01 · Customer support
Which AI tools help an Indian small business manage customer support?
There are two different jobs here and they need different tools. If you answer a handful of messages a day, you do not need a support product: use ChatGPT or Gemini to draft replies faster and send them yourself. The moment you are answering the same twenty questions every week across WhatsApp, Instagram and your website, that repetition is what a support tool removes.
The thing that separates a useful support bot from an embarrassing one is grounding. A bot answering from its own general knowledge will invent your delivery times, your return policy and your prices with total confidence. A bot trained on your actual documents answers from your real policies, and says it does not know when it does not. Insist on the second kind, and always leave a visible path to reach a human.
Start narrow. Load your ten most-asked questions, your delivery and returns policy, and your price list. Watch the real conversations for a fortnight and add whatever it got wrong. A bot handling your top ten questions well is worth far more than one attempting everything badly.
Train a support bot on your own business documents
Chatbase builds an AI support agent from your own data: your policies, price list, product pages and FAQs, then embeds it on your site. Because it answers from your documents rather than guesswork, it gives customers your real delivery times and prices instead of inventing them. There is a free tier to test the idea before you commit.

Be clear-eyed on cost before you commit: Chatbase publishes no rupee pricing, so it bills in dollars. Its free tier is limited to 50 message credits a month and one agent, and free agents are deleted after 14 days of inactivity, so it is for testing rather than running on. The entry paid plan is 40 dollars per month billed monthly. Note that Chatbase's pricing page opens on the annual toggle, so the first figure you see is the discounted annual rate rather than the monthly one.
02 · Social media
How can Indian small business owners automate their social media marketing?
Automate the production and the scheduling, never the judgment. The workflow that holds up is: decide the month's handful of themes yourself, use an AI assistant to turn each theme into a week of posts adapted per platform, then schedule them in one sitting through a scheduler. The bottleneck for most small businesses is not ideas, it is the daily context-switch of remembering to post.
One idea should become several formats rather than several separate ideas. A single customer question can become an Instagram caption, a short video script, a WhatsApp status and a longer post. That is where AI genuinely compresses the work, and it is far better than asking it to invent thirty unrelated posts, which is how accounts end up sounding hollow.
Feed it your real voice before you generate anything. Paste two or three of your own best-performing posts and tell it to match that register. Default AI social copy is recognisable, and in a market where customers buy from people they trust, sounding automated is an actual cost rather than a stylistic quibble.
Schedule a month of posts in one sitting
Postiz schedules across Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn and more from a single calendar, so a batch of AI-drafted posts goes out on a plan instead of whenever you remember. It is open source under the AGPL, and the self-hosted version is not feature-limited, so a tight budget has a genuine free route.

The honest cost picture: Postiz has no free tier on the hosted version, only a 7-day trial, and the entry plan is 29 dollars per month for 5 channels with no team members. There is no rupee pricing. The genuinely free option is self-hosting, and Postiz states there is currently no difference between the hosted and self-hosted versions. The catch is not the software, it is that you must get your own approvals from each social platform, and Postiz warns that Facebook, Instagram, Threads and YouTube approvals can take over a month.
03 · Real cost in rupees
The most affordable AI tools for a tight budget in India
Two things are worth knowing before you spend anything. First, the free tiers are genuinely capable and cover most of what a small business needs in its first months. Second, the two cheapest paid plans cost exactly the same, which makes the choice about fit rather than price.
| Tool | Price in India | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Free | ₹0per month | Enough to test whether AI helps your business at all |
| Google Gemini Free | ₹0per month | Includes image editing, Deep Research and Gems |
| ChatGPT Go | ₹399per month | The budget paid tier. UPI accepted |
| Google AI Plus | ₹399per month | Same price as ChatGPT Go, deeper Google Workspace integration |
| Google AI Pro | ₹1,950per month | Higher limits, 1M token context |
| ChatGPT Plus | ₹1,999per month | The mainstream paid tier. UPI accepted |
| Claude | USD onlyno INR price published | Anthropic publishes no rupee price; billed in dollars |
Every rupee figure above was read from the vendor's own India pricing page in July 2026, not converted from dollars. Prices change, and tax may be added at checkout, so confirm on the vendor's page before subscribing.
The UPI detail most articles miss
OpenAI's billing documentation lists UPI as an accepted payment method in India for ChatGPT Go and Plus, and explicitly not for Pro or Business plans. If card payments have been the thing stopping you, that removes the barrier on exactly the two plans a small business is most likely to want. Google bills its AI plans in rupees. Anthropic publishes no rupee price for Claude at all, so that one means dollar billing and the card and foreign exchange friction that comes with it.
One caveat that matters on a tight budget: the general assistants have rupee pricing, but the specialist tools mostly do not. Support and scheduling products, including the two recommended on this page, bill in dollars with no India-specific rate, which adds card and foreign exchange friction on top of a price that was never set with Indian purchasing power in mind. That is a genuine argument for starting with a ₹399 assistant and only adding a specialist tool once a specific bottleneck is costing you more than the subscription would.
