Getting Hired on Mercor: Applications, the AI Interview and Assessments
Most frustration with Mercor happens before the first project: applications that sit on Submitted, AI interviews that cut people off, and rejections with no reason given. This page explains how selection works according to Mercor's own documentation, and what you can actually do at each step.

01 · Getting selected
Getting selected for your first project
Selection depends on the client's needs at that moment, not only on your qualifications. Mercor matches profiles using your résumé, interview transcript, assessments, skills, location and availability, so the controllable part is making each of those complete and accurate.
How can I land my first Mercor project?
Work through the levers Mercor documents: upload a current, text-based PDF résumé, add your location, work authorization and availability, take the recommended assessments on the Assessments page, and turn on email and app notifications so you see time-sensitive offers. Then apply to listings that match your background, quickly, because listings close as they fill. Mercor's dashboard shows a Get instant work offers bar listing what is still missing from your profile.

How should I tailor my resume for specialist roles?
Mercor's AI parses your résumé to match you to roles, and its interviewer generates questions from your résumé and the job description, so precision helps twice. Use a 1 to 2 page, text-based PDF under 2 MB with standard headings (Education, Experience, Skills, Certifications) and no images or tables. Name the specific tools, methods and credentials a specialist role asks for, and quantify achievements. Everything on it should be something you can discuss in depth in the interview.

Are older open listings still accepting applicants?
If the Apply button is active, the listing is accepting applications. When a role stops accepting, the button is disabled and replaced with no longer accepting applications. Roles show a Closing Soon badge at about 90% capacity, and you can subscribe to reopening notifications on closed roles. An old listing that is still open is worth applying to, but expect competition from earlier applicants.

Should I apply when I meet only some of the requirements?
Apply when you meet the core requirement and most of the rest. Mercor says roles that require proven domain expertise state it in the description and are evaluated against it, so a missing hard requirement (a licence, a degree, a language) is usually decisive. Missing a nice-to-have is less likely to matter. Applying costs only time, and assessments you complete are reused for other roles, so a near miss is not wasted.
Source: Mercor Docs: Apply for a Job; Mercor Docs: Assessments
Why am I rejected despite relevant experience and a good interview?
Because selection also depends on factors outside your profile. Mercor lists client needs, project scope, capacity and compliance requirements, and notes that the same assessment can be weighted differently for different roles. A role can fill before your application is reviewed. Mercor does not share specific feedback, so the practical response is to keep applying to matched roles and add relevant assessments rather than reading too much into one rejection.

Do keywords affect whether my application is selected?
Indirectly, yes. Mercor says companies find talent through AI search with queries such as React engineers with Node.js, and its AI reads your résumé, interview transcript and public profiles to judge match quality. Clear, specific skill terms help the system understand what you do. Keyword stuffing does not help, because the interview will probe whatever you claim.
How many applications does it take to get a first project?
Mercor does not publish a figure, and experiences on Reddit range from a first-week offer to dozens of rejections. Because completed assessments are reused and passing recommended ones can get you considered without applying, the number of assessments you complete well may matter more than the number of applications. Prioritise listings where you clearly meet the requirements.

How do I get an instant offer?
Instant offers come from Mercor's matching system. You are marked prequalified when your match score, availability and completed requirements (résumé, verified interviews and skills) fit a role, or when a hiring team member finds your profile in a search. Mercor's checklist is: keep your résumé, location and work authorization current, tag current skills, set accurate availability, finish pending assessments, enable notifications, and respond before offer deadlines.

Could my location be the reason for rejection?
Yes. Mercor says a listing that names a region only accepts candidates from that region, and a listing with no location is assumed to be open to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the European Union by default. Mercor also cannot onboard anyone in a country missing from its supported-countries list. Check the listing's location before applying.

Are rejection emails actual decisions or application timeouts?
Mercor says you are emailed once a final decision is made, so a rejection email is a decision on that application. It applies to that listing only and does not bar you from others. Separately, if a listing closes while your application is still in progress, you may not be able to finish it, and that is a closure rather than a rejection.

Why am I rejected for roles similar to projects I already work on?
Similar is not identical. Each listing has its own client, capacity and scoring: Mercor notes that even listings using the same assessment can score and weight it differently. A role may also already be full, or require a different location or language. Being active on one project does not move you to another automatically, so continue to apply.

