Tested across 50 prompts on Ideogram 3.0 in May 2026
We ran 50 paired prompts on Ideogram 3.0 and the same prompts on Midjourney v7, DALL-E 3, Flux 1.1 Pro, and Recraft V3. Categories covered logos with taglines, packaging mockups, event posters, social media headers, book covers, brand concept boards, and Canvas inpaint replacements.
Every output was scored on text accuracy (correct letters, correct spacing, correct kerning), prompt adherence, and design polish. We also timed first-result latency on the priority queue to validate the speed claims on each paid tier. The verdict below is built from that hands-on output.

Ideogram pricing, plan by plan
Prices verified on May 18, 2026 from ideogram.ai/pricing. We re-check the table on the 1st of each quarter.
| Plan | Monthly cost | Generations | Top model | Private mode | Commercial | API |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 10 daily slow generations | Ideogram 2a | No (public gallery) | No | No |
| Basic | $8 / mo (annual) | 400 priority + unlimited slow | Ideogram 3.0 | 100 private / mo | Yes | No |
| Plus | $20 / mo (annual) | 1,000 priority + unlimited slow | Ideogram 3.0 | Unlimited private | Yes | No |
| Pro | $60 / mo (annual) | 3,000 priority + unlimited slow | Ideogram 3.0 | Unlimited private | Yes | Discount on API credits |
Cost math
How many priority images can you actually generate per month?
Slow generations are unlimited on every paid tier, but priority generations are the ones that finish in 5-to-8 seconds. Below is what each plan buys in priority generations, with verified May 2026 numbers from ideogram.ai/pricing.
| Plan | Priority / month | Slow / month | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 0 | Unlimited | Slow only, 10-30 second waits, public gallery |
| Basic ($8) | 400 | Unlimited | Priority generations finish in 5-8 seconds |
| Plus ($20) | 1000 | Unlimited | Plus unlimited private generations |
| Pro ($60) | 3000 | Unlimited | Best dollar-per-image for high-volume creators |
What this means. If you ship more than 15 hero images per week, the Plus plan at $20 per month is the natural fit. If you generate fewer than 100 priority images per month, Basic at $8 per month is plenty. Pro is for high-volume creators or API-leaning workflows.

How to write Ideogram prompts that get usable text
Ideogram has one rule that nobody tells you. Always put the text you want rendered inside straight quotes. The model treats quoted strings as literal tokens and renders them more accurately than unquoted text.
Works well
“Vintage travel poster, the words ‘Visit Iceland’ in bold sans-serif type at the top, a glacial landscape below, 1960s national park poster style, four-color print look.”
Quoted text. One subject. One era reference. One specific design direction. Ideogram 3.0 nails this on the first generation roughly 8 out of 10 times.
Falls apart
“Make me a poster that says visit iceland with mountains, glaciers, the northern lights, geysers, also some puffins and a viking and modern Reykjavik skyline, very cinematic, 8k hyper-realistic dramatic.”
Unquoted text. Stacked subjects. Conflicting time periods (Vikings + modern skyline). Style adjective soup. The model will pick three elements and ignore the rest.
Pro tip from our testing
For multi-word headlines, name a real type style (Bauhaus geometric sans, 1970s slab serif, condensed display gothic). Ideogram interprets named typographic styles correctly far more often than generic words like “modern” or “clean”.
What surprised us after 50 paired prompts
The text-rendering reputation is real, but it is more nuanced than the marketing suggests. Ideogram 3.0 nails one to four words of headline copy roughly 9 out of 10 times. For 5 to 12 word headlines it drops to about 7 out of 10. Anything over 15 words starts to lose individual letters or cram the layout. The practical ceiling is around 60 characters of total text per image. Above that you should split into multiple compositions.
We were less impressed with Magic Prompt than the documentation made us expect. For exploration it is fine. For precise compositional control it is actively counterproductive, since it rewrites your prompt and often substitutes one of your specific terms for something close-but-different. We now leave Magic Prompt off for any prompt we have already iterated on.
