Legal work and research

How to Use Claude for Lawyers

Claude can reduce the mechanical work around a matter, but it does not become a lawyer because it produces polished prose. Anthropic's Projects feature can keep approved matter material together, yet the result is still a draft that requires professional review. This guide gives lawyers a source-first workflow for using Claude without outsourcing confidentiality, legal judgment or accountability.

What Claude actually does well here

Good at

  • Building document inventories and chronologies
  • Comparing supplied clauses and extracting issues
  • Preparing research questions and proposition maps
  • Drafting internal work product from approved facts
  • Turning review corrections into a repeatable checklist

Not the right tool for

  • Providing legal advice without professional review
  • Guaranteeing that a citation or quotation is real and current
  • Deciding privilege, strategy, settlement or filing choices
  • Protecting client data when the workspace is not approved
  • Replacing the responsible lawyer's accountability

02A · Working notes

Define the matter and work product

Name the jurisdiction, procedural stage, issue, audience, date boundary and exact deliverable before opening Claude. Ask for a chronology, clause matrix, research ledger, internal outline or questions for a client call—not a free-form answer to 'what should we do?' State what is outside scope: no legal conclusion beyond the supplied authorities, no filing-ready language, no client communication and no invented citations. Require a source inventory and a list of gaps before prose. A bounded task is easier to supervise, easier to bill and easier to correct when the record is incomplete.

Use an approved workspace and least privilege

Use the firm's approved Claude account, tenant and matter workspace, and follow the firm's policy for client information, retention, access and vendor review. Anthropic describes Projects as self-contained workspaces with their own knowledge bases; that convenience does not make a project a matter-management system or expand a user's authority to share documents. Upload the minimum necessary material, remove credentials and irrelevant personal information, and preserve the original files in the controlled repository. Record what was provided, who approved the workflow and who can access the resulting chat or artifact.

Build a source ledger before analysis

Give each document a short identifier, title, date, jurisdiction, version and page or paragraph range. Ask Claude to return a ledger with proposition, source, location, quoted text where needed, confidence and unresolved conflict. Tell it to write NOT FOUND when a proposition is absent. A generated citation is only a search lead until you open the authority. This is especially important for case names, quotations, procedural history, statutory wording and deadlines. If two documents conflict, preserve both and send the conflict to the responsible lawyer rather than asking the model to select the more persuasive wording.

Extract facts without converting allegations into facts

For pleadings, witness material, correspondence or investigation notes, ask for separate tables: confirmed record facts, each party's allegation, disputed evidence, inference and missing material. Keep speaker or document attribution beside every row. Require dates, actors, conditions and source locations. Do not let a summary erase qualifiers such as 'alleged', 'subject to', 'on information and belief' or 'without admission'. A chronology should show uncertainty explicitly. The lawyer decides which facts are accepted, relevant or admissible; Claude can make the candidate record easier to inspect.

Compare clauses with a controlled matrix

Paste or upload the authorised versions and define the comparison question: termination, liability, data use, notice, governing law, renewal or another issue. Ask for a row per clause with exact text, location, difference, practical effect, ambiguity, risk question and suggested follow-up. Prohibit a conclusion that depends on law not supplied. Then compare the output against the documents and test whether numbering, defined terms, exceptions and schedules were preserved. A clause summary is not a legal opinion. Keep the matrix linked to the versioned documents so a later reviewer can reproduce it.

Use Claude for research planning, not authority by memory

Start with the precise legal question and jurisdiction. Ask Claude to propose search terms, issue trees, counterarguments and a source checklist, then conduct the research in the approved legal databases or official sources. When you supply authorities, ask for a proposition map tied to page or paragraph locations. Verify that a case is current, on point and accurately characterised. Do not ask it to invent a citation or rely on a remembered quotation. The responsible lawyer decides the research method and checks citator, amendment, procedural and jurisdictional status.

