Mercor Pay Explained: Rates, Payouts, Referrals and Taxes
Pay is where Mercor is most precisely documented and most often misunderstood. The weekly cycle runs on India Standard Time, the first Stripe payout has a seven-day hold, and rates are fixed once a project starts. This page sets out the rules, then answers the specific payment, referral, country and tax questions people ask.

01 · Rates
Pay rates, caps and hours
Rates are set per role from scope, requirements, evaluation outcomes and budget, then fixed. Weekly caps are a maximum, set by the project. Both appear in your offer, so read them carefully before you sign.
Can I increase my pay rate after joining a project?
No. Mercor says pay rates are fixed once an assignment begins and are not reconsidered or renegotiated during the project, unless official project communications say otherwise. A higher rate usually means a different project or a later offer.
Is my rate locked for the entire contract?
Yes, with one exception. If a project changes its pay structure, for example from hourly to per-task, you receive a contract amendment to accept or reject before a deadline. Completed work is never repriced, and the change applies to the whole project, not to individuals.

Can I negotiate the initial offer rate?
Mercor's documentation does not offer a negotiation route. It says rates are determined by role scope, requirements, evaluation outcomes and budget, and are not open to renegotiation once work begins. You can ask the project team how a rate was set. If the rate does not work for you, declining an instant offer does not affect future opportunities.

How much do Mercor project managers earn?
Mercor does not publish rates by job title; each listing shows its own rate, and you can sort listings by Most pay. For context, Mercor told TechCrunch in October 2025 that its experts earn over $85 per hour on average across all roles. Check current project manager listings on work.mercor.com for real figures.

Can I be offboarded for failing to meet minimum hours?
Weekly caps in Mercor's documentation are maximums, not minimums, but projects can set their own expectations, and Mercor says extended or repeated unavailability may affect task assignments or continued participation. Check your offer letter and onboarding document for any stated commitment, and tell your project lead in advance about planned time off.
Source: Mercor Docs: Project and Onboarding Support FAQ; Mercor Docs: Contracts
How can I meet minimum hours when tasks arrive while I am asleep?
Tell your project lead your time zone and working window, since Mercor says most projects allow flexible schedules and weekly caps are cumulative. Ask whether batches are released on a schedule, and whether time zone is considered for any minimum. Do not log time waiting for tasks; idle time is not payable.
Source: Mercor Docs: Project and Onboarding Support FAQ; Mercor Docs: Time Tracking and Pay Policies
Will finishing tasks faster count against my minimum-hours requirement?
On hourly contracts you are paid for tracked working time, so finishing fast means fewer billed hours. Never pad time to compensate: inflating hours with low or simulated activity is a monitored conduct violation. Tell your project lead you have capacity for more tasks instead.
Source: Mercor Docs: Account Security and Conduct; Mercor Docs: Contracts
Is there a minimum weekly commitment if the offer only states a cap?
A cap is a maximum. If your offer only states a cap, there is no minimum in the offer itself, but read the onboarding document, which can set project expectations, and confirm with your project lead. Mercor recommends sharing your availability through the weekly check-in.
Source: Mercor Docs: Contracts; Mercor Docs: Project and Onboarding Support FAQ
Why does my offer require 15 hours when my dashboard cap is seven?
Only the project lead or Mercor's internal team can set your Insightful hour limit, so a mismatch needs them to fix it. Ask in the project support channel or email [email protected] with a screenshot of the offer. Mercor recommends screenshotting your rate and cap before accepting any offer for exactly this reason.
Source: Mercor Docs: Use Insightful for Time Tracking; Mercor Docs: Project Onboarding
Does a low initial hour cap increase after onboarding or task review?
It can, but not automatically. Mercor says caps are set by project needs, client requirements and your availability, and increases can be requested through the project Slack channel or [email protected], subject to project approval. Do not work past your cap without explicit approval: those hours are not paid.
Should I accept a lower-paid second project as backup?
You are allowed to: Mercor says you can work on multiple hourly contracts if each project lead knows your availability. Whether you should depends on whether you can meet both projects' expectations. Coordinate your hours with each lead, and never track time on two contracts at once.

