AI Training and Data Annotation Jobs: The Complete, Honest Guide
AI training jobs pay people to write, rate and correct the data that AI models learn from. The work is real and some of it pays well, but the industry is crowded with outdated lists, unpaid tests, sudden dry spells and outright scams. This guide answers the 313 questions people ask most on Reddit, using each platform's own published policies, not rumours.

01 · Platforms
Finding legitimate AI training work
The platforms below publish their own pay, payment methods and requirements. Use those published facts to compare them, because job aggregator figures are often out of date or attributed to companies that never said them.
How do I get my first paid data annotation job without experience?
Start with platforms that hire generalists on writing and reasoning skill rather than job history. DataAnnotation says general work needs strong writing and critical thinking, with a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, and no coding. TELUS Digital says most of its projects need no formal education or AI background. Apply to several platforms at once, take each assessment carefully (DataAnnotation allows its Starter Assessment only once), and expect some to stay silent.

Which annotation platforms are legitimate for beginners?
Platforms that publish their requirements and accept generalists include DataAnnotation (general track, $25 to $50 an hour), TELUS Digital AI Community (beginner annotation to expert evaluation), Alignerr (which says talented generalists are welcome alongside degree holders) and Mindrift (which says you can join from any country it supports). Legitimate ones share three traits: no fee to join, a published payment method, and hiring inside their own website.

Are multilingual projects easier to enter than general annotation?
They can be, if you are natively fluent in a language a project needs, because the pool of qualified people is smaller. DataAnnotation runs a separate multilingual track ($25 to $40 an hour) that requires native fluency in a language beyond English, and TELUS says posting availability often depends on the language and cultural needs of its projects. They are not easier if your language is widely available.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs; TELUS Digital AI Community: FAQ
Which AI training platforms are easiest for a complete beginner to get into?
No platform guarantees acceptance, but entry bars differ. TELUS Digital says most projects need no formal education, only a computer or smartphone, internet, attention to detail and the ability to follow guidelines. DataAnnotation's general track asks for a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Mercor and Alignerr lean toward credentialed specialists. Beginners should apply to the lower-barrier programmes first and add specialist platforms as they gain experience.

Which AI training platforms have actually paid their workers?
Several publish their payout scale. DataAnnotation says it has paid hundreds of millions of dollars to contractors since 2020. Mercor told TechCrunch in October 2025 it pays more than $1.5 million per day. Alignerr's homepage states $1 million paid weekly. Outlier says it pays weekly via PayPal, Airtm or ACH. These are self-reported figures, but they come with documented payment systems, which scams lack.

Which platforms offer beginner work versus specialist work?
DataAnnotation splits it most clearly: general ($25 to $50), multilingual ($25 to $40), coding ($40 to $150+), STEM ($40 to $125+, master's or PhD, or bachelor's plus 10 years) and professional ($40 to $125+, licensed law, finance or medicine). TELUS covers beginner annotation through expert review. Mercor focuses on specialists such as doctors, lawyers and engineers. Mindrift prices tasks by required expertise.

Where can I find regular LLM evaluation and RLHF projects?
LLM evaluation (rating, ranking and correcting model answers) is the core work on DataAnnotation, Outlier, Mercor, Alignerr and Mindrift, and TELUS lists prompt evaluation and expert review among its tasks. No platform promises regular work: DataAnnotation says work is available if you qualify for long-running projects and perform well. Holding active profiles on two or three platforms is the most reliable way to keep tasks coming.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs; Outlier: Frequently asked questions; TELUS Digital AI Community: FAQ
Which communities or job boards share AI evaluation opportunities?
The most reliable listings are on the platforms' own job pages: Mercor's Explore page, Alignerr's jobs page and TELUS Digital's careers site (jobs.telusdigital.com). Subreddits for each platform are useful for experiences but full of referral links, so verify any opportunity on the official site before applying. TELUS, for example, says its recruiters only use @telusinternational.com, @telusdigital.com or @telusinternational.ai email addresses.

What are reliable alternatives after an Outlier or Remotasks deactivation?
Platforms independent of Scale AI (which operates Outlier) include DataAnnotation, Mercor, Alignerr (Labelbox), TELUS Digital, Mindrift (Toloka) and OneForma (Centific). Each runs its own screening, so a deactivation elsewhere does not carry over. Read each platform's rules on multiple accounts and location honesty, because breaking those is the usual reason for losing access.
Source: Outlier: Frequently asked questions; Alignerr: FAQs; Mindrift: Eligibility and geographic restrictions; OneForma: Freelancer Terms and Conditions
Which alternatives have consistent work for skilled annotators?
No platform guarantees consistency; every one ties work to client demand and your performance. DataAnnotation says high-quality performance opens more projects. Alignerr says assignment depends on skills, assessment results, availability and past performance. TELUS asks for a 10 to 40 hour weekly commitment on its AI Community programme but warns tasks can run short. Spreading across platforms is what creates consistency.