Draft from approved facts and show changes

Give Claude the audience, purpose, approved facts, authorities, tone, length and prohibited additions. Ask for a draft plus a claim ledger and a list of every sentence that needs human confirmation. Use placeholders for missing names, dates, amounts and approvals. For a client letter or court document, work in a versioned copy and compare the result with the approved template. Never let a polished draft silently change a concession, deadline, legal position or commitment. A lawyer reviews substance, citations, privilege, tone, local requirements and the final formatting before anything leaves the firm.

Protect privilege, confidentiality and client trust

Do not assume that a general AI chat is suitable for privileged or confidential material. Check the approved tool, terms, security controls, data residency, retention and client instructions. Minimise names, account numbers, health details and unrelated matter content. Do not combine matters in one project or paste secrets into a prompt. Consider whether client communication or informed consent is required under the applicable rules. ABA Formal Opinion 512 emphasises competence, confidentiality, communication, supervision, candour and reasonable fees; local rules and firm policy may be stricter. Escalate uncertainty to the supervising lawyer or privacy lead.

Run a final legal review gate

Before relying on output, verify every material fact, authority, quotation, calculation, defined term, date, deadline, citation, privilege label and requested remedy against the original. Ask Claude for an adversarial list of unsupported claims, then do the review yourself. Record the reviewer, source version, prompt purpose, material corrections and approval. Do not bill invented time or imply that AI work removed professional responsibility. The final work product belongs to the responsible lawyer, and the model's confidence is not a substitute for legal judgment.

A repeatable matter workflow

For a contract review, begin with a redacted brief and a version manifest. Ask Claude to inventory the documents, extract defined terms and build a clause matrix. Next request issue-specific questions, not a final risk score. Verify each row against the contract, check the governing law and ask the lawyer to decide what matters commercially. Then draft an internal summary with source links, open questions and recommended human owners. Only after approval should a separate draft be prepared for a client or counterparty. Preserve the reviewed matrix and the source version together. This sequence makes the AI contribution visible without making it authoritative.

Keep limitations beside the output

State whether the material is complete, whether the law was independently researched, which jurisdiction and date apply, and which points remain unresolved. If Claude could not read a scan, attachment or footnote, say so. If the result is a working note, label it DRAFT and restrict distribution. The safest legal answer may be a list of documents to obtain or questions for counsel. A narrow, traceable output is more useful than a confident paragraph that hides uncertainty.

Prepare a deposition or interview plan

Claude can help organise an interview plan when you provide the authorised factual record and define the purpose. Ask for a chronology, topic map, known contradiction, document to show, question objective and follow-up—not a prediction of how a witness will answer. Keep fact, allegation and inference in separate columns. Require the model to cite the record for each proposed question and to mark assumptions. A lawyer should decide strategy, privilege, sequencing and whether a question is appropriate. Do not upload a witness's personal information to an unapproved workspace, and do not treat a generated question as a substitute for reviewing the file. After the interview, use the approved notes to update the chronology and flag conflicts for human resolution.

Build a litigation or transaction issue list

Start with the decision the team needs to make and the date it must be ready. Give Claude the matter index, pleadings or transaction documents, instructions and known constraints. Ask for an issue table with question, source, owner, deadline, dependency, current answer, confidence and next evidence. Request a separate list of missing documents and contradictions. Do not ask for a single risk score that hides why an issue matters. Use the table in the firm's existing matter system and link back to the source. The responsible lawyer sets priority and decides what is material. Ask Claude to produce a handoff for a colleague who has not seen the chat, but keep the underlying record and approval state visible.

Make billing and client communication accurate

AI can help turn approved time notes or matter updates into a clearer internal summary, but it should not invent work, inflate time or imply that a client received a service that was not performed. Review the applicable fee agreement, firm policy and professional rules. If AI reduces the time needed for a task, record the actual prompting, checking, revising and legal judgment time rather than fictional hours. For a client update, provide only approved facts, the current status, next decision and authorised tone. Ask for a draft plus a claim ledger and unresolved questions. A lawyer checks every commitment, deadline, cost statement and legal characterisation before sending.

