Delete a single conversation

- 3Open Memory.
- 4Review the stored items and delete individually, or clear all memory.

What most guides leave out
Deleting chats does not clear memory
This is the one that surprises people. Memory is a separate store of facts ChatGPT has decided to keep about you. You can delete every conversation and it will still greet you knowing your job, your projects and your preferences until you clear memory too.
Deleted is not instantly gone
A deleted chat disappears from your view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. It can be kept longer if it has already been de-identified, or where OpenAI has a security or legal obligation to retain it.
Turning off training does not delete anything
The training toggle governs what happens to future conversations. It does not reach back and remove chats you have already had. If you want those gone, delete them as well.
Use temporary chat for anything you do not want kept
Rather than deleting afterwards, start a temporary chat. It does not appear in your history and does not feed memory, which is a cleaner answer than remembering to clean up later.

Frequently asked questions
Can I recover a deleted ChatGPT conversation?
No. Once you confirm the deletion the conversation is removed from your history and scheduled for permanent deletion. If you might want it later, use Archive instead, which hides the chat from the main list but keeps it.
Why does ChatGPT still know things about me after I deleted my chats?
Because memory is a separate feature from your conversation list. Clear it under Settings, Personalization, Memory. You can delete individual remembered items, clear everything, or switch memory off so nothing new is stored.
Does clearing history stop OpenAI training on my data?
Not on its own. Deleting conversations and controlling training are separate settings. Turn off the improve-the-model option in Data controls if you want future chats excluded, and delete existing chats if you want those removed too.
What is the difference between archiving and deleting?
Archiving moves a conversation out of your main list while keeping it, so you can bring it back. Deleting removes it and schedules it for permanent deletion. Archive when you want a tidy sidebar, delete when you want the content gone.