Is it normal for applications to remain pending for nearly a year?
Mercor says submitted applications cannot be withdrawn and stay under review until the hiring team finishes, then usually disappear from the dashboard within a few weeks. An application still pending after many months is very unlikely to progress. There is nothing to cancel; keep applying to current listings.
Source: Mercor Docs: Apply for a Job
When should I stop applying after repeated rejections?
There is no limit on applications. Instead of stopping, change something: check whether your target listings specify a location or credential you lack, take new assessments in your strongest domain, and consider a retake only if an interview genuinely went wrong (you get three, and hiring managers see the count). If nothing matches after that, pause and check back as new listings appear.

What does an application stuck on Submitted mean?
It means every step is complete and the application is waiting for the hiring team. The Applications section of your dashboard shows each application as Ready to submit or Submitted. Mercor says you are notified when an application moves to the next stage and recommends applying to other roles while you wait.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview; Mercor Docs: Apply for a Job
How long does review take after an interview?
Mercor does not publish a fixed timeline. It says you are notified when your application moves to the next stage, and that timelines depend on the role's urgency, application volume and candidate quality. Keep applying to other roles in the meantime.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview; Mercor Docs: Referral Policy and FAQs
Does Mercor notify applicants when they are rejected?
Yes. Mercor's documentation says applications stay under review until the hiring team completes its process and that you are notified by email once a final decision is made. It does not include specific feedback on the reason.
Source: Mercor Docs: Apply for a Job
Is an application pending for six weeks effectively a rejection?
Not officially, since Mercor emails final decisions, but it is a weak signal. Many roles fill within days. Treat a six-week wait as not progressing for now, and keep applying rather than waiting on it.
Source: Mercor Docs: Apply for a Job
Why did instant offers stop after my first short project?
Instant offers only go out when a role uses them and your profile closely matches it, and Mercor notes not every role does. Matching also considers your performance in earlier interviews and assessments. Keep availability current, since an outdated start date or weekly hours can take you out of matching, and keep applying manually as Mercor recommends.
Source: Mercor Docs: Instant Work Offers
Why am I marked a top applicant for a role unrelated to my background?
Prequalification is automated, based on match scores and completed requirements, so it can misfire when a role's assessment overlaps with one you passed. Read the listing's actual requirements before applying, and if your skills tags are broad, tighten them so matches reflect what you do.

02 · The AI interview
The Mercor AI interview
The AI interview is Mercor's only screening method; it does not offer human, chat or phone interviews instead. It is recorded, transcribed and evaluated, and the same result is reused for any application that needs that interview.
What questions does Mercor's AI interviewer ask?
Mercor says its AI interviewer generates role-specific questions from your résumé and the job description. Some interviews are technical and go deep into your prior experience; others test language or reasoning. Most take about 20 minutes, some include a whiteboard that saves automatically, and some require screen sharing. Mercor asks candidates not to share specific questions publicly, so treat any leaked question list with caution.

How soon after interviewing can I receive a project?
There is no set gap. An interview finishes one step; the hiring team decides when to make offers. Some people receive instant offers soon after completing a relevant interview because the result immediately prequalifies them, while others wait. You are notified when an application moves forward.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview; Mercor Docs: Instant Work Offers
Can I retake an interview after a failed attempt?
Yes, up to three times across all applications that use that interview. Open the Assessments tab, click Retake assessment on the completed interview card, choose a reason (Technical issue, Interrupted, Just testing, Improve performance, Other, or Different domain or language) and confirm. Retaking resets your application progress, and only your most recent attempt is evaluated.

Why does screen sharing fail when my computer says it is working?
The most common cause is sharing a window or tab: Mercor only supports full-screen sharing. Use the latest Chrome (Edge and Safari are supported; Firefox and mobile browsers are not), allow camera and microphone in the site permissions, then select Restart devices. On a Mac, your browser also needs Screen Recording permission in System Settings. A hall-of-mirrors effect during sharing is normal.

How can I answer experience questions without breaching another client's NDA?
Describe the type of work, your role, the skills used and the scale or impact, without naming the client, data, internal tools, prompts or metrics. This is the same standard Mercor applies to describing Mercor projects on a résumé. For example: built evaluation rubrics for a large language model in a regulated domain, rather than naming the company or the model.