Handle scans, tables and long files defensibly

When a matter includes scans, tables, exhibits or long bundles, begin with a file manifest and a readability check. Ask Claude to identify unreadable pages, missing attachments, duplicate versions and sections it did not use. Work in labelled batches and preserve the batch boundary in every output. For a table, confirm that columns, units, footnotes and totals survived extraction. For a scan, compare key text with the image rather than trusting OCR silently. At the end, ask for coverage: files received, files read, pages skipped, claims supported and questions remaining. The lawyer decides whether the coverage is sufficient for the purpose and whether another tool or manual review is required.

Create a firm playbook with approval states

A reusable legal AI playbook should state the approved tool, matter types, data classes, source requirements, prohibited actions, reviewer role, retention rule and escalation route. Add prompt templates for a chronology, clause matrix, research ledger and internal draft, each with a source boundary and required output schema. Use statuses such as DRAFT, NEEDS SOURCE, NEEDS LAWYER REVIEW, APPROVED and SUPERSEDED. Test the playbook on low-risk synthetic material before using it on a live matter. Keep a correction log for invented citations, lost qualifiers, wrong attribution, missed documents and accidental disclosure. A playbook should make responsibility more visible, not turn a repeatable prompt into unattended legal work.

Ask for an adversarial review before approval

The last Claude pass should try to break the draft rather than make it sound more certain. Ask it to list every unsupported proposition, missing exception, ambiguous defined term, inconsistent date, unverified authority, confidentiality concern and sentence that could be read as advice or a commitment. Require the source location or write NOT FOUND. Then review the list against the actual matter record and add the lawyer's decision beside each item. Do not ask the model to certify that the document is safe. A useful adversarial pass exposes where human attention is required; the responsible lawyer decides whether the work is complete, fit for purpose and authorised to leave the workspace.

Keep the handoff reviewable

A colleague should be able to understand the task without opening the original chat. Preserve the approved brief, source manifest, prompt purpose, output, corrections, unresolved questions, reviewer and date. Link to the controlled documents rather than copying a sensitive bundle into a new conversation. If the matter changes, mark the old output superseded and start from the current source version. This makes Claude's contribution inspectable and prevents a stale draft from quietly re-entering the file.

Act as a legal-work drafting assistant, not a lawyer. Matter and jurisdiction: [details]. Work product: [chronology / clause matrix / research ledger / internal outline]. Approved sources: [list files and authorities]. Date boundary: [date]. Audience: [internal audience]. Use only the supplied sources. Do not invent facts, citations, quotations, owners, dates, legal conclusions or commitments. Separate (1) source-backed facts with document and page/paragraph location, (2) allegations or disputed points, (3) calculations, (4) inference, (5) missing evidence and (6) questions for the responsible lawyer. Write NOT FOUND when the source does not support a claim. Return a draft only after the source ledger, gaps and verification checklist. Do not send, file, advise, contact a client or change a record.

04 · Avoid these

Common mistakes

  • Uploading client material to an unapproved workspace
  • Treating a fluent answer as verified legal research
  • Allowing allegations or inferences to become facts
  • Failing to open every cited authority and quotation
  • Letting AI choose privilege, strategy, settlement or filing decisions
  • Sharing a draft without an owner, version or approval state

05 · Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can lawyers use Claude for legal work?

They can use it for bounded support such as organisation, drafting and comparison when the workspace, client duties, professional rules and firm policy permit it. A responsible lawyer must verify the output and remain accountable.

Can Claude do legal research?

It can help define a research question, organise supplied authorities and prepare search terms. Do not rely on remembered citations. Search approved databases or official sources and independently verify currency, jurisdiction and quotations.

Can I upload a client contract to Claude?

Only through an approved workflow after checking confidentiality, security, retention, client instructions and firm policy. Minimise the material and preserve the source version. A personal or unapproved chat is not automatically suitable.

Can Claude draft a court filing or client advice?

It can prepare a draft from approved material, but a lawyer must check the law, facts, procedure, privilege, tone and local requirements before reliance or delivery. Never let the draft bypass professional review.

How do I reduce hallucinated case citations?

Supply the authorities, require a source ledger and NOT FOUND markers, ask for page locations, and open every authority yourself. Do not ask Claude to fill a missing citation from memory.
