Claude Free: what you actually get

The Free tier in 2026 gives you Claude Sonnet 4.6 with daily message caps, limited Opus 4.6 access during off-peak hours, web search, file upload, and Artifacts. Caps tighten during peak times and reset on a rolling window. For light users who ask Claude a handful of questions a day, Free is genuinely usable. The breaking point is hitting a cap and waiting for it to refill while you are mid-task. That is when Pro pays for itself.

Claude Pro at 20 dollars per month: the default upgrade

Pro is the version most paid Claude users land on. Twenty dollars per month gets you about five times the Free usage, priority Opus 4.6 access, full Projects (Claude's answer to ChatGPT's custom GPTs), Artifacts for live code and document previews, and early access to new features. Pro is the right tier for daily writers, developers, researchers, and analysts. The single biggest reason to upgrade from Free is removing the friction of cap pauses during work sessions.

Claude Max at 100 dollars and 200 dollars: when you need it

Max sits above Pro and comes in two bands. The 100 dollars per month tier gives you 5x more usage than Pro, which is enough headroom for heavy researchers and writers. The 200 dollars per month tier gives you 20x more usage than Pro, and is the recommended tier for sustained Claude Code sessions. If you are coding with Claude for hours per day, the 200 dollar tier keeps you from hitting caps mid-task. Max does not unlock different models, only more of them.

Claude Team at 30 dollars per user per month: small-team workspace

Team is 30 dollars per user per month, or 25 dollars per user per month billed annually, with a 5-seat minimum. You get a shared workspace, admin console, shared Projects (so prompt libraries are reusable across the team), default training opt-out, and consolidated billing. For any team of 5 or more where everyone would otherwise pay for Pro, Team is the cleaner option because of shared Projects and a single bill.

Claude Enterprise: custom, with SSO and compliance

Enterprise is custom-priced and built for larger organizations that need SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, audit logs, expanded context windows, data residency options, and a dedicated support relationship. Public estimates put per- user pricing in the 60 to 90 dollar range at common commit sizes, though actual pricing scales with seat count and token volume. Contact Anthropic sales for a quote.

Claude API: separate billing, separate pricing

The Anthropic API is billed separately from any consumer subscription. You pay per million tokens by model: Opus 4.6 is the most capable and most expensive, Sonnet 4.6 is the balanced workhorse, and Haiku 4.5 is the fast and cheap option. What we actually pay for

Inside our editorial and engineering teams, the split is roughly 60 percent on Pro, 25 percent on the Max 200 dollar tier for Claude Code users, and 15 percent on Team for the shared Projects workspace. We have not put any light users on Max. For most non-developer roles, Pro at 20 dollars is the right answer. Max only pays off when you are running Claude Code sessions or analyzing very long documents multiple times per day.

The verdict: which Claude tier should you pick

Free is the right answer for a handful of questions a day. Pro at 20 dollars per month is the right answer for daily users and is the tier we recommend by default. Max at 100 dollars is the right answer when you regularly hit Pro caps but are not a Claude Code power user. Max at 200 dollars is the right answer for sustained Claude Code or long-document work. Team is the right answer when 5 or more people would otherwise pay for Pro separately. Enterprise is the right answer at larger scale or when SSO and compliance are required.
