What most guides leave out
Cancelling in the wrong store does nothing
This is the single most common reason people get charged after cancelling. If Apple or Google took the payment, only Apple or Google can stop it. Check your email for the original receipt: it will name whoever billed you.
Deleting the app is not cancelling
Removing ChatGPT from your phone leaves the subscription running. The billing relationship lives in your Apple or Google account, not on the device.
You keep paid access until the period ends
Cancelling partway through a month does not usually trigger a refund or cut you off immediately. You keep the paid features until the date you already paid through, then drop to the free plan.
Your conversations survive
Cancelling changes the plan, not the account. Your chat history stays where it is and remains readable on the free tier. Deleting the account is a separate, permanent action.

Frequently asked questions
Will I get a refund if I cancel halfway through the month?
Usually not. The normal behaviour is that you keep paid access until the end of the period you already paid for, and are simply not billed again. Refund policy differs by platform, and Apple and Google run their own refund request processes, so ask whoever took the payment.
I cancelled but was charged again. What happened?
Almost always this means the subscription was bought through the App Store or Play Store while the cancellation happened on the web, or the opposite. Find the receipt for the charge, see who issued it, and cancel there. If OpenAI genuinely billed you after a confirmed web cancellation, contact OpenAI support with the receipt.
Does cancelling delete my chats?
No. Cancelling only ends the paid plan. Your conversation history stays on the account and you can still read it on the free tier. If you want the chats gone as well, clear your history or delete the account, which are separate actions.
Can I resubscribe later at the same price?
You can resubscribe at any time, but at whatever price is current then, not the price you were previously paying. Legacy pricing is not normally preserved through a cancellation.
