generative AI' a household term through 2023 to 2026.
A neural network trained on massive text data to understand and generate human-like language.
πA branch of AI where systems learn patterns from data and improve at a task, instead of being explicitly programmed with rules.
βοΈThe skill of writing instructions to AI models to get the best possible output.
πA technique that lets AI models look up information before answering, improving accuracy and reducing hallucinations.
