Formerly Windsurf

Devin Desktop is the IDE that used to be called Windsurf. Cognition, which acquired Windsurf, renamed it on June 2, 2026, through an over-the-air update. Cognition's FAQ says it is the same IDE with the same features, and that existing plans and pricing did not change with the rename. Today windsurf.com/pricing redirects to devin.ai/pricing, so the table below describes the current public offer; legacy subscribers should check their account-specific terms. Legacy plan holders can still manage settings at windsurf.com, according to the Devin Desktop FAQ .

One practical note: older articles describe "prompt credits" and "flow action credits". The current Devin pricing page describes usage quotas instead, so credit counts quoted elsewhere are probably out of date.

How Devin pricing actually works

Every paid Devin plan comes with a usage allowance that refreshes automatically on a daily and weekly basis, according to the official FAQ. There is no single monthly bucket to drain on day one. A heavy Tuesday uses that day's room, and the weekly limit stops one big week from taking everything.

The cost of each agent message is not fixed. The FAQ says it varies with:

  • the model you choose
  • the size and complexity of the task
  • the reasoning the model needs

Two things do not touch your quota on any plan: Tab completions and inline edits in Devin Desktop are listed as unlimited, including on Free .

What eats quota fastest

  • Frontier models on simple tasks. Using the largest reasoning model to rename a variable is the quickest way to hit your limit.
  • Huge context. Pasting whole files or logs when a single function would do.
  • Long autonomous runs. Devin Cloud sessions that plan, code and test across many steps.
  • Parallel sessions. Running several agents at once multiplies usage.

What happens when you hit the limit

The official answer: most users never reach their limits, and if you do on a paid plan, you can buy extra usage, consumed at API pricing. That means overage tracks the underlying model providers' list prices rather than a Devin-specific rate . Otherwise, you wait for the daily or weekly refresh.

What a real project costs on Devin

These are illustrative estimates based on published plan limits. Devin does not publish quota sizes as numbers, so we cannot calculate how many messages a plan buys.

Scenario A: a weekend side project. You are building a small CLI tool or landing page, mostly typing code yourself with Tab completion and a few agent requests. Free covers unlimited Tab and inline edits, so your cost can be $0 . If the light agent quota runs dry on Saturday, one month of Pro is $20 .

Scenario B: a month building an MVP with auth and a database. You use the agent daily for scaffolding, migrations and debugging. Pro at $20/month is the realistic baseline. If you keep hitting the daily cap, your options are extra usage at API pricing or Max at $200/month . Max costs ten times Pro , so try smaller models and tighter prompts first, and only upgrade once your overage bills approach that gap.

Scenario C: a five-developer team. On Teams, five full dev seats cost $80 + (5 × $40) = $280/month . Five separate Pro accounts would be 5 × $20 = $100/month . The extra $180 buys sharing, centralized billing, an admin dashboard with analytics and priority support. The team fee is fixed, so the per-developer gap shrinks as the team grows. Confirm which seat types your team needs before ordering; this illustration prices five full developer seats only.

Devin Free plan: what you get and the real limits

The Free plan lists :

  • a light quota to code with agents
  • limited model availability
  • unlimited inline edits
  • unlimited Tab completions

The real limits are the agent quota and model access. Free is genuinely useful as an AI-assisted editor, because autocomplete is the feature many developers use most. It is weak for agent-driven work, which is what most people now pay Devin for. Free also lacks Devin Cloud and full model availability.

Hidden or extra costs

  • Extra usage at API pricing. The main variable cost. Overage follows model list prices, so premium reasoning models cost far more per task than small ones.
  • Team base fee. Teams carries a fixed monthly fee on top of seats .
  • Devin Cloud for organizations. The Devin Desktop FAQ notes Devin Cloud is a separate SKU for some enterprise setups. Check with sales if you need it at scale.
  • Your own infrastructure. Devin writes code; hosting, databases and deployments are billed by whatever providers you use.
  • Taxes. Check the official page and checkout for tax treatment in your country.

Is Devin worth it? Who should pay, who should not

Pay for Pro if you are a developer who works in an IDE every day and wants agents, frontier models and unlimited autocomplete in one place. For professional developers, an AI IDE like Devin Desktop or Cursor is usually a better fit than a chat-first app builder, and we would rather say so plainly.

Consider Max only if you hit Pro's quota most days and your overage at API pricing regularly costs more than the difference between the two plans.

Skip it if you do not write code. Devin assumes you can read diffs, run a terminal and manage a repository. Non-coders get more from a browser builder.

To evaluate a prompt-first app workflow, try the Lovable prompt library with a small, independently checkable task.

Devin and Cursor compete for the same developer, and both now pair a subscription with a usage allowance and paid overage. Plan prices move often, so compare current tiers side by side on our Cursor pricing page and the Lovable vs Cursor comparison rather than trusting a number from last quarter.

If you are not a developer, Lovable is the more natural choice, because it builds and hosts web apps from chat. Browse more options in our Lovable alternatives list.

How to save money on Devin

  1. Use small models for routine work. The official FAQ names mini models such as Haiku, GPT 5.2 Mini and Kimi K2.5 as ways to extend usage. Save frontier models for hard problems.
  2. Trim context. The same FAQ advises precise instructions with unnecessary context removed.
  3. Lean on unlimited Tab. Autocomplete and inline edits are unlimited, so use them for small edits instead of agent requests.
  4. Watch the weekly refresh. If you are near the weekly limit, schedule big agent tasks for after the reset rather than buying extra usage.
  5. Prototype on Free. Test whether Devin Desktop suits you before paying.

Prompts that stretch your Devin quota

1. File-scoped refactor

In src/utils/date.ts only, replace moment.js calls with date-fns.
Keep function signatures identical. Do not touch tests or other files.
List each function you changed.

2. Read-only investigation

Without editing code, explain why getUserOrders() in
services/orders.ts runs one query per order. Point to the exact lines
and suggest a single-query approach in under 100 words.

3. Test-first request

Write one failing unit test for the bug where discount codes apply
twice at checkout. Stop after the test. I will review it before you fix.

Each prompt sets a clear stopping point, which is what keeps agent runs short. For more, see our guide to learning Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf) and prompt engineering in Devin Desktop.

FAQ

How much does Devin cost?

Devin is free to start. Pro is $20/month, Max is $200/month, and Teams is $80/month plus $40 per full dev seat . Enterprise pricing is through sales.

Is Devin free?

Yes. The Free plan includes unlimited Tab completions and inline edits in Devin Desktop, a light agent quota and limited model availability.

How do Devin usage quotas work?

Paid plans include a usage quota that refreshes daily and weekly. The cost of each message depends on the model, task size and reasoning. Extra usage is sold at API pricing. Older "prompt credits" no longer appear on the pricing page.

Is Devin cheaper than Cursor?

It depends on the tiers you compare and your usage. Both change prices often, so compare current Devin plans with our Cursor pricing page on the same day.

What is the Devin Max plan?

Max is for power users. It includes everything in Pro plus significantly higher quotas, at $200/month .

Is Devin the same as Windsurf?

Devin Desktop is Windsurf under a new name. Cognition renamed the Windsurf IDE on June 2, 2026, and said it is the same IDE with unchanged plans. Windsurf pricing now lives on the Devin pricing page.
