01 · Reality check
What ChatGPT actually does well here
Good at
- Exploring many visual directions quickly and cheaply
- Rendering readable text inside a mark, which older tools struggled with
- Producing concepts to react to when you cannot articulate what you want
- Generating a brief you can hand to a real designer
- Suggesting colour and type directions with reasoning
Not the right tool for
- Producing scalable vector files, which is what a logo actually needs
- Guaranteeing originality, so trademark risk is real and unassessed
- Consistency: regenerating gives you a different mark, not the same one refined
- Fine typographic control, kerning and precise geometry
- Understanding your market and competitors unless you tell it
02 · The method
Step by step
- 1
Write the brief before generating
What the business does, who it serves, the feeling it should convey, and three brands whose look you admire. Generating without a brief produces generic marks.
- 2
Ask for directions in words first
Have it propose several distinct concepts described in words, with the reasoning. Choosing a direction is cheaper in text than in images.
- 3
Generate concepts for the strongest direction
Ask for the mark on a plain background, simple enough to work small, and state the exact text if the logo includes a name.
- 4
Test it small and in one colour
Ask for it at small size and in pure black. A logo that only works large and in full colour is not a working logo.
- 5
Have it redrawn as a vector
Take your chosen concept to a designer, or recreate it yourself in vector software. This is the step that turns a picture into a usable brand asset.
- 6
Run a trademark check before you commit
Search the relevant trademark register and the web for similar marks in your industry. Generated logos carry real risk of resembling existing ones.
03 · Use this now
Copy-paste prompt for logo concepts
Act as a brand designer. Business: [what it does]. Audience: [who]. The feeling the logo should convey: [three adjectives]. Brands whose visual style I admire: [list]. Competitors to look different from: [list]. Do not generate an image yet. First propose four distinct logo directions in words, each with the concept, why it fits, and how it would work at small size. After I choose one, generate it on a plain white background, simple enough to remain legible at 32 pixels, with the exact text "[your business name]" if the mark includes the name. Then show the same mark in pure black only.
04 · Avoid these
Common mistakes
- Using a generated PNG as your actual logo. You need a vector file for print, signage and scaling.
- Skipping a trademark check, which is the risk nobody thinks about until it is expensive.
- Judging a logo only at large size in full colour, where almost anything looks fine.
- Regenerating instead of refining, which gives you a different mark each time rather than an improved one.
- Assuming the output is original. It may closely resemble marks it learned from.
05 · Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT make a logo?
It can generate logo concepts, and it renders text inside images notably better than older tools. What it produces is a raster image rather than the scalable vector file a real logo requires, and it cannot tell you whether the mark resembles an existing trademark. It is an excellent concept tool and a poor final-asset tool.
Can I use a ChatGPT logo for my business?
Technically OpenAI's terms permit commercial use of output, but two practical problems remain. You need a vector version for print, signage and scaling, and you should run a trademark search first, because a generated mark may resemble something already registered in your industry. Treat the output as a concept to develop, not a finished asset.
Can ChatGPT give me an SVG or vector file?
It generates raster images, not true vector artwork. It can write SVG code, but the result is generally not equivalent to a properly drawn logo and tends to be crude for anything complex. The reliable route is taking your chosen concept and having it redrawn in vector software.
How do I get consistent variations of the same logo?
This is a genuine weakness. Regenerating usually produces a different mark rather than a refined version of the same one. Once you have a concept you like, consistency comes from recreating it as a vector, where you can then produce variations deliberately.
