Why do so many people write “ChatGBT”?
Three reasons converge to make the GBT misspelling probably the most common typo in tech history:
P and B sound nearly identical
Linguistically, P and B are both bilabial plosives, consonants made by closing both lips and releasing them. The only difference is voicing (your vocal cords vibrate for B, not for P). Over a phone, a podcast, a noisy bar, or a video at low volume, listeners genuinely can’t tell them apart. So when someone says “ChatGPT”, listeners who’ve never seen it written often parse it as “ChatGBT”.
It spread by word-of-mouth faster than any product in history
ChatGPT hit 100 million users in 2 months, faster than TikTok, Instagram, or any prior consumer tech. Most of that growth was viral spoken word: friends, family, podcasts, news anchors all saying the name out loud before showing the website. Hundreds of millions of people heard the name before they ever saw it spelled.
GBT looks “cleaner” than GPT
The letters G-B-T appear in standard alphabetical-ish order (G then B then T). G-P-T jumps backward (G, then P which is later in the alphabet, then T). When the brain is reconstructing letters from memory, it tends to smooth the order, making GBT feel more natural to write even though GPT is correct.

What this data tells us: The misspelling cluster is genuinely massive, bigger than the search volume of most entire SaaS products. The P/B confusion is responsible for nearly half of all errors, confirming the linguistic explanation: p and b are bilabial plosives that listeners can’t reliably distinguish over audio. The other half splits among letter transpositions (chatgtp, chatpgt) and dropped letters (chagpt, chgpt).

What does “GPT” actually stand for?
GPT = Generative Pre-trained Transformer. Each word does a specific job:
The model generates new content (text, code, images) rather than just classifying or labeling existing content. Older AI was mostly about deciding things (“is this email spam?”). Generative AI creates new things.
The model was trained on enormous amounts of text data (books, websites, Wikipedia, code repositories) BEFORE OpenAI released it to the public. That pre-training is what gives ChatGPT its general knowledge, it’s not learning live from your conversations.
The specific type of neural network architecture invented by Google researchers in a 2017 paper called “Attention Is All You Need”.
