Does ChatGPT use my conversations to train its models?
Quick answer
By default, consumer chats may be used to improve models, but you can turn this off in settings. Business, Enterprise, and API data are not used for training by default. Never paste secrets or regulated data regardless.
For consumer ChatGPT (Free, Go, Plus, Pro), conversations may be used to help improve OpenAI's models by default, but you are given control: you can disable model training for your account in the data controls settings, which stops your future chats from being used that way (and typically limits history in exchange).
The business and developer tiers are treated differently. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, and the API, do not use your data to train models by default, which is a deliberate difference aimed at companies handling sensitive information. If data governance matters, those tiers, not the consumer plans, are the right home.
Regardless of plan or settings, the safe practice is the same: do not paste passwords, API keys, customer personal data, or regulated information into any AI chat. Turning off training reduces one risk, but the simplest protection is not putting truly sensitive material into a third-party tool in the first place.
For most everyday personal use, the default settings are fine, and flipping the training toggle off is a reasonable extra step if you prefer. For work with confidential data, use a business tier and follow your organization's policy.
