A useful resume prompt tells the AI what you did, which role you are applying for, and what kind of edit you want. Give it enough detail to describe your contribution accurately. If a result or metric is missing, ask for a question you can answer rather than a number it can guess.

These templates can be adapted for ChatGPT and other AI writing tools. Outputs will vary, and a polished sentence can still contain an error. Start with one section, compare the draft with your source notes, and keep only changes you can explain confidently in an interview.

Three ways to use ChatGPT prompts for resume success

How to Use These Prompts

1

Prepare a fact bank

Collect your exact job titles and dates, responsibilities, projects, tools, and outcomes. Add numbers only when you can support them. A specific description of your contribution is useful even when no reliable metric is available.

2

Share only what the task needs

Remove contact details, references' information, customer names, and confidential employer material before pasting text into an AI tool. Use neutral labels while drafting, and restore accurate details in your own final document. Check the tool's privacy controls and your employer's rules first. For ChatGPT, consult the current Data Controls guidance.

3

Replace the placeholders

Add your source notes and the relevant job description. If you do not know an answer, say “unknown” and ask the tool to leave it out of the draft.

4

Review the draft and final file

Compare each claim with your fact bank. Check the exported document and any fields filled by the application form. Keep a copy of the exact resume you submit.

What should you ask the AI to do?

Your taskUseful outputYour check
Rewrite bulletsRevised bullets paired with the source facts usedDid the wording change your level of responsibility?
Tailor to a jobA requirement-by-requirement evidence mapIs each claimed skill supported by your experience?
Write a summaryA short draft based on relevant supplied factsDoes it imply a title, credential, or seniority you do not have?
Review formattingIssues visible in the supplied text or fileCan you read the exported file and verify the application fields?

Choose a tool based on the inputs it can read and the privacy requirements of your task. This guide does not establish a best model or a hiring advantage for any product.

Worked example: turn a vague bullet into supported evidence

This is a fictional, privacy-safe teaching example. The sample output is written to demonstrate the review process; it is not a recorded model test or a real applicant's result.

The source notes

  • Current title: Customer Support Associate
  • Existing bullet: “Helped the team with customer onboarding.”
  • Work performed: Sent onboarding emails, answered setup questions, and maintained a shared onboarding checklist
  • Verified scope for this example: Supported 18 new customer accounts during one quarter
  • Contribution boundary: A manager owned the onboarding process; the associate did not manage a team
  • Tools used: Email and a shared spreadsheet
  • Unknown: Change in activation rate, retention, revenue, or time saved
  • Fictional target-role requirement: “Coordinate customer onboarding and maintain accurate account records”

Copyable prompt: rewrite with an evidence trail

Rewrite with an evidence trail

Rewrite my existing resume bullet for the target requirement below. Use only the source notes. Do not turn support work into ownership or team leadership. Do not add tools, achievements, dates, or metrics. Produce: (1) two bullet options, each under 25 words; (2) a source note supporting each factual claim; and (3) any unanswered question that could improve the draft. Leave unknown outcomes out of the bullets. Existing bullet: [paste bullet] Source notes: [paste facts and contribution boundaries] Target requirement: [paste the relevant job-description text] Use only facts I provide. Do not invent or estimate achievements, metrics, skills, credentials, dates, titles, personal motivations, or company facts. Preserve my actual contribution and responsibility. If information is missing, ask a question separately and leave the unsupported claim out of the draft.

Illustrative output

Option A: “Supported onboarding for 18 new customer accounts in one quarter by sending setup emails, answering questions, and maintaining a shared checklist.”

Option B: “Maintained a shared onboarding checklist and answered setup questions while supporting 18 new customer accounts in one quarter.”

Evidence check:

  • “18 new customer accounts in one quarter” comes directly from the example's verified scope
  • Emails, setup questions, and the checklist are in the work notes
  • “Supported” preserves the associate's contribution boundary
  • Neither version claims a revenue, retention, or efficiency result

Open question: Is there a recorded outcome from this work that you can verify and are allowed to share? If not, the specific activity and scope are enough for this draft.