Is an unusually low offer rate a trial rate, a mistake, or the real pay?
Check the offer header first: it states the contract type, such as Hourly Contract, Work Trial or a deliverable-based contract, which changes how the figure works. Rates are always in US dollars. If it still looks wrong, ask before accepting, because rates are fixed once you start. Declining an instant offer does not hurt future chances.
Source: Mercor Docs: Project Onboarding; Mercor Docs: Work Trials; Mercor Docs: Payments; Mercor Docs: Instant Work Offers
Is a pay-per-task offer financially worthwhile?
Work out the effective hourly rate: the task rate divided by the realistic time per task, including reading guidelines, revisions and failed reviews, not your fastest time. On deliverable-based contracts Mercor pays only when all assigned deliverables are submitted and approved, with no minimum hourly guarantee, so factor in rejection risk.
Source: Mercor Docs: Contracts
Are preparation, upload, and guideline-reading time paid on recording tasks?
It depends on the contract type. On hourly contracts, tracked project work is paid, including required trainings and meetings. On per-task contracts you are paid per completed task, so preparation is folded into the task rate. Check the contract terms and ask the project lead if it is unclear.
Source: Mercor Docs: Time Tracking and Pay Policies; Mercor Docs: Contracts
Is pay based on the whole recording or only accepted portions?
That is set in each contract's terms, so check yours. Mercor's general rule for deliverable-based contracts is that payment follows submission and approval of the deliverables. Ask your project lead in writing how partially accepted recordings are paid before you start.

02 · Payouts
Payments, Stripe, Wise and bonuses
Most missing-payment reports come from three causes: the seven-day first-payout hold, the India Standard Time cut-off, and bank or Stripe setup problems. Mercor documents a fix for each.
How do Mercor payouts normally work?
Mercor releases hourly pay every Wednesday around 12:00 PM PST for the previous week, Saturday 12:00 AM to Friday 11:59 PM IST. Your payout goes to Stripe Express (or Wise in unsupported Stripe countries) and then to your bank. Stripe Standard payout is free and takes up to five business days; Instant Payout costs a 1% fee and arrives in about 30 minutes where your bank supports it.
Source: Mercor Docs: Payments; Mercor Docs: Time Tracking and Pay Policies
Why can the first payment take longer?
Stripe places a seven-day holding period on your first payout, and Mercor cannot override it. After that, payouts follow the normal Wednesday schedule.
Source: Mercor Docs: Payments; Stripe Support: Waiting on your first Stripe payout
What time does Mercor initiate weekly payments?
Around 12:00 PM PST (3:00 PM EST) on Wednesday. Mercor's Payments page includes a calculator that converts the IST cut-offs and release times into your time zone.
Source: Mercor Docs: Payments; Mercor Docs: Referral Policy and FAQs
What should I do when Stripe says paid but my bank cannot locate the transfer?
Open the payout in your Stripe Express dashboard and give your bank the payout trace ID, which Stripe issues once the payout is marked Paid. Mercor says banks can take up to five to ten business days to show funds after Paid. If it is still missing after that, contact your bank with the Stripe details.
Source: Mercor Docs: Payments; Mercor Docs: Time Tracking and Pay Policies
Why did Stripe change a payment from succeeded to failed?
Usually your bank rejected it, most often because of wrong account details or a name that does not match your legal name. Mercor says a rejected transfer can take eight to twelve business days to show as failed, the money returns to your Stripe balance, and Stripe retries automatically once you correct your details, with 10 to 15 business days before it lands.

