Accepted but No Paid Work: Onboarding, Dry Spells and Realistic Income
Passing an assessment and signing a contract feels like being hired. On most AI training platforms it is not: it puts you in a pool, and paid work arrives only when a project needs your profile. This page separates acceptance, project access and task availability, and gives a realistic picture of income.

01 · Onboarding
Unpaid tests and onboarding effort
Most platforms pay nothing for qualification tests and project onboarding. The useful question is not whether that is fair but how much of it is worth your time.
Why does onboarding take much longer than the advertised time?
Estimates assume you read once and answer quickly; careful work takes longer, and DataAnnotation says thorough answers improve your chances. Long instructions, practice tasks and tool setup add time. Treat the advertised time as a minimum and plan a buffer.

Can support overturn a failed free-text onboarding assessment?
Rarely. Assessment decisions are usually final, and support teams typically do not re-grade. Where an error is clear, such as a technical fault, a short, evidenced request is worth one try; repeated appeals are not.
How much unpaid onboarding is reasonable before I stop trying?
Set your own cap, for example a few hours per project, and compare it with the project's rate and likely length. If a platform has given you no paid work after several onboardings, move your effort elsewhere. Prefer projects that publish their rate before onboarding, as Alignerr and Mindrift do.

Can onboarding fail before I finish answering?
Some assessments auto-submit when a timer ends or a session drops. Read the timing rules before you start, keep a stable connection, and save long answers elsewhere as you go; Mercor, for example, says autosave is not guaranteed.

Will failing one onboarding affect access to other projects?
Usually only for projects using the same qualification, but performance history does count. Alignerr says assignment considers assessment results and past performance, and DataAnnotation says problematic contributions can reduce access. One failure is rarely decisive.

Can I see why I failed a project onboarding?
Often not; individual feedback is rare in this industry. DataAnnotation says it cannot respond to every applicant, and Mercor provides feedback only on assessments where it is enabled. micro1 is an exception, letting you request feedback if its AI interview does not certify you.

Why can an experienced worker with strong ratings fail a new onboarding?
Each project has its own guidelines and graders, and new projects can test a different skill. Experience can even hurt if you apply old habits instead of the new rules. Read each project's guidelines as if you were new.
Can I get another chance after failing Aether onboarding?
Project-level retakes are set by each project and are not published. Check the onboarding instructions or ask in the project's support channel. Do not try to re-enter with a second account, which every major platform prohibits.
How do I appeal an immediate AI-use flag after an assessment I completed myself?
Contact support promptly with evidence of your process, such as drafts, notes and timestamps, and explain any permitted tools you used. Rules differ: Mercor allows AI only for grammar and light wording, and prohibits using it to evaluate responses or write explanations. Avoid pasting text from other apps into assessments, which can look automated.

Is completing separate unpaid certifications for every role worth the time?
Only for roles whose rate, volume and fit justify it. Reusable assessments are worth more: Mercor reuses completed interviews and assessments across compatible roles. Prioritise certifications that unlock several projects.

Can I request more time when onboarding requires extensive study within 72 hours?
You can ask, early and in writing, but deadlines are often fixed because clients need contributors quickly. If the timeline is unrealistic for your schedule, it may be better to decline than to rush and fail.
How can I prepare for subjective certifications with limited attempts and little feedback?
Read the guidelines several times, write your own short summary of the rules, and rate practice examples while noting which rule decided each one. On the real test, apply the guideline rather than your personal preference, and use your attempts carefully.
How do I decide whether a long final assessment is worth continuing?
Compare the remaining time with what the project pays and how long it is likely to last. If you are confident the project fits your skills and the rate is good, finishing is usually worth it. If the rate is unknown, ask before investing more.
Why do correct practice answers appear to fail the assessment?
Practice questions may be graded loosely or differently from the real test, and real tests often check the reasoning and format as well as the answer. Read the scoring criteria if they are given, and explain your reasoning in the expected format.
Will repeatedly failing one assessment prevent other project invitations?
It can lower your standing for related work, since platforms such as Alignerr consider assessment results and past performance. Rather than retrying the same assessment, build skill and target projects that fit you better.

Is a paid assessment still paid if the reviewer rejects it?
It depends on the terms. Some paid trials pay a fixed fee once your submission is reviewed, whatever the hiring decision, while task-based platforms such as Mindrift pay only for tasks that are accepted. Read the payment terms before you start.