Which platforms offer well-paid coding or STEM annotation work?
DataAnnotation publishes $40 to $150+ an hour for coding (Python, JavaScript, HTML, C++, C#, SQL) and $40 to $125+ for STEM roles that need a master's or PhD, or a bachelor's plus 10 years of experience. Mercor, Alignerr and Mindrift all run coding and STEM projects with rates shown per listing or task. Expect a harder, often timed, assessment for these tracks.

Where can I find legal AI training work without an active US bar license?
Requirements are set per project. DataAnnotation's professional track asks for licensed credentials in law, finance or medicine. Mindrift runs legal AI projects priced by expertise, and Mercor lists legal roles with their own stated requirements. Non-US qualifications, legal research roles and legal writing tasks are worth searching for; read each listing's credential requirement before applying, since it is usually decisive.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs; Mindrift: Everything you need to know about payments
How do I find opportunities beyond the same few companies on outdated lists?
Check that a list is dated and that each platform still operates, then go to the source: platform job pages change weekly, while blog lists age fast. Toloka's tasks, for example, have moved to Mindrift, so older lists point people to the wrong place. Search each platform's own careers or jobs page, and treat any list without dates or sources as a starting point only.
Which other platforms compare well with DataAnnotation on pay?
On published figures: Alignerr's homepage advertises an $80 per hour average, Mercor told TechCrunch its experts average over $85 an hour, and DataAnnotation publishes $25 to $50 for general work and up to $150+ for coding. Outlier and Mindrift show pay per project or task rather than a headline average. Compare effective pay, not headlines, because task availability decides what you actually earn.

Are project links and referrals useful for getting my first assignment?
A referral link mainly records who referred you; it rarely changes how you are assessed. Mercor, for example, says every candidate is evaluated on their own qualifications regardless of the referrer. Some programmes offer special fast-track routes for selected roles. Use referral links only from people or sites you trust, and always confirm the link lands on the platform's real domain.

02 · Safety
Scams, fees and your personal data
The single most reliable scam test comes from the FTC: never pay anyone to get paid, or to get a job. Real platforms do collect sensitive information, though, so the second test is where you enter it.
Are AI training jobs legitimate?
The category is legitimate. AI companies pay for human feedback at scale: DataAnnotation reports hundreds of millions paid since 2020, and Mercor raised money at a $10 billion valuation in 2025. Scams exist alongside the real work, usually as task scams that ask you to deposit money or pay to unlock earnings. The FTC's rule settles most cases: real employers never ask you to pay to get paid.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs; TechCrunch: Mercor quintuples valuation to $10B with $350M Series C (Oct 27, 2025); FTC Consumer Advice: How to spot and avoid task scams (Aug 2025)
Are Reddit ads promising beginner AI training work genuine?
Some advertise real platforms, often through referral or affiliate links, and some are scams. Check where the ad lands: a real opportunity takes you to the platform's own domain, asks for nothing paid, and screens you with an assessment. Ads promising guaranteed income or pay just for signing up are red flags, as DataAnnotation itself warns.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs; FTC Consumer Advice: How to spot and avoid task scams (Aug 2025)
Are unpaid hiring tests being used to obtain free AI training work?
There is no published evidence that the major platforms use assessments as free production data, and Mercor states assessment responses are used only for evaluation and matching and never sold. Unpaid tests are still a real cost to you. Set a limit on how many hours you will invest per platform, and favour platforms that publish rates and requirements before the test.
Why do AI training platforms ask for so much personal information?
Mostly for identity, payment and tax compliance. TELUS says ID verification confirms you are the applicant, prevents duplicate accounts, secures payments and meets anti-money-laundering rules. DataAnnotation, Alignerr and Mercor all use Persona for ID checks. Legitimate requests happen inside the platform's own site; a legitimate platform will not ask for your bank password or a payment.
Source: TELUS Digital AI Community: FAQ; DataAnnotation: FAQs; Alignerr: FAQs
How will platforms use my interview recordings and written submissions?
Each platform's privacy policy governs this, so read it. Mercor, for example, says it uses interviews to evaluate candidates and run its platform, does not use interview data to train AI models, and does not sell résumé or interview data. TELUS says it uses your information only for onboarding, project access and payment, and does not sell it.
Source: Mercor Docs: How Mercor Uses AI and Data; TELUS Digital AI Community: FAQ
Is it safe to upload my driver's license before I know much about the project?
It is normal on legitimate platforms, which verify identity before giving access to client work. DataAnnotation, for example, uses Persona and asks for a physical, unexpired government photo ID. The safety check is the domain and the vendor: upload only inside the platform's own site or its named verification provider, and never send ID by email or chat to a recruiter.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs; Alignerr: FAQs
Are offers to pay me just for verifying an AI-work account legitimate?
No. Someone paying you to verify an account wants to work under your identity, which is account sharing and identity fraud. Platforms ban it: Mercor monitors for impersonation, account sharing and multiple accounts, and TELUS uses ID verification specifically to confirm the applicant is the person doing the work. You also become liable for tax on income you never earned.
Source: Mercor Docs: Account Security and Conduct; TELUS Digital AI Community: FAQ
What are the risks of joining a team that shares one verified account?
You can lose all of the money and the account. Platforms prohibit it: Mercor names account sharing and impersonation as violations that can lead to payment reversals and suspension, and Alignerr says that if Trust and Safety deactivates an account and the appeal fails, completed work is not paid. The account holder also carries the tax and legal liability.
Source: Mercor Docs: Account Security and Conduct; Alignerr: FAQs
Why is a platform asking me to pay a fee to withdraw my earnings?
That is the defining sign of a task scam. The FTC warns that scammers show fake earnings and then ask you to pay to withdraw them, and that you should never pay anyone to get paid. Note the difference from legitimate payout fees charged by providers such as Payoneer or Tipalti, which Mindrift notes, and which are deducted from what you withdraw, never paid in advance.

