India CV Format: The 2026 Resume Guide
Career Objective on top, Personal Details near the bottom, Declaration at the end. The complete Indian resume structure for IT services, product companies, banks, and PSUs, plus AI prompts to tailor each application.
By Michael Okeje, Founder of GPTPrompts.AI
The Indian resume in 2026 sits between US, UK, and German conventions in ways that reflect the diversity of Indian hiring. IT services companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL) and PSUs expect a traditional structure with Career Objective, Personal Details, and Declaration intact. Product companies (Indian startups, MNC GCCs of Google, Adobe, Amazon, Microsoft) and Wellfound-listed startups have moved closer to the US convention, where Career Objective is replaced by a Professional Summary and Personal Details are pared down. The same candidate may need two slightly different versions of their resume depending on which segment they are applying to.
This guide covers the complete Indian resume structure for 2026, the differences across IT services versus product company expectations, the AI prompts that tailor for both, and the localisation steps for candidates applying from outside India. It also covers Naukri-specific formatting rules that meaningfully affect parser scoring.
Indian Resume Conventions: IT Services vs Product Company
The same candidate often needs two versions. Differences that matter when applying to TCS or Infosys versus a Bangalore product startup.

How to Write an Indian Resume: 7 Steps
Set up the document with Indian conventions
Open Word or Google Docs and set the page size to A4 with 2 cm margins. Use Calibri or Arial at 11 points body text, 12 to 13 points for section headings, and 18 points for your name. Place your name at the top centre, followed by a single line with your phone number with country code (+91), email, LinkedIn URL, and current city. For IT services and traditional employer applications, place a passport-style photo in the top-right corner. Save the master file as .docx for Naukri uploads and convert to PDF for direct corporate portal submissions.
Write a tailored Career Objective
Underneath your contact details, write a 2 to 3 line Career Objective that is specific to the role you are applying for. Avoid generic phrases like 'seeking a challenging environment' which add no signal. Include three things: the type of role, your years and type of experience or relevant qualifications, and one specific value you bring. For 5+ years of experience, expand the Career Objective into a Professional Summary of 4 to 5 lines that includes one quantified achievement. Update this section for each application rather than reusing a generic version.
Build the Education section with percentages and CGPA
List education in reverse chronological order. For each entry: degree, specialisation, year of completion, institution, and percentage or CGPA. Format: 'B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering, 2023, IIT Madras, CGPA: 8.7 out of 10.' Include 10th and 12th board exam results for freshers and candidates within 3 years of work; omit for 5+ years of experience. For overseas degrees, state the original grade and the Indian conversion. Indian recruiters at IT services companies place significant weight on academic performance, particularly for freshers and laterals up to 5 years of experience.
Build Work Experience and Internships sections
List roles in reverse chronological order. For each: job title, company name, city, and date range (Month YYYY to Present or Month YYYY to Month YYYY). Underneath, write 3 to 5 bullet points that lead with strong action verbs and quantify outcomes (revenue impact, headcount, efficiency gains, customer numbers). For freshers, list internships in their own section with the same structure. Include academic projects with technologies used and quantified outcomes for fresher resumes. Indian recruiters scan for technology stack matches, so name specific frameworks, languages, and tools rather than generic descriptors.
Add Technical Skills, Certifications, and Achievements
Group technical skills into clear categories: Programming Languages, Frameworks, Databases, Cloud Platforms, DevOps and Tools, Methodologies. Avoid a single comma-separated dump. List certifications with the issuing body and date (AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate, 2024). For freshers, add an Achievements section listing academic awards, hackathon wins, paper publications, leadership roles, and competitive exam ranks (JEE, GATE, CAT) where applicable. Indian recruiters at IT services and product companies scan this section closely for evidence of academic and competitive distinction.
Add Personal Details and Declaration
Near the bottom of the resume, add a Personal Details section listing: date of birth (DD/MM/YYYY), languages known with proficiency, current location, and notice period. For traditional employer applications (IT services, PSU, banking), include marital status, nationality, and possibly father's name if applying to government. For product companies and startups, retain only DOB, languages, location, and notice period. Add the Declaration as the final element: 'I hereby declare that the above information is true and correct to the best of my knowledge.' followed by Place, Date, and your full name as signature. Omit the Declaration for product companies and international roles where it carries no value.
Tailor with AI and verify with Naukri parser
Open ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and use the AI prompt below to tailor the Career Objective and Work Experience to the specific job posting. Specify Indian English, Indian recruitment vocabulary, and INR or percentage quantification. After the AI rewrite, paste the resume into Naukri's profile and check the resume score, or use Jobscan for keyword match against the job description. Aim for 75 percent or higher keyword match. Save the final document as .docx for Naukri and PDF for direct corporate portals. Submit through the company's career portal where possible (rather than Naukri) because direct portal submissions get higher visibility with the hiring manager than Naukri-routed applications.
Career Objective Examples (Indian Convention)
Three examples across career stages, each tailored to the role rather than generic. Avoid 'challenging environment' phrasing.

Looking to transition into a product engineering role at a Bangalore-based product company where I can apply my Java Spring Boot and AWS expertise to high-scale consumer or B2B SaaS products.
Engineering Manager with 11 years of experience leading product engineering teams in B2B SaaS, currently managing a 14-engineer team at a Series C fintech where I have driven a 38 percent reduction in customer-reported defects over 18 months and shipped 3 major platform launches. Strong technical foundation in distributed systems, Kafka, and AWS, paired with proven hiring and performance management experience. Seeking a Director of Engineering role at a Series C+ Indian product company building for global markets.
AI Prompts to Tailor an Indian Resume
Production-tested prompts for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, with Naukri parser scoring as the verification step.
Common Indian Resume Mistakes
1. Generic Career Objective
'Seeking a challenging environment that allows me to grow professionally and contribute to organisational goals' adds no signal and wastes prime resume real estate. Replace every generic objective with a 2 to 3 line role-specific statement that names the role type, your years and type of experience, and one specific value you bring.
2. Same resume for IT services and product company applications
The conventions diverge enough that a single resume cannot serve both well. Maintain two versions: a traditional Indian format for IT services, PSU, and bank applications, and a product-company format for Indian startups, MNC GCCs, and Wellfound roles. The AI prompt above converts between the two in 5 minutes.
3. Skills as a single comma-separated dump
Naukri's parser scores resumes higher when skills are grouped logically (Programming Languages, Frameworks, Databases, Cloud, DevOps, Methodologies). A single line listing 40 technologies provides less signal than 6 grouped categories with 5 to 7 technologies each.
4. Inflated grades or invented metrics
Indian recruiters at IT services companies routinely verify CGPA, percentages, and listed achievements at the offer stage, particularly for fresher hiring. Inflated grades caught at verification end the offer immediately and may be flagged to other companies through informal recruiter networks.
5. Hiding notice period until the offer stage
Stating a 30-day notice period when the actual contractual period is 90 days creates an offer-stage problem when the recruiter calculates joining timelines. State the actual notice period upfront, including any buyout option you would consider, and let the recruiter make the timing decision.
6. Submitting a US resume to a Naukri-routed application
A US-format single-page resume submitted to a TCS or Infosys role is read as not localised. Add the Career Objective, Personal Details, and Declaration. Switch to Indian English. Include 10th and 12th percentages if you are early career. Naukri's parser also performs better with .docx than PDF for non-product-company roles.
