Documentation-based comparison, checked September 24, 2026. We have not completed a paired product test. The portal brief below is a proposed evaluation; no scores, measured build costs, or reliability winner are claimed. Both vendors have affiliate links on this page.
| Requirement | Lovable | Base44 |
|---|---|---|
| Backend | Built-in Cloud or external Supabase | Integrated database and authentication |
| Entry paid annual commitment | Pro: $250 yearly, about $20.83/month equivalent | Starter: $192 yearly, $16/month equivalent |
| GitHub | Documented project synchronization | Listed on Builder and higher plan cards |
| Annual plan with Base44 GitHub eligibility | Compare the Lovable plan matching your other requirements | Builder: $480 yearly, $40/month equivalent |
| Usage budget | Build, Cloud, and app AI usage need attention | Message and integration allowances; connected services may bill separately |
| After code export | Check Cloud or external Supabase dependencies | Check remaining Base44 services and SDK calls |
My short verdict
Choose by the requirements you can verify. A lower entry subscription is useful only if it includes the features you need. A GitHub repository is useful only if someone can maintain the application and its connected services. We would run the same small workflow before making an annual commitment.
It makes sense when
- A founder comparing two candidates for a defined web app.
- A small team evaluating a client portal or request tracker.
- A buyer who can involve a developer in the handoff review.
I would choose something else when
- You need a guaranteed delivery date from an untested prompt.
- You cannot assign responsibility for checking permissions and failures.
- Your decision requires measured performance results that this guide does not yet provide.
01
Compare the bill you will actually pay
The annual figures in the table are commitments, not month-to-month charges. Base44 Starter's annual total is $58 below Lovable Pro's starting annual total. That is arithmetic, not a claim of equal capabilities or lower total ownership cost.
If GitHub integration is required, Base44's current plan cards move the comparison to Builder or above. Write down your must-have features first, then compare eligible plans. Check checkout for current prices, tax, renewal terms, and the billing interval before paying.
Do not compare raw credit counts as if they buy identical work. Keep a record of the initial build, correction attempts, and representative ongoing use. Include any directly billed connected services in the budget. Our separate Lovable pricing guide explains its starting tiers in more detail.
02
Both can have a backend; the configuration matters
Lovable Cloud includes managed backend services. Lovable also documents an external Supabase connection. Decide which arrangement you want early: its Cloud documentation says moving to an external Supabase project is not a one-click migration.
Base44 includes backend features in its plans. Its SDK can also connect an external app to Base44 services. This means a frontend running elsewhere can still depend on Base44; a different frontend host does not by itself establish backend independence.
For a client portal, define where records and uploaded files live, who administers accounts, and how permissions are enforced. Ask both candidates the same questions and inspect the generated behavior.
03
Use this same portal brief in both tools
Build a client request portal using fictional data. An admin can create clients and assign requests. A client can sign in, view only their own requests, add a comment, and see a status change. Include clear loading, empty, and failed-save states. Make it usable on a phone.
Keep the brief, seed records, and acceptance criteria identical. Save the initial prompt and each corrective instruction. This is our proposed test protocol, not a report of a completed build.
- Permissions: try opening another client's request directly and verify that access is refused.
- Persistence: add a comment, reload, and confirm the same record remains.
- Failure: attempt an invalid submission and confirm that it is explained without losing the form input.
- Usability: navigate the main journey by keyboard and on a narrow screen.
- Usage: record the plan, starting allowance, consumed credits, elapsed active work, and unresolved defects.
- Handoff: ask a developer to inspect the exported repository and list the services required to operate it.
04
Treat code export and migration as separate checks
A repository can preserve source code while the running application still depends on hosted services. For each candidate, list authentication, data, storage, functions, domains, environment variables, and external APIs. Mark which can be moved and which require replacement work.
Ask the maintainer to describe a recovery procedure and an exit estimate for the actual app. Do not infer either from a generic ownership statement. This review also helps you decide whether either builder fits the support capacity of your team.
05
How to choose after the evaluation
Reject a candidate that cannot meet a required workflow or permission rule within your agreed evaluation budget. For those that pass, compare the eligible subscription, observed correction effort, expected running bill, and available maintenance support.
If the result is close, use a short billing commitment while you validate real usage. If both fail a must-have requirement, revise the scope or involve a developer before buying more credits. A failed test is useful evidence; it is not a reason to keep generating indefinitely.
Ready to test it with a real job?
Check which plan supports your required workflow, then evaluate one representative task. Record output quality, correction time, and actual usage before expanding.

Questions people ask before paying
Is Base44 cheaper than Lovable?
Base44 Starter's displayed annual total is lower than Lovable Pro's starting annual total. That does not establish lower total cost: Base44 GitHub eligibility starts at Builder on the current plan cards, and usage and connected services can change the bill.
Does Lovable need a separate Supabase account?
Not for every project. Lovable offers built-in Cloud services and also supports an external Supabase connection. Choose and verify the arrangement for your app.
Can I move either app simply by exporting code?
Do not assume so. Inspect the backend, authentication, storage, functions, secrets, and connected services. Repository export and complete service migration are different tasks.
Which one is faster to build with?
We have not measured a paired build, so this guide does not declare a speed winner. Use the shared portal brief and record corrections, active work time, usage, and outstanding defects.
Do affiliate commissions decide the recommendation?
Both tools have affiliate links here. The decision criteria are the project's required features, verified behavior, eligible plans, and maintenance needs; we do not award a winner based on commission.