A version to reject

“Led onboarding strategy for 18 customers, increasing retention by 30%.”

The source notes do not support either leading the strategy or the retention result. An impressive sentence is not a reason to keep an unsupported claim.

Copyable prompt: repair an overstated draft

Repair an overstated draft

Compare this draft with my source notes. Quote each unsupported or overstated claim, explain the mismatch, and rewrite the draft using supported facts only. Preserve my real title, dates, and contribution level. If a metric has no source, remove it and ask a factual follow-up question outside the draft. Do not replace it with another estimate. Draft: [paste draft] Source notes: [paste verified facts] Use only facts I provide. Do not invent or estimate achievements, metrics, skills, credentials, dates, titles, personal motivations, or company facts. Preserve my actual contribution and responsibility. If information is missing, ask a question separately and leave the unsupported claim out of the draft.

Check the draft before you use it

Use “pass,” “revise,” or “unknown” for each check. These labels are an editing rubric, not an ATS score or a prediction of interview chances.

CheckPass conditionIf it fails
Factual supportEvery title, date, skill, number, and outcome traces to your notesRemove the claim or find reliable support
Individual contributionThe verbs reflect what you personally didReplace inflated ownership or leadership language
Job relevanceThe selected facts address a stated requirementReorder or clarify existing evidence; leave genuine gaps visible
SpecificityThe reader can identify the task, context, or outcomeAdd a detail you can support; a metric is optional
ReadabilityYou can explain the wording naturally and it is easy to scanShorten or use familiar language
Final-file checkThe exported resume reads correctly and application fields are accurateFix the document or fields before submitting

What this workflow cannot tell you

An AI tool cannot confirm your employment history from your draft alone. A keyword comparison also cannot reproduce an employer's entire screening process. Do not treat a generated “match percentage” as an employer score or a guarantee of being interviewed.

Plain text does not preserve the original document's layout. For example, Greenhouse documents parsing problems involving image-based resumes and some complex layouts. Follow the specific application's file instructions, inspect the exported document, and review populated fields where available.

Resume Bullet Point Prompts

Copy the prompt, replace [bracketed placeholders] with your content, and paste into your AI tool.

Core bullet rewrite

Rewrite my resume bullets for clarity and relevance to this job description. Start with an accurate action verb and aim for under 25 words per bullet without losing important context. Include numbers only when supported by my notes. Return each revised bullet alongside the facts it uses. Job description: [paste]. Current bullets: [paste]. Verified notes and contribution boundaries: [paste]. Use only facts I provide. Do not invent or estimate achievements, metrics, skills, credentials, dates, titles, personal motivations, or company facts. Preserve my actual contribution and responsibility. If information is missing, ask a question separately and leave the unsupported claim out of the draft.

Find evidence for stronger bullets

Review these bullets and suggest questions that could reveal useful evidence about scope, frequency, quality, or outcomes. For each question, suggest a record I could check, such as a project log or approved report. Do not supply a number. Then rewrite each bullet using only the facts already provided, even if no metric is available. Bullets: [paste]. Verified role context: [paste]. Use only facts I provide. Do not invent or estimate achievements, metrics, skills, credentials, dates, titles, personal motivations, or company facts. Preserve my actual contribution and responsibility. If information is missing, ask a question separately and leave the unsupported claim out of the draft.

Weak verb replacement

Review these bullets for vague verbs. Suggest more precise verbs only when my notes support the responsibility they imply. Do not turn “assisted” into “led” unless I actually led the work. Show the original, revised version, and reason for the change. Bullets: [paste]. My contribution: [paste]. Use only facts I provide. Do not invent or estimate achievements, metrics, skills, credentials, dates, titles, personal motivations, or company facts. Preserve my actual contribution and responsibility. If information is missing, ask a question separately and leave the unsupported claim out of the draft.