02 · Access
Accepted but no paid work
Acceptance, project access and available tasks are three different things. Most confusion here comes from treating the first as the third.
Why is my dashboard empty after a fast-track promise of immediate work?
Fast-track routes speed up screening, not client demand. Work appears when a project needs your profile, which can lag behind acceptance. Contact support if a specific written promise of work was made, and keep applying elsewhere in the meantime.

How can I obtain the project Discord invitation?
On Alignerr, Discord is introduced during onboarding as the main channel for project updates, after contract and payment setup. If the invitation is missing, contact [email protected] or Intercom in the Alignerr app.
Is it normal to wait weeks for a first project after onboarding?
Yes, on many platforms. Alignerr says time to assignment depends on demand and your skill set, and that taking more assessments and performing well speeds matching. TELUS says it will contact you when a suitable project becomes available.
Am I actually onboarded if jobs say completed but payment setup is missing?
Not fully. Payment setup is part of onboarding on most platforms; Alignerr, for example, requires contract signup and Stripe Connect or PayPal setup before onboarding resources open. Complete it, since missing payment details can also hold up any pay.
Source: Alignerr: Onboarding process
Why does Alignerr onboard contractors when it has no available projects?
Platforms build pools ahead of demand so they can staff projects quickly when clients arrive. Alignerr says assignment depends on demand, your skills, assessment results, availability and past performance, so being onboarded is a prerequisite rather than a promise of work.
Source: Alignerr: FAQs
Has anyone received actual paid work after completing Alignerr training?
Yes; Alignerr publishes that it pays $1 million weekly and hires more than 1,000 people a week, and contributors report paid projects. Results vary widely by skill and region. Alignerr says no minimum hours apply and many contributors spend 20 to 25 hours a week.

Which assessments have led to real project assignments?
Those tied to live, in-demand work: platform-recommended assessments and project-specific qualifications. Mercor, for example, recommends assessments based on your résumé and active opportunities, and says passing one can get you considered without applying.
Source: Mercor Docs: Assessments
Should I wait for an invitation or actively apply to jobs after onboarding?
Depends on the model. On job-board platforms such as Alignerr and Mercor, keep applying to listings. On queue-based platforms such as DataAnnotation, work appears on your dashboard and you choose projects. Either way, do not rely on one platform.

How can I earn anything when my active projects contain no work?
Spread your access: hold active profiles on two or three platforms, take any additional qualifications offered, and check dashboards regularly, since some tasks are released in batches. A platform where you have performed well is usually the best place to look first.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs
What does shortlisted mean when I was already approved for a project?
Typically that you are in the pool being considered for a specific batch or client, not yet assigned work. Terminology is platform-specific, so ask the project's support channel what the status means and what comes next.
Why do urgent qualification invitations lead to no onboarding or paid work?
Invitations are often sent widely to fill a project quickly, and the project may fill or be cancelled before you finish. It is frustrating but common. Respond quickly to invitations that fit you, and do not invest hours in ones that do not.
Does passing OneForma certifications reliably lead to tasks?
Not reliably. Certifications qualify you for a project, but task volume depends on that project's needs. OneForma's terms make payment conditional on satisfactory completion of services, so work and pay follow actual project activity.
Does a job in the Active tab mean I have been hired?
It usually means you are on the project, not that tasks are available. Look for project instructions, tool access and actual tasks. If any are missing, ask the project's support channel what to do next.
Where do I start work if there is no button or onboarding email?
Check the platform's dashboard, project page and any required community channel (Alignerr uses Discord, for example). If nothing tells you how to start, contact support with your project name rather than guessing, since work done outside the official tools may not be paid.

Why does an active job say its certification deadline has expired?
Certifications often have deadlines tied to a project's start. If you missed it, ask support whether it can be reopened. If it expired before you were invited, report that too.
Why can I not take certifications newly added to an active application?
They may not be enabled for your account yet, or may be limited to certain regions or languages. Refresh, check eligibility, and contact support with a screenshot if they stay locked.
Why are projects put on hold after I pass all certifications?
Clients pause projects for budget, scope or timing reasons. Mercor, for example, says pauses are decided at client level, keep you in the project pool, and have no set length. A hold is not a judgment on you.
Can repeated recruitment invitations be trusted as evidence that paid work exists?
Only as evidence of recruitment. Invitations from a platform's official domain are genuine, but they show the platform is building a pool, not that you will get tasks. Paid tasks on your dashboard are the only real evidence.

