How do I integrate AI assistants into my daily work routine without getting distracted?
Quick answer
Attach AI to tasks you already do rather than adding AI time to your day: draft the report you were writing anyway, summarise the thread you were reading anyway. Batch your AI work, keep one assistant instead of five tabs, and treat exploring the tool as a separate hobby from using it.
The distraction problem is real and it has a specific cause: treating AI as a destination instead of a layer. The fix is to attach AI to tasks that already exist in your day rather than creating AI time. You were going to write that report anyway, so draft it with the assistant. You were going to read that long thread anyway, so summarise it first. When every AI interaction starts from a task you already had, there is nothing to wander off into.
Structure helps more than willpower. Batch your AI-assisted work into blocks, for example one morning block for drafting and one afternoon block for review and admin, instead of context-switching to the assistant every few minutes. Keep one primary assistant open rather than three tabs of different tools, because tool-hopping is its own distraction dressed up as diligence. And write prompts specific enough to get a usable answer in one or two turns, since vague prompts create the long meandering conversations where time disappears.
Separate using from exploring, deliberately. New models and features are genuinely interesting, and exploring them is fine, but it is hobby time, not work time. Give curiosity its own slot, a Friday half hour, and protect working blocks from it. People who feel AI made them less productive usually spent their gains on unstructured exploring without noticing.
Finally, notice the moment of diminishing returns inside each task. The tenth revision of an email is rarely better than the third. Decide before you start what good enough looks like, ship at good enough, and move on. AI removes the friction of producing; you have to supply the discipline of finishing.
