Declare your level and the rules
Tell it your target language and level (A1 to C2, or describe it) and instruct it to respond only in that language, at that level. Without this it defaults to English or to material far above you.

Give it a role and a scenario
'You are a shopkeeper in Madrid, I am buying shoes.' Roleplay produces far more useful vocabulary than open chat, because it mirrors situations you will actually be in.

Set the correction style up front
Ask it to correct your mistakes after each message with a one-line explanation, then continue the conversation. Otherwise it will politely ignore your errors.

Use voice mode for speaking
Typing practises writing; speaking practises speaking. Voice conversation is the single most underused feature for language learners, and it removes the fear of getting it wrong in front of a person.

Ask for reading at your level
Request a short passage on a topic you like, at your level, with new vocabulary listed after. Reading material matched to your level is what builds fluency fastest and is hard to find elsewhere.

Every few sessions, ask what errors you keep repeating, then ask for ten targeted practice sentences on exactly those. This is where progress accelerates.

Common mistakes
- Not stating your level, so it replies far above you and you learn nothing.
- Letting it drift back into your native language. Restate the rule when this happens.
- Only typing. Speaking is the skill most learners lack, and voice mode is the fix.
- Trusting it on very current slang, which it can get subtly wrong or dated.
- Using it as your only input. You still need real speakers, shows, music and reading.

Is ChatGPT good for learning a language?
It is very good for conversation practice, corrections, grammar explanations and reading material matched to your level, which are the hardest things to get cheaply on your own. It is not a complete replacement for real exposure and human speakers, and it will not keep you consistent. Best used alongside real media and, ideally, real conversations.
Can ChatGPT help me practise speaking?
Yes, through voice mode, and it is the most underused feature for learners. You can hold a spoken conversation, get corrected, and repeat as often as you like with no embarrassment. That removes the biggest barrier most self-taught learners face.
Is ChatGPT better than Duolingo?
They do different jobs. Duolingo is better at structured progression, streaks and keeping you consistent. ChatGPT is far better at open conversation, answering 'why is it this way' and adapting to exactly what you need today. Many learners use an app for structure and ChatGPT for conversation and explanations.
Can ChatGPT correct my grammar in another language?
Yes, and reliably for major languages, provided you ask it to. By default it will be polite and let errors pass. Instruct it explicitly to correct every mistake with a short explanation, and it becomes a genuinely effective tutor.