Canvas changed how we use the product. Before Canvas, Ideogram was a single-generation tool that we opened, made one image with, and closed. After Canvas we use it as an iterative surface, generating four variations, picking the best, using Magic Fill to fix the bottom line of copy, then extending the frame. It is the workflow we wished Midjourney v7 had.
Style References on Ideogram 3.0 are good but not as flexible as Midjourney’s sref. Ideogram tends to blend references conservatively, sometimes ignoring distinctive parts of a style image. For brand-system enforcement we still prefer Recraft V3’s explicit Brand Styles feature, which trains on your specific brand guidelines rather than inferring from a reference image.
Who should pick Ideogram (and who should not)
Our take after 50 prompts. Pick the row that describes your situation.
Pick Ideogram if your work needs readable text inside the image
Posters, packaging mockups, book covers, logo-with-tagline concepts, event flyers, social headers, billboard mockups. Ideogram 3.0 is the right default. Nothing else in May 2026 spells as reliably.
Pick Ideogram if you want a free tier that does not water-mark
The Free tier is slow and public-gallery only, but the output itself has no watermark. For weekend hobbyists and students this is the most generous policy of the major image models.
Skip Ideogram if you want painterly, dreamy, fashion-forward aesthetic
Midjourney v7 still wins the pure-aesthetic category for editorial illustration, fashion shoots, and painterly moodboards. Ideogram’s default style is cleaner and more design-oriented, not as evocative for art direction.
Skip Ideogram if you need vector SVG export for brand work
Recraft V3 is the right pick for vector-native design. Ideogram outputs raster only, even though its text fidelity is the strongest in the field. For SVG, hand the chosen concept to Recraft.
Consider Ideogram carefully if you need text longer than 60 characters per image
Past roughly 60 characters of total in-image text, even Ideogram 3.0 starts to drop letters or cram layout. For long copy, set the text in a design tool afterward and use Ideogram for the underlying art.
Ideogram AI questions, answered
What is Ideogram and who built it?
Ideogram is an AI text-to-image model built by Ideogram Inc, a San Francisco AI lab founded in 2022 by former Google Brain and Google Imagen researchers. Ideogram is the model that solved the AI typography problem first. While Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and the early DALL-E versions could not reliably spell words inside an image, Ideogram's first preview in August 2023 generated correctly-spelled multi-word text. The company raised an $80M Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz in 2024 and shipped Ideogram 3.0 on March 26, 2025.
How much does Ideogram cost in May 2026?
Ideogram has four tiers. Free, $0, with 10 slow generations per day and a public gallery. Basic at $8 per month on the annual plan, with 400 priority generations per month plus unlimited slow plus 100 private generations. Plus at $20 per month on the annual plan, with 1,000 priority plus unlimited slow plus unlimited private. Pro at $60 per month on the annual plan, with 3,000 priority generations plus unlimited slow plus API discounts. Monthly billing is roughly 30 percent more expensive than annual. Verified from ideogram.ai/pricing on May 18, 2026.
What makes Ideogram's text rendering better than Midjourney or DALL-E?
Ideogram was trained with a token-level objective that explicitly models the relationship between a prompt's quoted text and the pixels that should render that text. Midjourney v7 and DALL-E 3 treat text more like any other visual element, which is why they tend to invent letters, drop letters, or misspell beyond two or three words. Ideogram 3.0 holds correct spelling up to roughly 60 characters of text per image. For posters, logos with taglines, book covers, packaging mockups, and any design that has multi-word copy, Ideogram is the default pick.
What is Magic Prompt in Ideogram?
Magic Prompt is a feature that takes your short prompt and rewrites it into a longer, more detailed one before generation. Instead of typing a 5-word prompt and getting a generic result, Magic Prompt expands it to roughly 60 to 100 words with composition, style, lighting, and material details inferred from your intent. You can toggle Magic Prompt on or off per generation. We leave it on for exploration and off when we have a precise prompt we want the model to follow literally. Magic Prompt is what gives Ideogram its accessibility for non-designers.
What is Ideogram Canvas?