Is anyone else experiencing a delayed UK payment?
Mercor does not publish country-specific delays. UK payouts run through Stripe like most countries, which Mercor says takes two to three business days after release, or up to five around holidays. Check the payout status and expected arrival date in your Stripe Express dashboard before contacting support.
Source: Mercor Docs: Payments
Why is my usual Stripe instant payout delayed?
Instant Payout only works where Stripe supports instant transfers to your bank, and a Stripe hold on your account stops payouts entirely. Mercor says holds are placed by Stripe and only Stripe can lift them: log in to Stripe, complete any pending actions, and contact Stripe Support if it continues.
Source: Mercor Docs: Payments; Mercor Docs: Time Tracking and Pay Policies
Should I receive an email when payment is initiated or completed?
On Wise, yes: Wise emails you after each release and you must accept the transfer for it to move. On Stripe, payouts are automatic, so use the Stripe Express dashboard and your Mercor Earnings page to track status rather than waiting for an email.
Source: Mercor Docs: Payments
Is a first payment showing pending normal?
Yes. Stripe holds the first payout for seven days, so it can show pending during that period. Payouts after the first follow the weekly schedule.
Source: Mercor Docs: Payments; Mercor Docs: Time Tracking and Pay Policies
What can I do when my work-trial payout misses the promised window?
Mercor says trial payment is typically processed within 14 business days after your submission is reviewed, then takes three to seven business days to arrive once it shows Paid. If you hear nothing after 14 business days, email [email protected] with the trial name and listing link.
Source: Mercor Docs: Work Trials
Why did I not receive my usual payroll receipt?
Mercor does not issue invoices or tax receipts to contractors. Use your Stripe or Wise payout history and the Mercor Earnings page as records. If your tax authority needs invoices, create your own using Mercor's legal details: Mercor.io Corporation, 181 Fremont St, 33rd floor, San Francisco, CA 94105, EIN 88-1741971.

Will an earned bonus still be paid after offboarding?
Mercor says all approved and verified work completed before termination is paid. Bonuses also need explicit approval logged in Mercor's system; a verbal approval is not enough. If the bonus was logged before you left, it should arrive in the next Wednesday or Friday release window. Bonuses can be withheld where a policy violation is involved.
Source: Mercor Docs: Project and Onboarding Support FAQ; Mercor Docs: Payments; Mercor Docs: Project Offboarding
How can I track changing bonus offers on a pay-per-task project?
Bonuses are project-specific and announced by the project team, so save each announcement with its date and terms, and check your Earnings page, which lists bonuses separately from contract wages. If an announced bonus is missing after its payout window, ask the project lead to confirm it was logged.
Source: Mercor Docs: Project and Onboarding Support FAQ; Mercor Docs: Payments
Are bonuses being calculated and paid fairly?
Mercor's rule is that bonuses are paid only after eligibility is verified and approval is logged in the system, and are released on Wednesdays or Fridays depending on when they were approved. If your bonus seems wrong, confirm the criteria and that it was logged, then email [email protected].

How do I dispute hours deducted because screen activity was not recorded?
Contact your project lead during the pay period right after the one you are disputing, with context and any supporting evidence. Mercor reviews your dispute, account history and activity, then gives a final decision; duplicate requests are ignored. Mercor notes Insightful needs a stable internet connection, since offline time does not sync.

