What these prompts are for

Gemini can look like a research assistant because it will browse, read a PDF, and write a tidy report. That is useful only after you decide which sources are allowed. These prompts are for that decision. They assume you already have an assignment, a question, and files you are permitted to use.

They are not a second copy of the ChatGPT academic guide, which is built around argument maps and a source ledger, or the Claude academic guide, which is built around pasting a full draft for a skeptical read. If you need those jobs, use those pages. If you are in Gemini, start with the plan and the source picker.

The longer workflow, from question to outline to claim audit, is on How to Use Gemini for Research Paper Writing. Literature-review pages and case-study pages are linked at the bottom. They are neighboring tasks, not substitutes for opening the papers.

How to brief Gemini

Open Gemini, choose Deep Research when you want a multi-step pass, and read the plan before you start it. Google's help page says Search is included unless you remove it, and that Gmail or Drive appear only when Workspace is connected. If the assignment is "use only the readings," turn Search off and upload the readings. If you are hunting for candidates, leave Search on and treat every link as unread.

In a Doc, paste a section and ask for comments. Do not ask for a new essay in the same message. Publishers that follow COPE and ICMJE expect you to disclose assistance and do not accept a model as an author. Your syllabus can be stricter than that. When the rule is unclear, ask the instructor before you submit generated sentences.

Replace the brackets. Delete a line you cannot fill. If a file is missing, the prompt should say so instead of guessing.

Edit the Deep Research plan before it runs

Gemini writes a plan and waits. Change the plan. Do not start research until the question, dates, and sources match the assignment.

I am using Deep Research for a course paper. Assignment limits: [word count, required sources, date range, discipline]. Working question: [question]. Before you search, draft a research plan with: the question you will actually investigate, inclusion and exclusion rules, source types I allow, and what you will not conclude. Wait for me to edit the plan. Do not write the paper.

Revise this research plan so it cannot wander. Plan: [paste the plan Gemini proposed]. Cut any step that looks for papers I have not named, statistics I did not ask for, or a thesis I have not chosen. Return the edited plan as a checklist I can approve. Do not start the report.

My course forbids open-web sources for this task. In the source picker I will turn Google Search off and upload only these files: [list labels]. Rewrite the plan so every claim must come from an uploaded file, with a page or section, or be marked NOT IN FILES. Do not suggest extra readings.

Here is my edited plan and the reason I changed it: [paste]. List three ways the report could still overreach: a date range, a population, or a method I did not allow. Give me one sentence to add to the plan for each risk. Then stop.

Read only the papers I upload

Ten files is the Apps Help limit in one prompt. Label each file. Missing fields stay missing.

Files attached, labeled S1 to S[n]. Use only these files. For each, extract: research question, method, population or corpus, main result with the page, stated limitation, and a quotation under 25 words with the page. If a field is not in the file, write UNKNOWN. Do not add studies from memory or from Search.

I hit the upload limit and left these papers out: [titles I have already read]. Do not invent their findings. Build the matrix from the attached files only, and add a row called NOT ATTACHED for each title I listed, with every field set to NOT ATTACHED.

This PDF is long. Tell me which sections you actually used and which you may have skimmed. Then answer only this question from the pages you used: [question]. Quote the page. If the answer needs a section you did not use, say which section I should read.

Compare S1 and S2 on one disagreement: [name it]. Table columns: claim, page, method difference, population difference, what neither paper establishes. Do not pick a winner. Do not cite anything outside the two files.

Drive and NotebookLM, with the door closed

Connected Drive or a NotebookLM notebook is still a source boundary. Name the files. Exclude the inbox unless the assignment is about your own correspondence.

Use only these Drive files, which I will select in Sources: [file names]. Do not use Gmail. Do not use Google Search. Question: [question]. For every point, name the file and the heading or page. If the files conflict, show both. If the files are silent, write NOT IN DRIVE FILES.

I added one NotebookLM notebook: [notebook name]. Treat the notebook as notes, not as peer-reviewed sources, unless a note quotes a paper I have labeled. List which notebook sources look like my notes and which look like published papers. Do not merge them into one bibliography.

A shared Drive folder may contain other students' drafts. Use only the files I name: [names]. If you see another person's essay, ignore it and tell me the filename so I can remove it. Do not summarize unpublished work that is not mine.

I am about to connect Gmail for a professor's feedback thread. Use only messages from [course label] in [month]. Extract requested changes. Do not quote personal mail, attachments that are not feedback, or other courses. If the thread is ambiguous, quote the line and mark it UNCLEAR.

Comment in the Doc. Do not replace it.

The draft is yours. Ask for locations and risks. A second prompt can offer wording after you choose the risk.

This is my Google Doc section, written by me: [paste]. Do not rewrite it. Return a comment list: sentence location, issue type (unsupported claim, undefined term, citation missing, certainty too strong, off question), and the question I should answer. Use my words in the location column.

Mark every factual sentence that has no citation in this passage. Do not add a source. Output a table: sentence, what kind of source it needs (data, paper, method note, or my own analysis), and a placeholder [CITATION NEEDED]. Passage: [paste].

I accept only these comments: [numbers]. Propose a replacement for each, in my vocabulary, same level of certainty. Show original and replacement. Do not touch the other sentences. Passage: [paste].

