Set Gemini as your default assistant
This is the prerequisite for toggling system settings. Without it you can still chat, but the device-control features will not work.

Grant notification access for messages
Reading and replying to messages works through notifications, so the permission is required. Note it does not handle image, voice or video messages.

Try the Utilities commands
Ask it to set a timer, turn on the torch, open an app or enable Do Not Disturb. These are Android-only and are the most reliably useful everyday features.

Use Gemini Live for hands-free and camera
Gemini Live is free from 13 and up on the mobile app, and supports both camera input and screen sharing. This is the feature most people underuse.

Decide on lock-screen access deliberately
You can enable Gemini without unlocking, and making calls and sending messages without unlocking is a separate opt-in. Consider that second one carefully.

It cannot answer incoming calls. If you wanted call screening, that is a Pixel feature from Phone by Google, not something Gemini provides.

Can Gemini make phone calls?
Yes, on Android. It can place calls through your default phone app and through WhatsApp, and you need an active mobile plan. It does not work through Google Messages or on the web. What it cannot do is accept or reject incoming calls, which Google states explicitly.
Can Gemini answer or screen my calls?
No. Google documents that the phone integration cannot help you accept or reject calls. Call Screen is a separate Pixel feature from Phone by Google, not a Gemini capability. Gemini Nano contributes contextual reply suggestions, which is a much narrower role than screening calls.
Has Gemini replaced Google Assistant?
Not entirely, despite how often that is claimed. Assistant is gone from most mobile devices, but it persists on devices that do not meet the minimum requirements, and Google's own Android Auto documentation still refers to talking to Gemini or Google Assistant. Wear OS documentation still covers both.
Does Gemini work on Android Auto?
Yes. It handles calls, messages, navigation and media, and Gemini Live is available in the car. You need a compatible car and Gemini set as your digital assistant. It is also rolling out to cars with Google built in.
What can Gemini do on iPhone that it cannot on Android, or the reverse?
The Utilities layer is Android-only, so on iPhone there is no call placing, messaging, alarms, settings control or lock-screen access, and Gemini cannot be the default assistant. Chat, voice, Gemini Live with camera and screen share, image generation and summarising Gmail and Drive all work on iOS.
