Is Claude free in 2026?
Quick answer
Yes. The free plan gives access to Claude Sonnet 4.6 (the default model), plus Artifacts, chat memory, basic web search, and file uploads. It does not include Claude Code, Research mode, or the top Opus and Fable models, which are on Pro.
Claude has a genuinely capable free tier at $0. Since February 2026 the free default model is Claude Sonnet 4.6, which is strong for everyday writing, analysis, and coding help, along with limited access to the fast Haiku model. Free also includes Artifacts (the side panel for documents and code), chat memory, basic web search you can toggle on, and basic file uploads.
What free leaves out is the power-user layer. It does not include Claude Code (the coding agent), Research mode for multi-source reports, full access to the top Opus model, or the newest frontier Fable model, and its usage is capped by a conversation budget rather than a published message count. For casual use, none of that matters; for heavy or professional use, it is exactly what you upgrade for.
Anthropic notably does not publish hard messages-per-period numbers for any tier, describing limits as a usage budget instead, so the free ceiling is felt in practice as running out during a long session rather than a stated cap. For light users, that ceiling is rarely hit.
The honest summary: Claude free is one of the more useful free AI plans because Sonnet 4.6 is a serious model, and many casual users never need to pay. You upgrade to Pro when you want the best models, Claude Code, Research, or higher limits.
