The simplest path needs no tools at all: attach the image and describe the edit in a normal message, for example 'remove the car in the background'.

In the editor, use the selection tool to highlight the region you want changed, then describe the change. On mobile there is a brush-size slider for finer highlighting.

OpenAI's own documentation warns that highlights are not always precise and edits may extend beyond the selected area. Compare the result against the original before accepting it.

The editor has undo, redo and save. Work in small steps so you can step back one change at a time rather than losing a good version.

Why did ChatGPT change parts of the photo I did not select?

ChatGPT regenerates the image rather than applying a bounded edit to specific pixels. If you need untouched areas to stay byte-identical, use a dedicated photo editor instead.
Can ChatGPT restore old or damaged photos?