Are Telegram or WhatsApp AI-job recruitment messages trustworthy?
Treat them as scams. The FTC advises ignoring generic, unexpected texts or WhatsApp messages about jobs and says real employers will not contact you that way. Legitimate platforms recruit through their own websites and official email domains, such as TELUS's @telusinternational.com and @telusdigital.com.
Source: FTC Consumer Advice: Task scams create the illusion of making money; TELUS Digital AI Community: FAQ
Is Mindrift trustworthy enough to spend time on its tests?
Mindrift is operated by Toloka AI BV and publishes its payment model: payouts twice a month, on the 5th and 20th, through Payoneer or Tipalti (PayPal), for completed and accepted tasks at the rate shown before you start. It says it never asks contributors to pay for training, equipment or deposits. Check its geographic restrictions first, since some countries are excluded.

What happens to essays submitted during a failed English assessment?
Platforms keep assessment submissions under their privacy policy; check the specific one. Mercor, for example, says assessment responses are stored securely, used only for evaluation and matching, and never sold or shared commercially, and that you can delete your account and its data from account settings.

How can I judge conflicting Reddit reviews and suspiciously promotional accounts?
Weigh claims by evidence. Promotional posts usually carry a referral link and no specifics; useful posts give dates, project types and payment details. Cross-check anything important against the platform's own FAQ or payment page, which is what this guide does. Treat both glowing and furious single posts as one person's experience, not the platform's policy.
03 · Eligibility
Country, language and ID requirements
Eligibility is the biggest filter in this industry, and it is often discovered late. Check each platform's published country rules before investing time in its assessment.
Which legitimate AI training platforms accept applicants in India?
India is on Mercor's supported-countries list, with payouts through Stripe in INR. TELUS Digital, Mindrift (subject to its restrictions list) and OneForma recruit globally. Platforms can still restrict individual projects to certain regions or languages, so check each listing's location requirement as well as the platform's country list.
Source: Mercor Docs: Supported Countries for Payment; TELUS Digital AI Community: FAQ; Mindrift: Eligibility and geographic restrictions
Which beginner-friendly platforms accept workers in Bangladesh?
Bangladesh is on Mercor's supported-countries list, though Mercor tends to hire specialists. TELUS Digital and OneForma recruit globally and post region- and language-specific projects, and Mindrift accepts most countries outside its restrictions list. Look for Bengali-language projects, where native speakers have an advantage.
Source: Mercor Docs: Supported Countries for Payment; TELUS Digital AI Community: FAQ; Mindrift: Eligibility and geographic restrictions
Are there Bengali-language opportunities with reasonably consistent tasks?
Language projects appear when clients need them, so consistency varies. TELUS says postings in a region often depend on a project's language and cultural needs, and recommends registering for future opportunities if none are open. Set up profiles on several global platforms with Bengali listed as a native language so you are matched when projects open.
Source: TELUS Digital AI Community: FAQ
Why might a platform advertise Bengali work but exclude Bangladesh?
Because language and location are separate requirements. A client may want Bengali speakers who live in a particular country, and platforms can also be limited by where their payment and identity providers operate. Mindrift, for example, excludes some countries because identity verification and payment processes there are insufficient. Read both the language and location fields on a listing.
Which annotation platforms have hired people in East Africa?
Coverage is patchy. Mercor's list includes Rwanda and Tanzania but, as of October 2026, excludes Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda. Mindrift's restrictions also name Kenya. TELUS and OneForma recruit globally by project, so check their current listings for your country.
Source: Mercor Docs: Supported Countries for Payment; Mindrift: Eligibility and geographic restrictions; TELUS Digital AI Community: FAQ