Compare my Doc to the source matrix. Matrix: [paste]. Draft: [paste]. Return mismatches only: claim in the Doc, matrix row, problem (scope, missing page, opposite finding). No praise. No new paragraph.

Turn Search leads into a checking list

When Search stays on, the output is a queue of links to open. It is not a works cited page.

Deep Research included Google Search. From the report below, build a checking list: link or title, what the report claims that source says, and the sentence in my draft that would depend on it. Status for every row: NOT OPENED. Do not format a bibliography. Report: [paste].

Separate the report into three piles: uploaded files I provided, web pages, and claims with no link. I will only cite the first pile after I re-read it. Web pages become search leads, not references, until I open them. Report: [paste].

Find places where the report uses a secondary page (news, blog, course slide) for a scholarly claim. List them. Suggest the kind of primary source I should look up in my library, without naming a specific paper you have not been given.

I opened these links and they do not say what the report claimed: [notes]. Rewrite the affected sentences as gaps: what I still need to find. Do not replace the broken claim with a different citation.

Abstract, disclosure, and the meeting with a supervisor

These prompts use text you already checked. They do not add findings.

Here is my results section and my abstract draft. List any number, claim, or conclusion in the abstract that the results section does not support, and any required result that the abstract omits. Do not rewrite yet. Results: [paste]. Abstract: [paste].

Write a disclosure paragraph of under 120 words from this log only: [tool, date, Deep Research or upload or Docs comments, what I kept, what I rejected]. Do not say the model conducted the research. Match this journal or course wording if I paste it: [rule or "none"].

Prepare a one-page brief for my supervisor. Inputs: question, current claim, source matrix, two decisions I need, and claims I have not checked. Use only this packet: [paste]. End with three questions. Do not invent committee expectations.

Read my introduction and my conclusion side by side. List claims that appear in one and not the other, and any conclusion that is stronger than the introduction's question. Do not add implications. Intro: [paste]. Conclusion: [paste].

Tips before you submit

  • Edit the Deep Research plan before you press Start research. The plan is the assignment boundary.
  • Turn Google Search off when the task is limited to files you upload or a Drive set you named.
  • Label files S1, S2, and so on. Ask for UNKNOWN instead of a guessed page number.
  • Ten files in one prompt is the documented Apps limit, and it is subject to availability. Do not expect the model to cover a folder you did not attach.
  • A long PDF can be partly ignored. Ask which sections were used, then read the rest.
  • Keep citations in a reference manager. Let the Doc hold the sentences.
  • Comment first, replace later, and only for comments you accept.
  • Write the disclosure from your log. Do not let the model describe work you did not do.

Academic writing FAQ

Can I use Gemini for academic writing?

You can use it to plan a search, read files you are allowed to upload, and comment on a draft you wrote. Whether that is permitted depends on the course, department, or journal. COPE and ICMJE guidance, which many publishers follow, treats a model as ineligible for authorship and expects disclosure. Some assignments allow none of this. Read the rule that applies to the work you will submit, and keep a short note of what you asked Gemini to do.

Is a Deep Research report a literature review?

No. Deep Research can draft a plan, browse sources you allow, and return a report with links. Google includes Search by default and lets you add files, Drive, Gmail, or a NotebookLM notebook when those connections are available. The report is a map of leads. A literature review still requires your search record, your inclusion rules, and papers you have opened. Use the research-paper how-to when you are ready to build that record.

How do I stop Gemini from inventing citations?

Do not ask it to supply a bibliography from a topic. Deselect Google Search when you only want the files you uploaded, tell it to quote page numbers from those files, and require UNKNOWN when a field is missing. Then open each paper. A link in a Deep Research report is a place to look, not a citation you can paste into a reference list.

How many files can I upload?

Gemini Apps Help says you can add up to 10 files in one prompt, subject to availability, and that very large files can miss details unless the account has a larger context window. Google describes a 1 million token window on Google AI Pro or Ultra as enough for about 1,500 pages of text. If a PDF is long, ask which sections were not used, and check those pages yourself.

Should I let Gemini rewrite my Google Doc?

Ask for comments and a change list first. A full rewrite can raise the certainty of a sentence, drop a citation, or replace your example with a smoother one you did not mean. Keep the original version. Accept only edits you can explain. If you want a paragraph-level revision loop with a source ledger, that workflow is on the ChatGPT academic prompts page, not here.

How is this different from Claude or ChatGPT for academic writing?

Those pages cover different jobs. ChatGPT academic prompts are for argument maps, evidence packets, and a source ledger. Claude academic writing is for pasting a full draft and stress-testing the logic. This page is for Gemini's source picker: the research plan, uploaded PDFs, Drive or NotebookLM, and comments in a Doc. Use the page that matches the tool in front of you.

Can Gemini in Docs replace my reference manager?

No. Docs is where the prose lives. Your reference manager or a hand-checked bibliography is where the citations live. Gemini can format details you paste. It should not fill in a missing DOI, volume, or page range from memory. If a field is blank, leave it blank until you look it up.

What should I disclose?

Follow the format your instructor or journal asks for. A useful private log is shorter: tool, date, whether you used Deep Research or an upload, and what you kept. Do not write that Gemini read the literature if you did not open the sources. Disclosure describes assistance. It does not transfer responsibility for the claims.