03 · Referrals
The Mercor referral program
Since January 2026, Mercor referrers earn 20% of a referral's work earnings, including hourly pay and bonuses, up to a cap set by the referral's first accepted offer. Attribution only happens through the referrer's own link, used at sign-up.
Does a referral improve my chances compared with applying directly?
Not for standard referrals. Mercor says every candidate is evaluated on their own qualifications, experience and interview performance, regardless of who referred them. The exception is Fast-Paced Referrals, available only to selected experts on selected roles, where the project team reviews the recommendation first and an approved candidate gets a faster path for that role.
Source: Mercor Docs: Referral Policy and FAQs; Mercor Docs: Refer someone
Is the referral commission deducted from my earnings?
Mercor's published referral policy describes the referrer earning 20% of what the referral earns and does not describe any deduction from the referred person's pay. Your pay is the rate in your own offer. If you want certainty for your situation, ask [email protected] before accepting.
Why did a referral disappear after the person received an instant offer?
Common causes in Mercor's rules: the person did not claim the referral link within the sign-up window (generally seven days, shorter if they had already applied), they were already linked to another referrer, they had previously been offered work by Mercor, or they raised a referral dispute. Email [email protected] with their name, email and your referral link.
When are referral funds deposited?
Referral earnings are released twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays at 12:00 PM PST. You must pass ID verification as a referrer before payouts can be issued, and earnings may show as pending before the next release.
Source: Mercor Docs: Referral Policy and FAQs; Mercor Docs: Complete ID Verification
Has anyone actually been paid through the referral program?
Mercor publishes a full payout schedule, statuses and dispute rules for the program, which is unusual for a scam, and referral payments go through the same Stripe and Wise system as wages. We cannot verify individual payments. The most common reasons people are not paid are documented: the referral was never hired, used a different link, or the referrer did not complete ID verification.
Source: Mercor Docs: Referral Policy and FAQs; Mercor Docs: Complete ID Verification
Could referring someone who performs poorly hurt my standing?
Mercor's documentation does not penalise referrers for a referral's performance; candidates are evaluated independently. What is penalised is abuse, such as self-referral or multiple accounts, which gets both accounts banned. Mercor advises referring people you have worked with and can vouch for, which also protects your credibility if you use its Vouch feature.
Source: Mercor Docs: Referral Policy and FAQs; Mercor Docs: Refer someone
Why has referral pay not been calculated for two weeks?
Referral earnings accrue once the referral is hired and starts billable work, and can show as pending before the next Wednesday or Friday release. Work trials and one-time-payment listings do not count. If nothing appears after the cut-off, email [email protected] with the referral's name and email and your referral link.
Does Referred by M mean someone referred me to a project?
Mercor's documentation does not define that label. It does describe Mercor warm intros, where a LinkedIn connection shares network data and Mercor invites you with a referral link. If you do not recognise your referrer, use Not your referrer? in your profile's Account section to open a dispute. Note that once a dispute is upheld, you cannot be referred by anyone else.
Can I appeal suspension from the referral program?
Mercor says disputes are reviewed by Mercor Support, evidence is required, and outcomes are final under the program rules. Email [email protected] with any evidence you have, such as two-way messages showing you knew the person you referred. Self-referral and multiple accounts lead to bans on both accounts.
Will referral-program suspension affect project selection?
Mercor's documentation does not link a referral suspension to project selection. The exception is multi-accounting, which bans both accounts outright. Referral bans for other reasons are described as affecting referral earnings.
04 · Location and tax
Countries, accounts and taxes
Mercor can only onboard people in countries on its supported list, pays individuals only (no businesses), and withholds no tax. The forms you complete depend on US tax status, not on where you currently live. This is general information from Mercor's documentation, not tax advice.
Does Mercor accept contractors in African countries?
Some. Mercor's supported list for Africa is Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Madagascar, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania and Tunisia. Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Cameroon are among the countries Mercor says it cannot onboard. Ghana is paid through Stripe on the list, though another Mercor page names it among Wise countries, so check during setup.
Source: Mercor Docs: Supported Countries for Payment; Mercor Docs: Time Tracking and Pay Policies
How do contractors receive Mercor payments in Nigeria?
Nigeria is on Mercor's supported list and is paid through Stripe Connect. Contracts are in US dollars and Stripe converts to your local currency at payout. The bank account must be a local account in your own legal name; joint, business or relatives' accounts fail Stripe's checks.
Source: Mercor Docs: Supported Countries for Payment; Mercor Docs: Payments
Are applicants based in India actually getting hired?
India is a supported country, and Mercor maintains a dedicated India guide covering INR payouts through Stripe, income tax and GST, which suggests a meaningful contractor base there. Mercor does not publish hiring rates by country. Note that listings naming another region are not open to India-based applicants.
Source: Mercor Docs: Supported Countries for Payment; Mercor Docs: India Contractor Considerations; Mercor Docs: Referral Policy and FAQs
Can a US citizen living abroad qualify for US-based projects?
Eligibility follows the listing's location requirement and where you are authorised to work from; work authorization asks for your location of residence. If a listing requires US residence, living abroad may disqualify you. For tax, US citizens still complete a W-9 and must select United States in Stripe even when living abroad. Ask [email protected] before applying if unsure.
Source: Mercor Docs: Project Onboarding; Mercor Docs: Referral Policy and FAQs; Mercor Docs: Taxes and Work Authorization
Can I accept an instant offer if I live outside the listed country?
Not without checking. Mercor says listings that specify a region are only open to candidates from that region, and onboarding asks you to confirm your residence and that you are authorised to work from there. Email [email protected] before accepting rather than risking a revoked contract.
Source: Mercor Docs: Referral Policy and FAQs; Mercor Docs: Project Onboarding
How does dual citizenship affect eligibility for US projects?
For tax, US citizenship decides the form: US citizens complete a W-9, others a W-8BEN. For eligibility, what matters is where you live and are authorised to work, which onboarding asks you to confirm. A dual citizen living outside the US may still be outside a US-residence listing. Check the listing and ask support if unsure.
Source: Mercor Docs: Taxes and Work Authorization; Mercor Docs: Project Onboarding
Can a suspension triggered while traveling abroad be reversed?
Often, if the cause was network-related. Since July 17, 2026, Mercor blocks sign-ins through VPNs, proxies and anonymizing services, and logging in through one can pause your contract. When you can restore access, your Home page shows a Verify your network task: turn off any VPN or privacy relay, reconnect to your normal network and click Check my network. Mercor's docs do not address travel itself, so contact [email protected] if the task does not appear.
Will a suspension affect future Mercor opportunities?
It depends on the cause. A network-check pause can be cleared yourself and Mercor says your account, projects and pay are not affected once you connect normally. Suspensions for conduct violations are different: Mercor escalates from payment adjustment to project removal to platform suspension for the most serious cases.
How do I challenge a VPN or proxy flag when I was not using one?
Look for tools that reroute traffic without you noticing: iCloud Private Relay (on by default for many iCloud+ users), VPN apps set to launch at startup, and secure browsing features in antivirus or browser software. Mercor requires a regular residential or mobile connection and grants no individual exceptions. If you still cannot sign in after disabling everything, follow Mercor's 403 Access Forbidden steps or contact support.
Can I change the country selected for tax reporting?
Yes. Update your address in Stripe and keep your W-9 or W-8BEN current. To change your Stripe country, reset your payment setup from the Earnings tab on work.mercor.com (gear icon, Reset). That creates a new Stripe account for future payouts; payments already in transit still arrive. Do not reset while money is in transit.