Which platforms accept African applicants rather than only US or EU workers?
Mercor publishes the clearest list: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Madagascar, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania and Tunisia. Mindrift accepts most countries outside its restrictions list. TELUS and OneForma recruit by project worldwide.
Source: Mercor Docs: Supported Countries for Payment; Mindrift: Eligibility and geographic restrictions; TELUS Digital AI Community: FAQ
Can workers in Egypt access coding projects after bilingual acceptance?
Often, yes, but it is a separate qualification. Egypt is on Mercor's supported list, and platforms such as DataAnnotation run coding as its own track with its own assessment. Being accepted for bilingual work does not unlock coding automatically; take the coding assessment where the platform offers it.
Source: Mercor Docs: Supported Countries for Payment; DataAnnotation: FAQs
Why was my region declared unsupported only after recruitment and verification?
Because country support often depends on the payment and identity providers, and on client rules for each project, which can be checked late or change. Mindrift says eligibility can change and that some countries are excluded for payment or identity reasons. Before investing hours, check the platform's published country list, not just whether the sign-up form accepts you.
Source: Mindrift: Eligibility and geographic restrictions; Mercor Docs: Supported Countries for Payment
Why are my starter assessments only in languages I do not speak?
Platforms offer the assessments that match open demand, and multilingual tracks are separate. DataAnnotation, for example, lets you choose a qualification track when you sign up. If only other languages appear, check that your profile lists your languages correctly, and look for a general English track instead.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs
Will suitable language assessments appear later?
Possibly, when clients need your language. TELUS says project availability depends on language and cultural needs and recommends staying registered for future opportunities. Keep your profile's languages and location accurate so new assessments reach you.
Source: TELUS Digital AI Community: FAQ
Can I work while visiting a different country?
Check the platform's rules before you travel. Location is tied to eligibility and to client contracts, and many platforms block VPNs: Mercor blocks sign-ins through VPNs and proxies, and Mindrift says misrepresenting your location can lead to account termination. Short trips are not the same as moving, but ask support in advance rather than risking a flag.
Source: Mercor Docs: Account Security and Conduct; Mindrift: Eligibility and geographic restrictions
Can Americans do annotation work while living abroad?
Sometimes. Projects often specify where contributors must live, so a US-only project may exclude you while you are abroad. For tax, US citizens generally still file as US persons: Mercor, for example, asks US taxpayers to complete a W-9 and select United States in Stripe even when living abroad. Check each listing's residency requirement.
Are there annotation opportunities for Brazilians who are not bilingual?
Yes, for Portuguese-language projects, which are posted when clients need them; Alignerr, for example, has listed Portuguese localization roles. English-only general tracks usually need fluent English. Brazil is supported by Mercor, paid through Wise rather than Stripe.
Source: Alignerr homepage (powered by Labelbox); Mercor Docs: Supported Countries for Payment
Which countries can use DataAnnotation?
DataAnnotation does not publish an official country list on its FAQ, which says only that workers must be fluent in English and have reliable internet. Third-party lists conflict, so we do not repeat them. The sign-up flow is the authoritative check for your country.
Source: DataAnnotation: FAQs
What identity documents can I use if I do not have a passport or driver's license?
Most platforms accept other government-issued photo ID. DataAnnotation accepts a driver's licence, passport or other national or state ID card, as long as it is physical, unexpired and shows your photo. Photos or scans of a document are not accepted. If you have no photo ID at all, you will need to obtain one before verification.
