Bolt.new Review: Is the Bolt AI App Builder Worth It?
Bolt.new turns a plain-English prompt into a working web app in your browser, with hosting and a database built in. It is fast and genuinely useful for prototypes and simple products, but token costs grow with your project. Here is what it does well, where it struggles and what it costs in November 2026.

01 · What it is
What Bolt.new does
A full development environment and AI agent in a browser tab.
What is Bolt.new?
Bolt.new, often called Bolt AI, is an AI-powered builder for websites, web apps and mobile apps. You type what you want, click Build now, and Bolt writes the code, installs packages, runs a live preview and lets you publish, all without installing anything. It is made by StackBlitz, the company behind WebContainers, the technology that first ran Node.js directly in a browser.

How does Bolt.new work?
Bolt runs a complete development environment, with a file system, terminal and package manager, inside your browser through WebContainers, so the AI can install npm packages and run your app with no cloud machine to wait for. A large language model writes and edits the code as you chat, and you see the preview update in real time. Bolt lets you choose which AI agent powers your builds.

What can I build with Bolt?
Landing pages, marketing sites, dashboards, internal tools, CRUD apps and prototypes in most popular JavaScript frameworks; Bolt says that if a project runs on StackBlitz it runs on Bolt. Mobile apps are built through its Expo integration. It also imports designs from Google Stitch and projects from Lovable.

What is Bolt Cloud?
Bolt Cloud is the built-in backend that arrived with Bolt V2: databases, hosting with analytics, and custom domains inside the same project, so you do not need separate accounts for each service. Reviews also describe authentication, file storage and edge functions as part of the package.

02 · Pricing
Bolt.new pricing and tokens
Bolt bills in AI tokens, and how fast they go depends on your project.
How much does Bolt.new cost?
Free is $0 with 1 million tokens a month, a 300,000 token daily limit, website hosting, unlimited databases and Bolt branding on sites. Pro is $25 a month billed monthly, and you can save up to 28% with yearly billing, starting at 10 million tokens a month with no daily limit, rollover of unused tokens, custom domains and no Bolt branding. Teams is $30 per member a month and adds centralized billing and admin controls. Enterprise is custom. Our Bolt pricing page breaks down real costs.

Why do my Bolt tokens run out so fast?
Every message sends your project's context to the model, so a larger codebase costs more tokens per change than a small one. Long debugging loops, where the AI tries a fix, fails and tries again, burn tokens quickly. Plan the app before prompting, ask for one change at a time, and export or reset bloated projects. On the free plan, AI interactions pause when you hit the daily limit until the next day.

Is Bolt.new free?
Yes, there is a real free plan with 1 million tokens a month, capped at 300,000 a day, plus hosting and databases. It is enough to build and publish a small site, but sites carry Bolt branding and you cannot use a custom domain.

03 · Verdict
Strengths, weaknesses and alternatives
Where Bolt shines and where you will feel its limits.
What is Bolt.new good at?
Speed from idea to a running preview, because everything runs client-side; a complete IDE you can drop into to edit code yourself; built-in hosting and database so a prototype can go live the same day; and ownership of the code, including for commercial projects. It works on phones and tablets too.

What are Bolt.new's weaknesses?
Token costs are hard to predict and rise as apps grow. Complex business logic, security hardening and long-term maintenance still need an experienced developer, and AI fix loops can make a large codebase messy. Treat Bolt output as a strong starting point, then review authentication, permissions, data validation and backups before real users arrive.

Bolt.new vs Lovable: which is better?
Both start at $25 a month. Bolt bills tokens per user, with 10 million a month on Pro, while Lovable bills credits shared across a workspace, with 100 a month on Pro. For teams, Bolt charges $30 per member while Lovable's Business plan is $50 a month with no per-seat fee. Bolt suits people who want to see and edit the code; Lovable leans further toward non-developers. Try both on the same small project. Is Bolt.new worth it?
For prototypes, landing pages, hackathon projects and small internal tools, yes: the free plan is enough to judge it, and Pro at $25 a month is good value if you build regularly. You can save up to 28% with yearly billing. For a product you plan to scale, use Bolt to get to a working first version fast, then move the code into a normal repository and development workflow.