04 · Sales and retention
How AI helps a retail or service business improve sales and retention
Retention is where AI pays for itself fastest in a small business, because the work is repetitive and it is the work that quietly does not get done. Following up with a customer three weeks after purchase, remembering who bought what, sending a genuinely relevant offer rather than a blast: these are all tasks that fail through lack of time, not lack of intent.
Where it works
- Drafting personalised follow-ups at volume, from your own customer notes
- Turning a messy sales register into a view of who buys what and when
- Writing product descriptions and listings far faster than by hand
- Translating your marketing across the languages your customers actually use
- Answering routine pre-sale questions instantly, at any hour
Where it does not
- Negotiating price, which customers expect to do with a person
- Handling a complaint, where automation reads as dismissal
- Knowing your regulars, which is your actual competitive advantage
- Deciding what to stock, which needs judgment about your market
- Replacing the relationship that makes someone come back
The pattern that works: let AI handle the volume and the remembering, and keep yourself in the conversations that decide whether someone returns. Translation deserves a specific mention, because reaching customers in the language they prefer is one of the clearest and cheapest wins available to an Indian small business, and it is a task current models handle well.
05 · Risks
The real risks, and how to manage them
Every article recommending AI tools should also say where they hurt. These are the five that actually cost small businesses money, and each has a specific and cheap mitigation.
Wrong information stated confidently
AI can invent prices, policies, delivery times and product details that sound entirely plausible. Never let it answer a customer question about your business from its own knowledge. Ground it in your real documents, and check any number, date or commitment before it reaches a customer.
Customer data going somewhere you did not intend
Do not paste customer names, phone numbers, addresses or payment details into a general AI chat. If you need AI on customer data, use a tool built for it with a clear data policy, and check whether that vendor trains on your inputs. India's data protection rules apply to you regardless of which tool you used.
Sounding like everyone else
Default AI output reads the same across every business using it, which quietly erodes the thing a small business competes on. Feed it your actual voice: past posts, real customer messages, your own words. Then edit. If a customer could not tell your message from a competitor's, the tool has cost you something.
Paying in dollars for tools you barely use
Subscriptions accumulate quietly. Several major tools bill in USD with no rupee price, which adds card and foreign exchange friction on top. Audit monthly, cancel anything you have not opened in four weeks, and prefer the free tiers until a tool has clearly earned its cost.
Automating the relationship, not just the admin
Automate the repetitive parts, the FAQ replies, the scheduling, the first draft. Keep a human on complaints, refunds, negotiations and anything emotional. Indian small businesses run heavily on personal trust and repeat custom, and a bot handling a genuinely upset customer costs more than it saves.
06 · Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest AI tool for a small business in India?
The free tiers, and they are more capable than most people assume. ChatGPT and Google Gemini both have a genuinely free plan at ₹0, and Gemini's free tier includes image generation and editing, Deep Research and custom Gems. Start there. When you outgrow free, the two cheapest paid tiers are ChatGPT Go and Google AI Plus, both at ₹399 per month.
How much does ChatGPT cost in India?
OpenAI publishes rupee pricing for India: ChatGPT Go is ₹399 per month and ChatGPT Plus is ₹1,999 per month, with a free tier at ₹0 and Pro starting from ₹10,699 per month. UPI is accepted for the Go and Plus plans, which removes the card friction that puts a lot of Indian users off. UPI is not offered for Pro or Business plans.
Is Gemini or ChatGPT better value for an Indian small business?
At the entry paid tier they cost the same: ChatGPT Go and Google AI Plus are both ₹399 per month. The deciding factor is where your work already happens. If your business runs on Gmail, Google Docs and Sheets, Gemini removes copy-paste friction because it sits inside those tools. If you want the stronger standalone assistant and a bigger ecosystem of custom GPTs, ChatGPT is the pick.
Can I pay for AI tools using UPI in India?
For OpenAI, yes on some plans. OpenAI's own billing documentation lists UPI as available for ChatGPT Go and Plus in India, but explicitly not for Pro or Business plans. Google bills Google AI plans in rupees. Anthropic publishes no rupee price for Claude, so that one is billed in dollars.
Which AI tool is best for customer support in a small Indian business?
For anything beyond answering a few messages a day, a purpose-built support tool beats a general chatbot, because it can be trained on your own documents and embedded on your site. A general assistant like ChatGPT or Gemini is better for drafting replies you send yourself. The important rule either way is grounding: the bot must answer from your real policies and prices, never from its own guesswork.
Do I need to pay for AI tools to see a benefit?
No, and you should not start by paying. The free tiers of ChatGPT and Gemini cover drafting, summarising, translation, planning and basic analysis, which is where most small businesses find their first real time savings. Pay only when a specific limit is blocking work you are already doing, not because a paid plan looks more serious.
