ChatGPT Team vs Business in 2026: Same Price, Different Security

The IT decision: SSO is the inflection point

I (the GPT Prompts editorial team) have rolled out ChatGPT Team workspaces and ChatGPT Business workspaces for our own use and for client projects, and the decision between the two tiers always comes down to one question. Does your IT team require single sign-on for new SaaS tools? If the answer is yes, you pick ChatGPT Business and you do it on day one. If the answer is no, you pick ChatGPT Team because the simpler admin console is genuinely easier for a small team to run. The 25 dollar per user per month list price is identical, so the choice is not financial. The pattern that falls out: Business pays for itself the moment your headcount, identity provider posture, or compliance obligations make SSO and SCIM the right default. Below that line, Team is the honest answer. Above that line, Team is a hidden cost masquerading as a 25 dollar per user per month price tag.

SCIM provisioning in real practice

SCIM provisioning is the operational feature that quietly justifies the entire Business tier for any organization with a real IT function. With SCIM enabled, your identity provider (Okta, Azure AD, Google Workspace, OneLogin, JumpCloud) becomes the source of truth for who has a ChatGPT Business seat. Adding a new hire to the correct group provisions their ChatGPT seat in minutes with no admin intervention. Removing a departing employee from the identity provider deactivates their ChatGPT access the same hour. This is not a nice to have. This is the difference between an account inventory you can audit and an account inventory full of forgotten ghosts. ChatGPT Team requires admins to add and remove users manually through the workspace console, which works fine for tiny teams and breaks down quickly above 25 seats.

Audit logs and custom retention

ChatGPT Business produces audit logs for admin actions, member additions and removals, workspace setting changes, and login events. These logs are the evidence layer for any compliance program that touches ChatGPT, whether that is SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA on the Enterprise tier, or internal policy review. Custom data retention lets you set the conversation retention window to match your organization records policy, including shorter retention for privacy-conscious workspaces and longer retention for evidence preservation. ChatGPT Team uses the standard retention window with no admin-facing control. For any organization with a real records policy, the retention difference alone is reason to pick Business at the same 25 dollar price point.

When neither is enough: Enterprise

ChatGPT Enterprise is the right answer above roughly 150 seats, or any time you need negotiated security and compliance terms that Business does not include at the standard price. Enterprise adds expanded context windows on supported models, custom data residency in available regions, custom service level agreements, dedicated account support, and the option to negotiate a HIPAA business associate agreement and other contract-level commitments. Enterprise pricing is custom and quoted per workspace based on seat count, expected usage, and required terms. The transition point from Business to Enterprise is usually a combination of headcount, security review depth, and the procurement process at the customer side. If you are still small enough to buy on a credit card, Business is the right tier. If you have a vendor security review process and a procurement contact, Enterprise is the right conversation.

The verdict: Team vs Business

I recommend ChatGPT Business at 25 dollars per user per month for every workspace that already has an identity provider deployed or that expects to deploy one within 12 months. The list price is identical to Team, the security delta is significant, and the operational overhead of SCIM provisioning beats manual account management at any scale above 25 seats. I recommend ChatGPT Team at the same 25 dollars per user per month for tiny workspaces under 25 seats with no identity provider, no compliance obligations, and no near-term IT review on the horizon. The Team admin console is genuinely simpler to operate at that size, and the absence of SSO is not a limitation when the entire workspace is six trusted people. Above 150 seats or for negotiated contract terms, skip both and go straight to Enterprise. The pricing identity between Team and Business is unusual in SaaS, and it is the most honest version of OpenAI saying that the only real difference is the security tier you have outgrown or not yet grown into.
