How Replit pricing actually works

Replit has two layers of AI usage, and understanding them is the key to predicting your bill.

Layer 1: Free Mode. Paid plans include a set amount of Free Mode usage. On Core that is listed as up to 30 hours of chat and up to 60 projects . Free Mode runs on models Replit covers inside the subscription.

Layer 2: dollar credits for stronger models. Core includes $20 toward more powerful models; Pro includes $100 toward the most powerful ones . When you ask Agent to use a premium model, the cost comes out of this balance.

Beyond your included credits, Replit uses what it calls Effort-Based Pricing, a pay-as-you-go model. Instead of a fixed price per message, the cost of each Agent request scales with how much work it does. A small fix is cheap. Building a full feature with many files and tests costs more.

What eats Replit credits fastest

  • Big, open-ended Agent tasks. "Build me a CRM" makes Agent plan, write, run and fix code across many steps.
  • Premium models for routine work. Using the strongest model for a typo fix spends dollar credits that Free Mode could have covered.
  • Agent debugging loops. When Agent tests, fails and retries, each round adds effort.
  • Always-on deployments. Hosting and compute for published apps can draw on your usage too .

What happens when you run out

Replit's FAQ covers "What happens when I run out of credits?" and "How can I control what I spend on Replit?" . In general, once included credits are gone, further premium usage is billed pay-as-you-go or you move to a higher plan or credit tier. Set a spending limit in your account before starting a big Agent session.

What a real project costs

These are illustrative estimates based on published plan limits. Agent cost varies with task size, so treat these as planning ranges, not quotes.

Scenario A: a weekend prototype. A to-do app or simple internal form, built mostly in Free Mode. Core starts at $20, but whether the included Free Mode and credits cover the project depends on actual usage. If you only build occasionally, compare this with the free tier on the official page before paying.

Scenario B: an MVP with auth and a database over a month. You will lean on Agent for setup, schema changes and bug fixes. Start on Core and watch the usage meter in week one. If you are using premium models daily, you may spend the $20 credit early and start paying effort-based overage. At that point, compare the overage with Pro: $100/month includes $100 of credits, so Pro's subscription price is essentially prepaid usage plus premium support and database rollback up to 28 days.

Scenario C: a small team building internal tools. Pro allows up to 15 collaborators . A team sharing one Pro workspace on annual billing pays $90 × 12 = $1,080/year , compared with $100 × 12 = $1,200 monthly. If the team needs more credits, the the next displayed Pro tier is $225 on monthly billing or $215/month equivalent with annual billing. Teams needing SSO or audit logs must talk to sales about Enterprise.

Free plan: what you get and the real limits

Replit's pricing page currently leads with Core, Pro and Enterprise. Its official Starter documentation still lists a free plan: daily Agent credits subject to a monthly cap, monthly cloud credits and one published app that expires after 30 days. The public documents do not specify a universal dollar value for the daily Agent grant.

The practical limit of any free tier on Replit is Agent access. The platform's value is Agent building apps for you, and that is exactly what free tiers restrict most.

Hidden or extra costs

  • Effort-based overage. The main variable cost. Large Agent tasks can cost more than you expect from the sticker price.
  • Deployments and hosting. Running a published app uses compute; check how deployment costs are billed for your plan .
  • Database storage. Bigger databases and longer retention can add cost; Pro lists database rollback up to 28 days .
  • Custom domains. Registering the domain is a separate purchase.
  • Higher credit tiers. Pro's monthly price rises with the credit tier you choose.
  • Taxes. Applied based on location.

Is Replit worth it? Who should pay, who should not

Pay for Core if you want a browser IDE with an AI agent, hosting and databases in one place, and you are happy to read and edit code. At $18/month annual , it is one of the lower starting prices among the app builders compared here.

Move to Pro if you are building commercially, need collaborators, or keep spending past Core's included credits. Because Pro includes credits roughly equal to its price, heavy users lose little by upgrading.

Think twice if you want a fixed, predictable bill. Effort-based pricing is fair, but you cannot know a task's cost until Agent finishes it.

On monthly billing, Core at $20 is $5 below the $25 starting prices of Lovable Pro and Bolt Pro. On annual billing, Replit Core and Bolt Pro both show $18/month equivalents; Lovable starts at $250/year. These are subscription comparisons, not estimates of completed app costs.

Cursor is a different product, a local code editor for developers, so compare it with Replit only if you plan to write most code yourself. See our Cursor pricing breakdown, the Lovable vs Replit comparison , and the broader Lovable alternatives list.

How to save money on Replit

  1. Pay annually after a trial month. Core drops from $20 to $18 and Pro from $100 to $90 per month , about 10% off.
  2. Stay in Free Mode for routine work. Switch to premium models only for problems Free Mode cannot solve.
  3. Break big asks into steps. Several small Agent tasks are easier to control and stop than one giant request.
  4. Set a spend limit. Use Replit's spend controls before long sessions.
  5. Downgrade between projects. If nothing is in active development, drop to the lowest tier you need.

Prompts that cut Replit Agent effort

Effort-based pricing rewards precise requests. Try these:

1. Bounded task

Add a /health endpoint to server.js that returns {"status":"ok"}.
Do not install new packages. Do not change other routes.
Stop after the endpoint works and show me the test you ran.

2. Diagnose before fixing

The signup form returns a 500 error. Read the server logs and tell me
the cause in two sentences. Do not edit any files yet.

3. Stepwise build plan

I want user accounts with email login and a profile page.
Break this into 3 to 5 small tasks I can approve one at a time.
Start with task 1 only.

Prompt 2 is the biggest saver: a cheap diagnosis stops Agent from trying fixes at random. For a full set, see our Replit Agent prompts library and the guide to vibe coding on Replit.
