NotebookLM is Google's AI research and study tool. You create a notebook, add sources such as PDFs, Google Docs, Slides, website links, YouTube videos, pasted text or audio, and then chat with them. Is NotebookLM the same as Gemini Notebook?
Yes. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026 as part of bringing its AI tools under the Gemini brand. The product, your notebooks and the notebooklm.google.com address carried over; most people still search for it as NotebookLM.

How is NotebookLM different from ChatGPT or the Gemini app?
ChatGPT and the Gemini app answer from their general training and the web. NotebookLM is designed to answer from the sources in your notebook, cite them, and say when your sources do not cover something. That makes it better for studying a reading list, analysing interviews or reports, and any work where you must be able to trace every claim. For open-ended brainstorming or tasks that need outside knowledge, a general assistant is still the better tool.

How to use NotebookLM step by step
Most people are productive in under ten minutes.
How do I start using NotebookLM?
Go to notebooklm.google.com, sign in with a Google account, and create a new notebook. Add your sources (upload files, paste links or text, or connect Google Drive files), then ask a question in the chat panel. Start with a summary request such as 'What are the five main arguments across these sources?' and click the citation numbers to check where each point came from.

What are Audio Overviews?
An Audio Overview turns your sources into a podcast-style conversation between two AI hosts who discuss the main ideas. You can usually steer it with instructions such as which topics to focus on or which audience to explain it for, and listen while commuting or exercising. It is one of the most popular features and is included on every plan, with limits that rise on paid tiers.

NotebookLM limits and pricing
Every plan has the core features; paying raises the limits.
Is NotebookLM free?
Yes. Anyone with a Google account can use the standard plan free, with standard limits for chat and for generating Audio Overviews, slides and other artifacts, and up to 50 sources per notebook. There is no trial period.
How many sources can a notebook have?
Up to 50 sources per notebook on the free plan, 100 with Google AI Plus, 300 with Google AI Pro and 600 with Google AI Ultra, according to Google's plans page. Each individual source is capped at roughly 500,000 words or 200MB for uploaded files.

What do the paid plans add?
Paid access comes bundled with Google AI subscriptions rather than as a standalone NotebookLM purchase. Google AI Plus doubles the usage limits of the free plan and adds early access to new features; Google AI Pro gives four times the free limits, higher access to Gemini models and priority access to new features; Google AI Ultra gives 5 to 20 times the Pro limits. Check Google's plans page for the current price in your country, as plans are only offered in specific regions.

Why did I hit a usage limit?
Since September 2026 NotebookLM measures usage with a compute-based budget that refreshes over rolling five-hour periods, with a weekly ceiling. Generating many Audio or Video Overviews, or chatting heavily across very large notebooks, uses the budget fastest. Waiting for the refresh or moving to a higher Google AI plan raises what you can do.

Tips for better NotebookLM answers
Grounded answers are only as good as the notebook behind them.
How should I organise notebooks?
Keep one notebook per project, course or question rather than one giant notebook for everything. Smaller, focused notebooks give sharper answers, make citations easier to check and stay well inside the source limits.
How do I write good prompts for NotebookLM?
Ask for a specific output and audience: 'Compare how sources 2 and 5 define customer churn, in a table', or 'Write a one-page study guide for a first-year student with ten quiz questions'. Can NotebookLM still be wrong?
Yes. Grounding reduces hallucinations but does not remove them: the model can misread a passage, merge two sources, or over-summarise. Click the citations for anything you will rely on, especially numbers, quotes and dates.

Is NotebookLM safe for confidential documents?
Google says NotebookLM does not use your personal uploads, queries or responses to train its models, but your sources are stored in your Google account. For regulated or highly confidential material, use a work or school account where your organisation's Google Workspace data protections apply, and follow your company's policy.

Can I share a notebook?
Yes. You can share a notebook with other people so they can view it or chat with its sources, which is useful for study groups and teams. Paid and Workspace plans add more sharing controls and analytics.

Does my company's Google Workspace include NotebookLM?
