How we tested this

Free tier tested across 5 languages, May 2026

We tested the ChatGPT free plan over a full week with daily-use patterns in five languages, English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and German. Each session logged: when the daily message cap hit, what the model switched to after the cap, which features still worked at zero cost, and which were silently degraded.

The findings: the free plan held up better than expected for everyday use, but cap behavior is opaque, OpenAI doesn’t show a counter, and the cap shifts based on server load. Non-English performance is identical to English on text tasks; voice mode varies by language. The fake “free ChatGPT” clones flagged in the “Avoid” section below are real and active as of testing date.
