How can I use AI to automate repetitive tasks and free up time for more important work?

Start by listing what you actually repeat, not what seems automatable in theory. For most professionals the list looks similar: weekly status reports, meeting notes and follow-ups, formatting and cleaning data, triaging email, drafting the same three types of message, and moving information from one document into another. Then pick one task using two filters: it follows rules you can write down, and its output can be checked in seconds. That task is your first automation.

The method that works is to do the task manually with the AI a few times before automating anything. Paste the inputs, give the instructions, refine until the output is consistently right, and save the winning prompt. Only then move it to something scheduled or agent-driven, for example a recurring task in Claude Cowork or a scheduled workflow in your assistant of choice. Skipping the manual phase is why most automation attempts quietly fail: the rules were never actually pinned down.

Guard the failure modes from day one. Keep a human approval step on anything that sends, deletes, publishes or spends. Build in a self-report so the automation tells you what it did and flags anything unusual, because a silent automation that quietly breaks is worse than no automation at all. And leave judgment-heavy tasks, anything with exceptions, politics or taste, in your own hands; automating those produces confident errors at scale.

Expect the compounding to come from boring places.
