AI Training Pay: Real Rates, Payouts and Taxes
Headline rates in this industry are real but incomplete. What you take home depends on how much paid work is available, how much unpaid time sits around it, how tasks are reviewed and what your payout provider charges. This page sets out each platform's published pay and payment rules, then the questions people ask when money is late or lower than expected.

01 · Rates
Pay rates and effective earnings
Use published rates to compare platforms, then discount them for unpaid time and gaps. Your effective hourly rate is total pay divided by all the hours you put in, including onboarding and waiting.
What do full-time workers typically gross each month?
No platform publishes typical monthly earnings, and they vary enormously with track and task supply. As arithmetic only: 30 paid hours a week at DataAnnotation's general starting range of $25 to $50 is roughly $3,250 to $6,500 a month before tax, if that much work is available. Many workers get far fewer paid hours.

How do non-coders progress to higher-paying projects?
Through specialist or professional tracks that use expertise you already have: STEM degrees, licensed professions such as law, finance or medicine, or native fluency in another language. DataAnnotation pays $40 to $125+ an hour for STEM and professional work against $25 to $50 for general work.

How long does moving up the pay range take?
Platforms do not publish a timeline. DataAnnotation says all tiers include opportunities for higher rates based on strong performance. Moving to a different track usually happens faster by taking its qualification than by waiting for a raise.

How many weekly hours are needed to make meaningful side income?
As arithmetic: 10 paid hours a week at $25 is about $1,000 a month before tax; at $40 it is about $1,700. Alignerr says many of its contributors spend 20 to 25 hours a week, and TELUS asks for at least 10 on its AI Community programme.

Are the advertised coding rates realistic?
They are real starting ranges: DataAnnotation publishes $40 to $150+ an hour for coding. The top of the range is for strong performers and specialised work, and your effective rate depends on how many coding tasks are available to you.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs
Is DataAnnotation worth a developer's time?
As flexible side work, often yes: coding starts at $40 an hour and rises to $150+, with no minimum hours. As a replacement for a salaried developer job, usually no, because volume is not guaranteed and there are no benefits.

What good is a high hourly rate if there are too few tasks to cash out?
Very little, which is why task supply matters more than rate. Spread across platforms, prioritise those with steady projects in your track, and check withdrawal thresholds before you start; Mindrift, for example, says minimum withdrawal thresholds depend on your payout provider.
Why did my hourly rate drop suddenly?
Project rates are set per project and can change, and some platforms adjust by region; Mindrift says its rewards account for regional cost of living and are reviewed regularly. Moving to a different project can also change your rate. Ask support or the project lead for the reason, in writing.

Why do my earnings show fewer hours than I worked?
Common causes are time-zone cut-offs, hours under review, or time removed in a quality check. Mercor, for example, uses an India Standard Time week and removes hours only after human review, with disputes in the following pay period. Check your platform's cut-off rules, then dispute specific hours with evidence.
Can a reduced project rate return to its previous level?
Sometimes, if a project's pricing changes again, but there is no rule that it will. Treat the current rate as the real one when deciding whether to continue.
Can I reject a pay cut and successfully wait for a different project?
You can decline work, but there is no guarantee another project will come. If you have other qualifications or platforms, declining a poorly paid project is reasonable; if this is your only active project, weigh the risk of a gap.
Who can explain or review a pay reduction when the team lead cannot help?
The platform's support team, through its official channel: DataAnnotation's Support menu, [email protected] or Intercom, [email protected] for TELUS, or Mindrift's Help Center. Put the before-and-after rates and dates in writing.

Why did the rate change only after I completed unpaid onboarding?
Rates can be set or revised when a project starts or a client changes terms. To avoid it, prefer platforms that show the rate before onboarding, as Alignerr does on every listing and Mindrift does before each task, and screenshot the rate you were shown.

