Why pictures of yourself need a different prompt
A prompt for an invented person only has to produce someone plausible. A prompt for a picture of you has a harder job: everything can change except the one thing people will check, which is whether it still looks like you. Image models tend to drift toward a smoother, younger, more symmetrical average, and words like perfect or flawless push them further that way.
That is why every prompt on this page carries the same likeness lock. It names the features that must stay fixed in plain, visible terms, and it explicitly forbids the common drifts: slimming, smoothing, lightening skin, and changing age. Keep the lock word for word. When you edit it each time, you lose the ability to tell whether a bad result came from the lock or the new request.
This page is about photos of one person: you. For two people in one frame, use ChatGPT prompts for couple photos. For a strictly professional headshot, use LinkedIn headshots with AI. For general image ideas, start at the AI photo prompts hub.
The likeness lock
Paste this at the top of each prompt. Add or remove features to match you, then keep it identical for the whole chat.
Use the uploaded photo as the only reference for my face. Keep my facial structure, eye shape, nose, lips, skin tone, skin texture, freckles or marks, hairline, and apparent age unchanged. Do not slim, smooth, whiten, or reshape me. Keep my glasses and any visible religious or cultural items exactly as they are.
Which prompt to run
| You want | Upload | Keep the edit to |
|---|---|---|
| A profile picture people will match to you | Front-facing photo, daylight | Background, light, crop |
| A fun scene or travel image | Photo with the angle you want in the scene | Scene plus matching light; label it AI |
| An art version or avatar | Clear face, simple background | Style only; keep tone and features |
| An outfit or hair preview | Full or half-body photo | Clothes or hair; never the body or face |
| A real photo, just better | The original file, not a screenshot | Colour, exposure, distractions |
How to run one session
Open a new chat and upload the photo. Run the first setup prompt so ChatGPT tells you what it can see and whether the photo is usable. Then make the small background test. If your face survives a plain background swap, it has a good chance of surviving a bigger scene. If it does not, change the input photo before you try anything else.
Build the image in layers. Background first, then light, then clothing, then style. Each layer is its own turn with the likeness lock pasted on top. When a result is good, say so and continue from it. When it drifts, ask ChatGPT to go back to the original upload and apply only the latest change, rather than fixing the drift on top of a drifted image.
OpenAI documents both ways to edit: describe the change in chat, or select an area and describe the change for that area. Its help article also warns that selections are not always precise and can spread past the area you chose, so check the edges of every selected edit. Plans differ in which image features they include, so check yours rather than assuming.
28 copy-paste ChatGPT prompts
Replace every [bracket]. Upload your photo before the first prompt. Keep the likeness lock in each turn.
Set up the photo before any style
These prompts check the input and fix the likeness rules. Run one of them first in a new chat.
I am going to upload a photo of myself for image edits. Before editing, describe what you can see: lighting, angle, how much of my body is visible, glasses, hair, and anything that could make my face hard to preserve. Say whether this photo is good enough for a portrait edit, and what kind of photo would be better. Do not generate an image yet.
Repeat these rules back to me as a short checklist. I will paste this checklist at the top of every edit in this chat. Do not generate an image yet.
Make one small test edit: change only the background to a plain light grey wall. Keep everything else, including clothing, pose, crop, and light direction. I will compare it with the original before asking for anything bigger.
Compare this edited image with my original photo. List every visible difference in my face, hair, skin, body shape, and age. Be specific and do not reassure me. If anything changed that was not requested, say which instruction I should add to stop it.
Profile pictures and everyday portraits
Small, believable changes work best for photos people will compare with the real you.

Do not slim, smooth, whiten, or reshape me. Keep my glasses and any visible religious or cultural items exactly as they are. Turn this into a clean profile picture. Give me three crops of this portrait for different places: a 1:1 avatar, a 4:5 social post, and a 16:9 banner with empty space on the right for text. Same image treatment in all three.
Places you have not been (labelled as AI)
Fun scenes are fine. Present them as AI images, not as travel proof.