Ideogram Canvas is an infinite-canvas editing surface inside ideogram.ai, launched September 24, 2024. It lets you place multiple generated images on a canvas, inpaint specific regions with Magic Fill, extend an image's frame with Extend, and remix elements across images. It is comparable to Adobe Firefly's web canvas or Krea's editor surface. Canvas is the feature that turned Ideogram from a single-generation tool into a workflow tool. Magic Fill specifically is where Ideogram's text strength shows up at the editing stage, replacing the text on a sign or label correctly the first time.
What are Style References in Ideogram 3.0?
Style References landed with Ideogram 3.0 on March 26, 2025. You upload one or more reference images, then prompt as normal, and the model transfers the colour palette, composition style, and rendering treatment of your references onto the new generation. It is comparable to Midjourney's --sref parameter but applied through a UI rather than a flag. You can layer multiple references, and the model blends them. Style References plus type-correct text rendering is the combination that made Ideogram a default choice for marketing creative teams in 2025.
Does Ideogram have a developer API?
Yes. The Ideogram API launched alongside Ideogram 2.0 on August 21, 2024 and is available at developer.ideogram.ai. Pricing is metered per generation. Ideogram 3.0 is roughly $0.06 per image, Ideogram 2.0 is roughly $0.08 per image, and Ideogram 2a (the cheaper variant) is roughly $0.04 per image. The Pro plan unlocks a discount on API credits. Third-party aggregators including fal.ai, Replicate, and PiAPI also resell Ideogram endpoints if you want one API key across multiple image models.
How does Ideogram compare to Midjourney for general image work?
Midjourney still wins on pure aesthetic appeal for painterly and fashion-forward styles. Ideogram wins on text rendering, prompt adherence, and design-oriented work. The decision rule we use after testing both extensively: if the image needs readable text, packaging mockup copy, a logo with a tagline, a poster headline, pick Ideogram. If you want an editorial illustration, fashion shoot, dreamy painterly mood, pick Midjourney. For brand and design system work, Recraft V3 is also strong because of its native SVG vector export.
Can I use Ideogram for commercial work?
Yes on the Basic, Plus, and Pro tiers per the ideogram.ai Terms of Service. The Free tier explicitly forbids commercial use and posts every generation to a public gallery. Paid tiers grant you full commercial rights to use, modify, and distribute your outputs subject to the standard content policies (no minors in inappropriate contexts, no real political figures in fabricated scenes, no identifiable likeness without consent). Ideogram is the only major image model whose Free tier blocks commercial use through the public-gallery requirement, which is a soft enforcement mechanism but a real one.
What is the difference between Ideogram 2.0 and Ideogram 2a?
Ideogram 2.0 is the full quality model from August 21, 2024. Ideogram 2a, released October 30, 2024, is a smaller, cheaper variant that costs roughly half as much per API call. The output is slightly noisier on complex compositions and the photoreal style is less crisp, but text rendering and prompt adherence are nearly identical. For text-heavy designs at scale (programmatic ad creative, e-commerce labels) 2a is the better cost-performance pick. For one-off hero images, 2.0 or 3.0 is the right choice.
Why do my Ideogram images sometimes ignore part of my prompt?
Three common causes. First, your prompt is over 90 words and the model is dropping the tail. Trim to under 80 words. Second, you have Magic Prompt on and it rewrote your prompt in a way that lost a critical detail. Toggle Magic Prompt off and see if the precise prompt works better. Third, your prompt has internal contradictions (a vintage 1950s diner with a futuristic neon hologram) that the model resolves by ignoring one of them. Restructure the prompt to remove the conflict. Ideogram 3.0 has tighter prompt adherence than 2.0, so upgrading the model tier also helps.
Is Ideogram safe for client deliverables?
Yes for posters, packaging mockups, social media graphics, book covers, ad creative, brand concepts, and any design where text accuracy matters. We would not use Ideogram outputs as final print-ready hero assets without a designer-led cleanup pass, since fine kerning, vertical alignment, and small text below 12pt can still drift. We would use Ideogram to draft, iterate, and propose creative directions, then hand the chosen direction to a designer for production polish. For purely vector and SVG-ready work, Recraft V3 is the better default since it exports clean vector paths.
The Ideogram stack. Three layers: model selection, in-product features, developer API.