Which skills affect access to better pay rates?
Programming (DataAnnotation's coding track pays $40 to $150+), graduate-level STEM knowledge, licensed professions in law, finance or medicine, and native fluency in additional languages. Performance also counts: DataAnnotation says every tier offers higher rates for strong work.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs
Does switching projects permanently lower my rate?
No; rates are usually set per project, so a lower-paid project does not fix your rate for future ones. Check the rate of each new project before you start.
Source: Alignerr: FAQs; Mindrift: Everything you need to know about payments
How do I find out a project's pay rate before completing onboarding?
Look at the listing or task first: Alignerr says payment details are always listed in each project description before you start, Outlier says payment details are provided before each project, and Mindrift shows each task's reward before you begin. If a rate is not shown, ask before investing time.
Source: Alignerr: FAQs; Outlier: Frequently asked questions; Mindrift: Everything you need to know about payments
Why do I only see low-paid microtasks after qualifying for a higher-paid role?
Higher-paid projects may not have open tasks for your profile yet, while lower-paid ones fill the gap. Mindrift, for example, notes that a fixed-reward system gives everyone access to more tasks, including simpler ones. Keep your specialist qualifications active and check back.
Source: Mindrift: Everything you need to know about payments
Is an extremely low rate in my offer a typo or the actual compensation?
Ask before accepting, in writing, and check the pay unit: per task, per finished hour of audio or per hour worked can look very different. If the platform confirms the rate and it does not work for you, decline.
Why are the advertised AI Tutor tasks missing from the app?
Advertised roles reflect recruitment, and tasks appear only once you are assigned to an active project with work available. Check your assignment status, and ask support if you were told work would be available.
How can I find direct annotation work instead of very low-paid subcontracting?
Apply to platforms directly through their own sites rather than through middlemen or team leaders who take a cut, which can also breach account rules. Platforms such as DataAnnotation, Mercor, Alignerr and Mindrift contract with individuals directly.

02 · Payouts
Getting paid and withdrawals
Each platform uses a different payout provider and schedule. Most late-payment questions are answered by knowing which one applies to you.
Why is payment withdrawal unavailable today?
Common reasons are a minimum balance not yet reached, a cooldown after a recent withdrawal, earnings still under review, or a payout-provider issue. On DataAnnotation you request payment and it arrives within a few days via PayPal. Check your balance status and the provider's dashboard.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs
How do I resolve a cash-out error when PayPal says the problem is not theirs?
Contact the platform's support with the error message, time and a screenshot, and confirm the PayPal email on your platform account matches your PayPal account exactly; DataAnnotation stresses using the correct email. Also check that your PayPal account has no limitations.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs
Why do earnings say Scheduled rather than reaching PayPal?
Scheduled usually means the payout is queued for the next processing run. Wait for the platform's stated timing; DataAnnotation says deposits arrive within a few days of a request. If it stays scheduled well past that, contact support.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs
Should I withdraw whenever funds clear or on a regular schedule?
Withdrawing regularly limits your exposure if an account is suspended with money outstanding. Balance that against provider fees: Mindrift notes Payoneer and Tipalti can charge withdrawal fees, so fewer, larger withdrawals can cost less.
What withdrawal limits or cooldowns should a new worker know about?
They are set per platform and provider. Mindrift says minimum thresholds depend on your payout provider. Read your platform's payment page and the provider's terms before your first withdrawal.
Is there a minimum balance required for withdrawal?
On some platforms, through the payout provider. Mindrift says minimums depend on the provider you choose. DataAnnotation's FAQ describes requesting payment through PayPal without stating a minimum.

When will payment arrive if the client has not reviewed the work?
On review-based platforms, usually not until review is complete. Mindrift says tasks still under review are not yet eligible for payment, and OneForma reviews submissions before paying. Hourly platforms such as Mercor pay tracked hours on a fixed weekly schedule.

How do I challenge a partial payment that seems too low for completed work?
Use the platform's dispute route promptly and in writing, with task IDs, times and screenshots. Deadlines can be short: OneForma gives five business days to respond to a payment dispute it raises and three months to report an incorrect payment.
When should completed work appear on my invoice?
It depends on the billing cycle. TELUS generates a monthly invoice for you and pays up to 30 business days after the billing period ends. OneForma pays payment information submitted by the 25th around the 10th of the following month.
Source: TELUS Digital AI Community: FAQ; OneForma: Freelancer Terms and Conditions
Does payment initiated mean the money should already be in my account?
No; it means the platform has sent it to the provider. Banks and providers add time. On Mercor, for example, Stripe Standard payouts take up to five business days after release.