Add a small "AI image" note in the bottom corner.
Styled shoots and art versions

Review, compare and recover
These prompts stop a good chat from drifting into a stranger's face.
Look at the last three images in this chat and rank them by how closely the face matches my original upload. Explain the difference you see in each, using concrete features like jaw, eyes, nose, skin tone, and age. Recommend which one to continue from.
The last result no longer looks like me. Go back to my original photo, not the last image. Apply only this change: [the one change I want]. Use the uploaded photo as the only reference for my face. Keep my facial structure, eye shape, nose, lips, skin tone, skin texture, freckles or marks, hairline, and apparent age unchanged. Do not slim, smooth, whiten, or reshape me. Write me a reusable prompt template for future pictures of myself. Include the likeness lock, a slot for the scene, a slot for the outfit, a slot for the light, and a slot for the crop. Keep it under 120 words.
Before I post this image, list what a careful viewer could notice is AI-made (hands, text, earrings, background patterns, reflections). Tell me which issues I should fix, and suggest a short honest caption that says the image is AI-edited.
Common mistakes and the fix
| What happened | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Looks like a sibling, not you | Too many changes in one turn | Restart from the original; one change per turn |
| Skin smoothed or lightened | Words like flawless, glowing, perfect | Remove them; ask for real tone and texture |
| Face lit differently from the scene | Light direction not stated | Say where the light comes from, matching your photo |
| Body reshaped in an outfit edit | Only the face was locked | Add the body and proportions line |
| Garbled text on a sign or postcard | Long or unspecified wording | Give the exact short text in quotes and check spelling |
Tips that keep the picture yours
- Upload the best photo you have. Most face drift starts with a dark, angled, or filtered input.
- Paste the likeness lock at the top of every prompt, not only the first one.
- Change one thing per turn: background, then light, then outfit, then style.
- Drop flattering adjectives. Ask for natural skin, real tone, and your actual age.
- When the face drifts, restart from the original upload instead of patching the last image.
- Compare at full size before you share. Eyes, teeth, ears, and jewellery give it away first.
- Label scene swaps and art versions as AI images. Do not present them as real events.
- Only use photos of other people with their permission.
Privacy and honesty
A photo of your face is personal data. Crop out other people, screens, documents, and anything that shows where you live before you upload. Check the data controls in your ChatGPT settings, and delete the conversation when you no longer need it.
A picture of you in a place you have never visited is a creative image, not a memory. Say it is AI-made when you share it, especially on dating, professional, or verification profiles, where people rely on the photo being real. OpenAI's usage policies also prohibit using another person's photorealistic likeness without consent in ways that could confuse authenticity, so these prompts are for your own photos or photos of people who agreed.

Pictures of yourself FAQ
What is the best ChatGPT prompt for a picture of yourself?
Upload one clear, well-lit photo of yourself, then write the prompt in three parts: a likeness lock that says what must not change (face shape, skin tone, texture, hairline, age), the change you want (scene, outfit, light, crop), and the use (profile picture, poster, gift). Ask for one change at a time. A prompt that only says make me look better invites a different face.
How do I keep my face the same in ChatGPT images?
Start from a sharp, front-facing photo with even light and no heavy filter. Put the likeness lock at the top of every prompt, change one thing per turn, and compare each result with the original at full size. If the face drifts, go back to the last good version instead of asking ChatGPT to fix the drift on top of it. No prompt guarantees an exact likeness, so treat close as the goal and reject results that are not you.
Can I upload my own photo to ChatGPT and edit it?
Yes. OpenAI's help article on images in ChatGPT says you can upload an existing image and describe the change, or select part of an image and describe an edit to that area. It also notes that selections are not always precise and edits can spread past the area you chose. Availability of features such as images with thinking depends on your plan, so check the account you use.
Can I use these prompts on a photo of someone else?
Only with that person's permission, and never to make an image that could be mistaken for a real photo of something that did not happen. OpenAI's usage policies prohibit using someone's likeness, including a photorealistic image, without consent in ways that could confuse authenticity. For photos of two people, use the couple photo prompts and get both people's agreement first.
Why does ChatGPT change my skin tone or make me look younger?
Image models drift toward a polished average when the prompt asks for words like flawless, perfect, or beautiful. Remove those words and state the opposite: keep natural skin texture, keep my real skin tone, keep my apparent age. Ask for realistic light rather than retouching. If a result still lightens or smooths you, discard it and restart from the original photo.
Can I use an AI picture of myself as a LinkedIn or job photo?
You can, but a professional photo should look like you on a video call. Keep the edit conservative: background, light, crop, and clothing tidy-up. Do not change your face, age, or body. Some employers and platforms have their own rules on AI images, so check them. For a headshot-specific workflow, use the LinkedIn headshot guide linked on this page.
Is it safe to upload selfies to ChatGPT?
Treat it like any cloud service. Use a photo you would be comfortable storing online, crop out other people, house numbers, documents, and screens, and check your data controls in ChatGPT settings. Avoid uploading images of children unless you are their parent or guardian and comfortable with the service's terms. Delete the conversation when you no longer need it.
What photo should I upload for the best result?
One person, face clearly visible, eyes open, even daylight or soft indoor light, no sunglasses, and the face filling a reasonable part of the frame. Avoid beauty filters, strong shadows, and group shots. If you want a full-body result, upload a full-body photo; ChatGPT has to guess anything the photo does not show.