How do I handle the interviewer interrupting or repeating questions?
Mercor's guidance is to keep answers concise and avoid long pauses, because extended silence can trigger the AI to jump in. If it interrupts, tell it you were not finished. If you did not catch a question, ask it to repeat or clarify. Headphones and an external microphone help it hear you properly; if audio problems persist, exit and retake from your dashboard.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview
How can I prepare to pass the AI video interview?
Take Mercor's free practice interview first; it is unlimited and never shared with companies. Then prepare to discuss every line of your résumé in depth, since questions are generated from it. On the day, use desktop Chrome with a working camera and microphone, sit in a quiet, well-lit room with your face fully visible, keep pen, paper and a calculator nearby, and complete the setup checks in the waiting room.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview
How do I get comfortable speaking to an AI instead of a person?
Practise with the free practice interview, which you can take as many times as you like without affecting opportunities. Captions are on by default. Treat it like a structured phone screen: answer in short, organised points, and do not be afraid to say you are not finished or to ask it to repeat a question.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview
Why is there no retake option for my interview?
Retake assessment appears on the interview card only once the interview is completed. Refresh the dashboard. If you have used all three retakes, the page shows No retakes left instead. If the option is missing for another reason, email [email protected] with the interview name and a short description.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview
Can I still get an offer after an interview I thought went badly?
Yes. Candidates are often harsher on themselves than the evaluation is, and decisions combine several factors, including assessments and client needs. If something concrete went wrong, such as a technical failure or interruption, a retake with that reason is reasonable. Remember that only the most recent attempt counts, so a retake replaces the earlier result even if it goes worse.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview; Mercor Docs: Apply for a Job
Should I prepare for resume questions or a domain knowledge quiz?
Both, depending on the role. Mercor says some interviews are technical and go deep into your prior experience, while others test language or reasoning skills. Prepare to explain your résumé in detail and to reason through core concepts in your field out loud.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview
How can I retake the Domain Expert interview when it is missing from Assessments?
The Retake assessment button only shows on a completed interview card, so first confirm the interview shows Completed under its name. An attempt that ended too early shows Interview too short and offers Retake now instead. If it still does not appear after refreshing, email [email protected] with the interview name.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview; Mercor Docs: Apply for a Job
Can retaking an interview hurt my chances?
It can. Hiring managers can see your retake count, the waiting room asks you to reserve retakes for technical issues, and only the most recent attempt is evaluated, so a weaker retake replaces a stronger first attempt. Retake when something genuinely went wrong, not as routine practice; use the practice interview for that.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview; Mercor Docs: Apply for a Job
What should I do when the interview bot stops responding?
Mercor's steps: wait 30 to 60 seconds, then refresh and rejoin; use the latest Chrome; check your connection; clear cache and cookies; and disable VPNs, ad blockers and privacy extensions (try an Incognito window). If it still fails, email [email protected] with your operating system and browser version, the interview and application name, and screenshots.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview
Should I retake a broken interview marked completed?
Yes, if the technical problem affected your answers. Retake it from the Assessments tab, choose Technical issue and describe what happened, and also email [email protected] with a screenshot or recording. Note that a retake counts toward your limit of three.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview
Why does the AI move on before I finish answering?
Long pauses are the usual trigger: Mercor warns that extended silences may cause the AI to interject. Think briefly, then speak continuously in shorter chunks. If it cuts in, tell it you were not finished and continue.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview
Will rambling or going over time hurt my interview result?
Mercor advises answering clearly and succinctly. Long, unfocused answers make it harder for the evaluation to find the substance, and they eat into the time for later questions. Lead with the direct answer, add one concrete example, and stop.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview
Is an interview ending after eight minutes normal?
Length varies: most interviews take about 20 minutes, but some are shorter. What matters is the status. If an attempt ends much earlier than its planned length, Mercor does not count it and the page shows Interview too short, with a Retake now option. If it shows Completed, the short length was accepted.
03 · Assessments and trials
Assessments and paid work trials