What should I do when hours and payment still show zero after the approval cutoff?
Check that your hours were logged in the official tool and before the cut-off, then contact support with dates and screenshots. Work logged outside the official tracking tool is often unpayable; Mercor, for example, does not pay untracked time.
Has anyone actually received payment for work on CrowdGen?
CrowdGen is Appen's worker platform (formerly Appen Connect). Appen is a listed company, and workers do report being paid, but delays are a common complaint. Check the payment terms for your specific project before starting.
Will I receive last week's earnings if my account is suspended?
It depends on why. Alignerr, for example, says all accepted work will be paid but fraudulent or incomplete work may not be, and that if Trust and Safety deactivates an account and the appeal is rejected, completed work is not paid. Contact support quickly and in writing.
Source: Alignerr: FAQs
Can I withdraw previous earnings if my account is blocked?
Sometimes, after review. Payment on a blocked account usually waits on the platform's investigation. Ask support in writing how outstanding earnings will be handled.
Source: Alignerr: FAQs
Are rejected tasks excluded from payment?
On task-based platforms, generally yes. Mindrift says only tasks accepted as meeting quality standards are paid, and OneForma reserves the right to withhold or deduct payment for poor-quality or incomplete work. Hourly contracts often pay logged time regardless of quality.

How do I track down pay after a short Turing contract?
Contact Turing's support with your contract details, dates and hours, and check the payment method set up in your account. Keep your own record of hours and any invoices.
How do I cash out if task scarcity prevents me from reaching the minimum balance?
You may need to wait until more tasks arrive, or switch to a payout method with a lower minimum if the platform offers one. Check minimums before investing in a low-volume platform.
03 · Tax
Taxes, benefits and records
Almost every platform treats you as an independent contractor and withholds nothing. This is general information, not tax advice; a local accountant can confirm what applies to you.
Does DataAnnotation send a 1099?
DataAnnotation's public FAQ does not say. It pays through PayPal, and PayPal issues Form 1099-K for US users only above $20,000 and 200 transactions (lower in some states). Either way, the income is taxable and you should report it from your own records.

When should I expect tax documents?
US 1099 forms are generally sent by early the following year; Mercor, for example, says its 1099-NEC arrives by February through Stripe. Platforms that do not issue forms leave reporting to you, so download your payout history for the year.
How do Canadian contractors report annotation income?
Generally as self-employment income on Form T2125 (Statement of Business or Professional Activities) with your tax return, deducting eligible expenses. Keep your payout records in Canadian dollars at the exchange rate used. A Canadian accountant can confirm GST/HST registration if your income is high enough.

Are taxes deducted from withdrawals?
Usually not. Platforms treat you as an independent contractor: Mercor, OneForma and Mindrift all leave tax to you. OneForma notes it will withhold if local law requires it. Set money aside yourself.
Source: Mercor Docs: Taxes and Work Authorization; OneForma: Freelancer Terms and Conditions; Mindrift: How Mindrift pays contributors
Where can I find the forms needed for tax filing?
Your platform account, payout provider (PayPal, Payoneer, Stripe or Hyperwallet statements) and, in the US, any 1099 issued. Your own national tax authority provides self-employment forms. Download annual statements every January.
Source: Mercor Docs: Taxes and Work Authorization; PayPal: Current Form 1099-K reporting thresholds
Do I owe tax on earnings I have not withdrawn?
Often yes, because many tax systems count income when you have earned and can access it, not when you move it to your bank. Rules differ by country, so ask a local accountant, and do not leave earnings sitting in a platform account to defer tax.
How much should I set aside for taxes?
Enough to cover income tax plus any self-employment or social contributions in your country. Many contractors set aside a fixed share of every payout as it arrives; a local accountant can give you the right percentage. In the US, quarterly estimated payments may also be due.
How should I compare freelance pay with a job that includes benefits?
Discount the hourly rate for what employers usually cover: paid leave, health cover, pension contributions, employer social taxes and stable hours. A contractor rate often needs to be well above an employee rate to match the same total value.
Why does payout setup request a Payoneer account and tax information?
Payoneer is the primary payout method for some platforms, including OneForma and Mindrift, and tax details are needed for compliance. OneForma requires a valid tax ID before payment and issues 1099s to US taxpayers. Enter these only inside the platform's official payment flow.
