How do I use role-based prompts to get more specialized answers from AI tools?

Role-based prompting means opening your prompt by telling the AI who it is: 'You are an experienced hiring manager at a tech company', 'Act as a physiotherapist explaining to a runner', 'You are a skeptical editor reviewing a pitch'. The role shifts which patterns the model draws on, so the same question gets answered with the vocabulary, depth, priorities and blind-spot awareness of that specialty instead of a general-knowledge summary.

Specificity is what makes it work. 'Act as a marketer' barely changes anything, because marketer is almost as generic as the default. 'Act as a lifecycle email marketer for a B2B SaaS with a 14-day trial' changes the answer substantially, because it narrows the model to a much more precise slice of its training. As a rule, add the seniority, the specialty, and the situation the expert works in.

Pairing the role with an audience is the second half of the technique. 'You are a cardiologist' produces clinical language; 'You are a cardiologist explaining to a worried patient with no medical background' produces something a human can actually use. Role sets the expertise, audience sets the register, and together they control the answer far better than either alone.

Two honest caveats. A role does not grant real credentials: telling the model it is a lawyer does not make its legal claims reliable, so verification still matters in high-stakes domains.