What should I do first after being accepted?
Complete every setup step at once: contract, tax form, identity verification and payment method. Then read the project guidelines, join any required channel, and take any additional qualifications offered. Payment setup left undone is a common cause of late pay.
03 · Stability
Work availability and income stability
Platforms describe this work as flexible and freelance, and their own FAQs warn about shortages. Plan income on that basis.
Is a dashboard with qualifications but no paid tasks a normal dry spell?
Often, yes. Task availability tracks client demand. DataAnnotation says work depends on demand for your skills and your past performance, and TELUS warns of occasional task shortages. Keep any available qualifications current and wait a few days before assuming a problem.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs; TELUS Digital AI Community: FAQ
What does it mean when both tasks and qualifications disappear?
It can be platform-wide low demand or a change to your account's access. DataAnnotation says loss of projects can follow subpar contributions. If it persists for weeks while others report work, contact support from your account.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs
Does an empty dashboard mean I am banned or just waiting for work?
Usually waiting. A ban normally shows as being unable to log in or an explicit notice. An empty dashboard you can still access is typically a dry spell or reduced access. Contact support if it lasts.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs
How can I report time when a project disappears before submission?
Report the time you actually worked, with a short note explaining what happened, through whatever time or task reporting the platform uses. Take a screenshot when a project vanishes mid-task, and raise it with support if the time cannot be logged.
Is the empty dashboard affecting everyone or only my account?
Check the platform's community or subreddit for others reporting the same. If many people report dry spells, it is demand. If others have work and you do not, it may be your access or qualifications.
Is anyone receiving tasks during a platform-wide dry period?
Usually some people are, mostly those with specialist qualifications or strong quality records. Dry periods hit generalist work hardest. This is the main reason to pursue an extra specialist qualification.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs
What might cause several projects to pause at once?
A client finishing a training run, changing priorities or moving budget, or a shift across the industry. Projects on several platforms can share the same underlying clients, so pauses can cluster.
Is data annotation still worth entering in 2026?
For flexible side income, yes, and particularly for specialists. Demand has moved toward expert work: DataAnnotation's highest rates are for coding, STEM and professional tracks, and Mercor recruits doctors, lawyers and engineers. Basic labeling work is more crowded and lower paid.

Can I be marked inactive when no tasks have been available?
Some platforms remove inactive accounts, so read their rules. TELUS says prolonged inactivity may remove program access and lets you block out up to 30 days. Alignerr lists inactivity as a possible reason for suspension. If there were no tasks, keep evidence and tell support.
Is it realistic to make a full-time income from DataAnnotation?
Some people do, but it is not guaranteed. DataAnnotation sets no minimum hours and says skilled, high-performing workers find work daily, while also saying work depends on demand and performance. Treat full-time income as something you build, ideally across several platforms.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs
Do people use DataAnnotation as their only job?
Some do, but that is a risk. Access depends on demand and performance, and there is no employment protection or notice. If it is your only income, keep savings for gaps and maintain at least one other platform.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs
What risks should I understand before relying on annotation as my main income?
No guaranteed hours, sudden loss of access, pay or rate changes, no benefits, and your own tax liability. Platforms are explicit that this is independent contracting: Alignerr says contributors are freelancers, not employees, and TELUS warns of task shortages.
How can I reduce income gaps by joining several annotation platforms?
Qualify on two or three platforms with different clients, keep each in good standing, and check each one's rules on outside work; most allow it, though TELUS notes some projects have exclusivity clauses. Track hours per platform so you do not overcommit.
How long can it take to build enough project access for a full-time income?
Months rather than weeks, for most people who manage it. Access grows with qualifications and quality history. Plan on part-time income while you build it.
Can I continue doing a project that remains on my dashboard after a submission?
If tasks are still available to claim and you are not past the project's limits, usually yes. Check the project instructions for per-person limits, since exceeding them can create problems.
How can I stay eligible for ongoing projects?
Keep quality high, follow guidelines exactly, meet deadlines, and stay active within the platform's expectations. DataAnnotation says high-quality performance opens more projects, and Alignerr says past performance shapes future assignments.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs; Alignerr: FAQs
Do new projects appear automatically or do I need continual qualifications?
Both. Some projects open automatically to qualified workers; others need new qualifications. DataAnnotation offers additional specialist assessments after you pass, and Alignerr says taking more assessments improves matching.
