Web (chatgpt.com)
- 1Sign in at chatgpt.com with the account you want to remove.
- 2Open Settings from your profile icon.
- 3Go to Data controls.
- 4If you want a copy of your conversations, choose Export data first and wait for the download link to arrive by email.
- 5Choose Delete account.
- 6Complete the confirmation screen, which asks you to type your email address or a confirmation word.
Android app
OpenAI documents an in-app deletion route for Android.
- 1Open the ChatGPT app and sign in.
- 2Open the menu and go to Settings.
- 3Open Data controls.
- 4Tap Delete account and complete the confirmation.
- 5Separately, cancel the subscription in the Play Store if you had one.

What most guides leave out
Deleting the account does not stop mobile billing
If you subscribed through the App Store or Play Store, that subscription is a contract with Apple or Google. Deleting your OpenAI account leaves it running and you will keep being charged. Cancel it in the store first.
Export before you delete, not after
Once the account is gone there is no route back to your conversations. The export lands by email as a downloadable archive, so start it and wait for the link to arrive before deleting.
The email address may not be immediately reusable
People often delete an account intending to sign straight back up with the same address. That does not reliably work right away. If you only want a fresh start, clearing your chat history and turning off memory achieves that without destroying the account.
Deletion is not instant everywhere
Access ends immediately, but OpenAI describes deleting the underlying data within 30 days, and it may retain a limited set for longer where it is legally required to. That is normal, and it is worth knowing if you are deleting for privacy reasons.

Can I recover a deleted ChatGPT account?
No. OpenAI describes account deletion as permanent and not reversible. That is why exporting your data first matters, and why clearing history is the better option if you only want a clean slate rather than a closed account.
Do I need to delete my account to remove my chats?
No, and usually you should not. You can delete individual conversations, delete all chats at once from Settings, and turn off memory, all without closing the account. Deleting the account is the right move only when you want the whole relationship ended.
What happens to my ChatGPT Plus subscription?
If you subscribed on the web, cancel it before deleting so the billing relationship is cleanly closed. If you subscribed through Apple or Google, you must cancel in that store, because deleting the OpenAI account has no effect on their billing.
How long until my data is actually gone?
OpenAI states it deletes account data within 30 days, except for a limited set it may keep longer where required or permitted by law. Access to the account itself ends as soon as the deletion is confirmed.
