Is Mercor legitimate?

The short version: Mercor is a real company with verifiable funding, published policies and a weekly payout system. Most of the distrust online comes from the parts of the process that feel opaque, such as AI interviews, silent rejections and sensitive data requests, so those are answered here one by one.

Is Mercor a legitimate platform that actually pays contractors?

Yes. Mercor raised a $350 million Series C at a $10 billion valuation in October 2025, and told TechCrunch it pays contractors more than $1.5 million per day, with 30,000+ experts earning over $85 per hour on average. Its documentation sets out a fixed weekly cycle: hours logged Saturday to Friday (India Standard Time) are paid the following Wednesday through Stripe Connect, or Wise where Stripe is not available. Payment problems do happen, but they are usually bank, Stripe or setup issues with documented fixes, which the pay guide on this site covers.

Can people without a degree get work on Mercor?

Sometimes, but it depends on the listing. Mercor says that when a role requires proven domain expertise, such as years of experience or advanced technical knowledge, the role description states it and the evaluation adjusts. Many listings target specialists such as doctors, lawyers, engineers and PhDs, and Mercor's own advice on who to refer leans heavily toward credentialed experts. Read each listing's requirements and apply where your verifiable experience matches what it asks for.

Are Mercor job listings real?

Listings on work.mercor.com are opportunities advertised by Mercor's clients, and Mercor states that applications are accepted only through its platform (some roles also accept LinkedIn Easy Apply, which then sends you back to work.mercor.com). A listing can be real and still close quickly: roles show a Closing Soon badge at about 90% capacity, and closed listings stop accepting applications. If you see a role somewhere else, confirm it exists on work.mercor.com before sharing any details.

Is applying to Mercor worth the time?

It costs nothing to apply, and the main assessments are reusable: once you complete an AI interview or assessment, Mercor reuses the result for compatible roles, and the Assessments page can get you considered for work without a separate application. The cost is time and uncertainty, because Mercor does not give feedback on rejections. A sensible approach is to build a complete profile once, take the recommended assessments, and then apply only to listings that match your background.

How can I request deletion of my recorded interview?

Delete your account from Account Settings on work.mercor.com. Mercor says this removes your account and its data, including your résumé, interview and transcript, and takes effect as soon as you confirm. Deletion is refused while you have an active contract, a payout still processing, or an unanswered offer, so close those out first. Mercor may keep data where the law requires it, and deletion does not remove data that a company has already accessed.

Why do third-party job listings not clearly identify Mercor?

Many are posted by people in Mercor's referral program rather than by Mercor. Its referral rules let participants post roles publicly, including paid LinkedIn job slots, as long as they do not use the Mercor brand name or imply they represent Mercor. That is why a listing can describe AI training work without naming the company. Before entering personal information, follow the link through to work.mercor.com and confirm the role is listed there.

Is Mercor collecting interview data rather than hiring?

Mercor's published data policy says it uses interviews to evaluate candidates and run the platform, that interview data is not used to train AI models, and that it does not sell interview or résumé data. It also explains its business model: it earns a margin on clients' pay rates only once someone is placed, so it makes money from hiring, not from interviews. The volume of contractors paid (more than $1.5 million per day, per TechCrunch) is consistent with real hiring at scale.

Why do recruiters chase me to interview and then stop responding?

Outreach often comes from automated matching or from people in the referral program, while decisions come from each project's hiring team, which may already be full. Mercor says it cannot share individual feedback because of application volume, and that you are emailed when a final decision is made. Treat outreach as an invitation to apply, not a sign of an offer. Only messages from addresses ending in @mercor.com are official.

Is it safe to provide my SSN, birthdate, and bank details after a Mercor offer?

These requests are a normal part of Mercor's onboarding when they happen inside the platform. US contractors complete a W-9 with their SSN, Stripe requires identity and bank details (including SSN for US users) for financial regulation, and work authorization can ask for your date of birth. The safety rule is where you enter them: only through work.mercor.com and the Stripe or Wise flow it launches. Mercor says it never asks for fees, and that official email only comes from @mercor.com.

Are phone calls claiming to be from Mercor recruiters genuine?

Be cautious. Mercor's documentation describes support by email and in-platform assistants, and says all official communication comes from email addresses ending in @mercor.com. It does not describe recruiting by unsolicited phone call. If someone calls, do not share codes, ID numbers or bank details on the call; log in to work.mercor.com yourself and check whether the offer or request appears there.

Should unsolicited recruiter calls make me concerned about my data?

An unsolicited call is a reason to protect your accounts, not proof that Mercor leaked anything. Your public profile (such as LinkedIn) is enough for a scammer to target people interested in AI work. Mercor says it never requests payments or bank transfers and that payment setup happens only on work.mercor.com. If you shared anything on a suspicious call, change your passwords, and contact your bank if any financial details were involved.

Has anyone been offered money for their company's operational data?

Yes, this is a real Mercor product rather than a scam pattern. Mercor's homepage describes helping businesses monetize their data while keeping control and privacy through automated anonymization. It is separate from contractor work: it is a business deal for an organisation's data, not a job. Anyone considering it should treat it like any data-licensing agreement and involve whoever owns that data in their organisation.

Is selling business and customer data to Mercor worth it?

That depends on whether you have the right to sell it, which matters more than the price. Customer data is usually covered by privacy law and by your own customer contracts, so an individual employee generally cannot sell their employer's data. If you own the business, get legal advice on consent, anonymization and liability before signing. We cannot assess the commercial terms, because Mercor does not publish them.

Does the contract explicitly guarantee anonymization?

Check the specific contract you are offered. Mercor's homepage describes automated anonymization as part of the data product, but a homepage description is not a contractual guarantee, and Mercor does not publish the data-sale agreement. Before signing, make sure the agreement itself defines what will be anonymized, how, who can access the data, and what happens if anonymization fails.

Has anyone received real work and pay from Mercor, Micro1, or Ethos?

For Mercor, the evidence is strong: TechCrunch reported in October 2025 that Mercor pays more than $1.5 million per day to over 30,000 experts. This guide covers Mercor only, so we have not verified Micro1 or Ethos here. For any platform, the checks are the same: no fees to join, a published payout process, and hiring that happens inside its own platform.

Am I wasting time on repeated AI interviews?

You should not need to repeat the same one. Mercor says each unique interview only needs to be completed once, and if another application needs the same interview, your existing result is kept. Different roles can use different interviews, which is why some people take several. You can retake an interview up to three times, but hiring managers can see your retake count, so only retake for a real reason.
