Features & Usage
What is Claude Code?
Quick answer
Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool that works in your terminal and codebase: it reads your project, writes and edits code across many files, runs tasks, and fixes its own errors. It is available on paid plans, not the free tier.
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent, and it goes well beyond chat-window code snippets. It operates on your actual codebase, reading your project's files, planning a change, editing across multiple files, running commands and tests, and iterating on its own errors until a task is done. It is the tool behind a lot of the serious 'let the AI implement this feature' workflows developers use in 2026.
The difference from pasting code into a chat is autonomy and context. Because Claude Code sees your whole project and can act in steps, it handles multi-file features, large refactors, and debugging that spans a codebase, rather than one isolated function. Paired with Claude's strong coding models (Sonnet, Opus, and Fable 5 for the hardest jobs), it is a genuinely capable engineering assistant.
It is a paid feature, available on Pro and higher, not on the free tier. Heavy users who run long Claude Code sessions are also the most common candidates for the Max plans, since agentic coding consumes usage budget faster than casual chat.