How do citizenship and residency affect tax obligations?
On Mercor's forms, US citizens and permanent residents complete a W-9 and receive a 1099-NEC through Stripe; everyone else completes a W-8BEN with their actual country of residence and receives no US tax form. Mercor's docs still cite a $600 threshold for the 1099-NEC, but the IRS raised it to $2,000 for payments made after December 31, 2025, so 2026 income below $2,000 may not generate one; it is taxable either way. Mercor withholds no tax. Your local obligations depend on your residency and your country's rules, so Mercor recommends a local accountant.

Does Mercor report contractor income to local tax authorities?
Mercor's documentation describes US reporting only: a 1099-NEC through Stripe for W-9 filers above the IRS threshold (which rose from $600 to $2,000 for payments made after December 31, 2025). For W-8BEN filers it says no US form is issued and that you are responsible for reporting income in your own country. Do not assume income is invisible to your tax authority; keep your Stripe or Wise records and report it.

Is it worth registering a business in Norway for a short, uncertain contract?
Mercor pays individuals only and does not support business-to-business contracts, so a company would not be the contracting party anyway. Whether Norway requires you to register as self-employed depends on Norwegian rules and your income, so ask a Norwegian accountant or the tax administration. Norway is a supported country, paid through Stripe.

What should Canadian contractors enter as their FTIN on Form W-8BEN?
The FTIN field asks for your home country's tax identification number. Canadian residents typically use their Social Insurance Number, which is Canada's individual tax number; Mercor's form also has an FTIN not required option if you do not have one. Confirm with a Canadian accountant if your situation is unusual.
Source: Mercor Docs: UK Contractor Considerations; Mercor Docs: EU Contractor Considerations
What should Canadian contractors enter in the tax-treaty section?
Mercor says the Claim of Tax Treaty Benefits section is optional and most Mercor users leave it blank. Mercor does not withhold US tax from payments either way. If you want to claim treaty benefits under the US-Canada treaty, have an accountant confirm the article and rate first.
Source: Mercor Docs: UK Contractor Considerations; Mercor Docs: EU Contractor Considerations; Mercor Docs: Taxes and Work Authorization
How should I plan for taxes when project income can stop suddenly?
Set aside a fixed share of every payout in a separate account as it arrives, since Mercor withholds nothing and you are responsible for your own tax, including quarterly estimated payments where your country requires them. Keep your Stripe or Wise statements, and get advice from a local accountant on deductible expenses and payment deadlines.