Assessments are now a main entry point to Mercor: passing a recommended one can get you considered for roles without applying. Most allow a single submission, so read the instructions fully before you start.
Does Mercor provide assessment results?
Generally no. Mercor Support does not provide assessment scores, detailed results or individual feedback. Some assessments have feedback enabled; when they do, the submission email includes a feedback link, and it also appears in your Assessments tab. No link means no feedback for that assessment.
Source: Mercor Docs: Assessments
How do I know whether I passed a retaken assessment?
Mercor does not send a pass or fail notice for most assessments. The signal is what follows: Mercor says strong results make you visible for more opportunities that use the same assessment, so offers and applications moving forward are the practical indicator.
Source: Mercor Docs: Assessments
Does Mercor provide feedback on my video assessment?
Not on AI interviews: Mercor does not share interview recordings or transcripts and does not give individual feedback on interview rejections. Feedback exists only for assessments where it is enabled, delivered through the submission email and the Assessments tab.
Source: Mercor Docs: AI Interview; Mercor Docs: Apply for a Job; Mercor Docs: Assessments
When should I expect assessment feedback?
If an assessment has feedback enabled, it is delivered automatically after you submit, via a link in the submission email and in the Assessments tab. If neither shows a link, feedback is not available for that assessment, and support cannot provide it.
Source: Mercor Docs: Assessments
Does retaking assessments lead to more or better offers?
Only if the retake is better, because only your most recent attempt is considered. Most assessments allow a single submission anyway; AI interviews allow up to three retakes and forms only when the form allows it. Completing new assessments in your domain usually does more for your visibility than repeating old ones.
Source: Mercor Docs: Assessments; Mercor Docs: Apply for a Job; Mercor Docs: AI Interview
How can I decide which assessments to redo if scores are hidden?
Without scores, use evidence: retake interviews where something concrete went wrong (technical failure, interruption, wrong language) and leave the rest. Put the remaining effort into recommended assessments you have not yet taken, since those are chosen from your résumé and active opportunities.
Will failing one project assessment reduce future offers?
It mainly affects roles that use that same assessment. Mercor says assessment performance affects future opportunities and that strong results make you visible for roles using that assessment; other assessments are evaluated separately. One weak result does not bar you from roles that use different assessments.
Source: Mercor Docs: Assessments; Mercor Docs: Instant Work Offers
How often do image-comparison projects become available?
Mercor does not publish a schedule for any project type. Availability follows client demand. To catch them, keep relevant assessments completed, watch the Recommended Assessments area (new relevant assessments can appear automatically), and subscribe to reopening notifications on closed listings.
Source: Mercor Docs: Assessments; Mercor Docs: Referral Policy and FAQs
What should I do when trial instructions omit the meaning of the rating scale?
Ask before you submit. Request clarification through the channel your project or trial instructions name, or email [email protected] with the listing link, and keep a note of the interpretation you used if you must proceed. Mercor will not coach answers during an assessment, but clarifying ambiguous instructions is a different request.
Why was a work trial available without an email notification?
Work trials appear in the Offers tab and under Important Tasks on your dashboard, so the dashboard is the reliable place to check. Make sure email and app notifications are on, and check spam. Spots on trials are limited and fill according to each project's needs, so check the dashboard regularly.
Source: Mercor Docs: Work Trials; Mercor Docs: Instant Work Offers
Is a low-paid trial worth complicated preparation?
Judge it by what it unlocks, not only by its fixed fee. A trial is the gate to the project, so compare the preparation time with the hourly rate and likely length of the project behind it. If the project rate is low too, it may not be worth it. Note that only completed trials get paid, and no individual feedback is given.
Source: Mercor Docs: Work Trials
Does receiving trial payment mean I passed and will get an offer?
No. Mercor pays the trial fee once your submission is reviewed, typically within 14 business days, and the project lead's decision is separate. Mercor does not provide individual feedback on trial performance, so wait for an offer or status change rather than reading the payment as a pass.
Source: Mercor Docs: Work Trials
Why is my completed assessment missing from my account after technical failures?
An interview that does not meet minimum completion criteria, such as duration, is not marked completed, and autosave is not guaranteed in every case. Email [email protected] with the assessment name, screenshots and what happened. For long written answers, keep your own backup while you work.
Can Mercor reject me and then invite me to the same project?
Yes, it happens. Instant offers come from the matching system or from a hiring team searching profiles, independently of an earlier application, and project needs change. If the invite appears in your Offers tab or comes from an @mercor.com address, it is genuine and you can accept it.