Entry-level / no experience bullets

Turn my coursework, projects, internships, or volunteer activities into resume bullets for [target role]. Identify each experience accurately as academic, personal, volunteer, or paid work. Describe my own contribution and any documented outcome. Draft up to three bullets per relevant item; do not force a result when none is supplied. Source material: [paste]. Use only facts I provide. Do not invent or estimate achievements, metrics, skills, credentials, dates, titles, personal motivations, or company facts. Preserve my actual contribution and responsibility. If information is missing, ask a question separately and leave the unsupported claim out of the draft.

Technical role bullets (engineering/data)

Rewrite these technical resume bullets for [target role]. Use the technologies, work scope, and outcomes explicitly in my notes. Distinguish what I built from what the wider team built. Do not infer user counts, performance improvements, or business impact. Return revised bullets and questions about missing evidence. Bullets: [paste]. Technical context and verified results: [paste]. Use only facts I provide. Do not invent or estimate achievements, metrics, skills, credentials, dates, titles, personal motivations, or company facts. Preserve my actual contribution and responsibility. If information is missing, ask a question separately and leave the unsupported claim out of the draft.

Professional Summary Prompts

Full tailoring analysis

Compare my resume with this job description. List the explicit requirements and label each “supported,” “unclear,” or “not evidenced in my notes.” Quote the resume evidence for supported items. Preserve my actual contribution and responsibility. If information is missing, ask a question separately and leave the unsupported claim out of the draft.

Keyword and Formatting Review Prompts

Copy the prompt, replace [bracketed placeholders] with your content, and paste into your AI tool.

ATS keyword check

Review my resume against this job description as an evidence and terminology check. List explicit requirements, quote the relevant evidence from my resume, and flag anything unclear. Suggest natural wording only for qualifications I actually have. Do not assign an ATS pass/fail result, percentage, or hiring prediction. Job description: [paste]. Resume and verified notes: [paste]. Use only facts I provide. Do not invent or estimate achievements, metrics, skills, credentials, dates, titles, personal motivations, or company facts. Preserve my actual contribution and responsibility. If information is missing, ask a question separately and leave the unsupported claim out of the draft.

ATS formatting audit

Review the resume content I provide for inconsistent dates, unclear section labels, repeated information, and reading-order problems visible in this input. Say which issues you can observe and which require inspection of the original document. If I provide only plain text, do not claim to see columns, text boxes, fonts, or page layout. Give me a checklist for the exported file and application fields. Resume: [paste text or describe supplied file]. Application file instructions: [paste]. Use only facts I provide. Do not invent or estimate achievements, metrics, skills, credentials, dates, titles, personal motivations, or company facts. Preserve my actual contribution and responsibility. If information is missing, ask a question separately and leave the unsupported claim out of the draft.

Skills section optimization

Rewrite my skills section to emphasize the skills relevant to this job description. Use only skills I explicitly confirm below. Group them where that makes the section easier to read. Use the employer's wording only when it accurately describes my skill; list unconfirmed requirements separately as questions. Job description: [paste]. Current skills: [paste]. Additional skills I confirm I have: [paste or none]. Use only facts I provide. Do not invent or estimate achievements, metrics, skills, credentials, dates, titles, personal motivations, or company facts. Preserve my actual contribution and responsibility. My reasons and priorities: [paste]. Use only facts I provide. Do not invent or estimate achievements, metrics, skills, credentials, dates, titles, personal motivations, or company facts. Preserve my actual contribution and responsibility. If information is missing, ask a question separately and leave the unsupported claim out of the draft.

Keep a reusable, verified resume workflow

Keep source facts separate from drafts

Maintain a private fact bank with your accurate titles, dates, projects, responsibilities, and outcomes. Save evidence you are allowed to retain. Treat AI-generated wording as a draft until you have checked it.

Edit one section when that makes review easier

Start with the section most relevant to your target role. A smaller edit is easier to compare with its source. Review the complete resume afterward for consistency and repetition.

Ask for a change log

Have the tool explain which facts it used and what it changed. A change log makes edits easier to inspect, but it is still AI-generated and needs checking against your notes.

Save the version you submit

Keep the job description, final resume, and application date together. Reuse verified source notes for the next application and check that older details still apply.
