LM Studio vs Ollama: Which Local AI Runner Should You Use?

LM Studio and Ollama both let you run open models such as Qwen, Gemma, Llama and GLM on your own computer for free. LM Studio is a polished desktop app; Ollama is a command-line runtime built to serve models to other software. Since 2026 each has moved into the other's territory, so the choice is about workflow.

What each tool is

Same engine underneath, different front doors.

What is the difference between LM Studio and Ollama?

LM Studio is an app you click through: it has a built-in model browser connected to Hugging Face, sliders for context length and GPU offload, memory estimates, a chat window and a Developer tab that starts a local server. Ollama is a background service you drive with commands such as ollama run and ollama pull, designed so editors, agents and apps can call models through its API. Both are built on llama.cpp for GGUF models and both added Apple's MLX format for faster inference on Macs.

Does LM Studio use Ollama?

No. They are separate projects that share a common ancestor, llama.cpp. LM Studio has its own runtime and model store, and Ollama has its own Modelfile system and model library, so a model downloaded in one is not automatically available in the other.

Are LM Studio and Ollama free?

Yes for local use. LM Studio has been free for both personal and work use since July 2025, with paid Enterprise and team features such as SSO and model controls. Ollama is open source and free locally; its cloud models are a separate service that moved to per-token pricing with usage included on its paid plans in August 2026.

Is LM Studio open source?

No. LM Studio's desktop app is proprietary software from Element Labs, Inc., though its CLI and SDKs are published on GitHub. Ollama is open source. If an open-source license matters to your organization, that favours Ollama.

02 · Performance

Speed and resource use

Differences are real but smaller than forum arguments suggest.

Is LM Studio faster than Ollama?

On Apple Silicon it often has been. One July 2026 test on a Mac found LM Studio running MLX 4-bit models 23% to 27% faster than Ollama running GGUF Q4_K_M versions of the same models, for example 89 versus 71 tokens per second on Llama 3.1 8B. Ollama has since added its own MLX engine, which narrows the gap, and on Windows and Linux with NVIDIA GPUs both rely on llama.cpp and perform similarly. Test the exact model and quantization you plan to use.

Which uses less memory?

Ollama, slightly. Its background service adds roughly 100 MB on top of the model, while LM Studio's desktop interface adds around 500 MB. Ollama also loads and unloads models automatically as requests arrive and can keep several warm; LM Studio's app is more manual, though llmster changes that on servers.

03 · For developers

APIs, headless servers and integrations

The old 'GUI versus CLI' split no longer holds.

Can LM Studio run headless like Ollama?

Yes. LM Studio 0.4.0, released in January 2026, introduced llmster, a headless daemon for servers and CI. You install it with a one-line script and start it with lms daemon up, with no desktop app required. That removed Ollama's biggest advantage for server use.

Do both work with the OpenAI API format?

Yes. Point any OpenAI SDK at http://localhost:1234/v1 for LM Studio or http://localhost:11434/v1 for Ollama and change the model name. That means tools built for OpenAI, including many coding agents, chat front ends and automation platforms, can run against either local server. Both also offer Anthropic-compatible endpoints.

Which works better with coding agents and MCP?

LM Studio has a built-in MCP client, so a chat in the app can call MCP tools directly. Ollama has wider integrations as a backend: it can launch coding agents such as Claude Code against local or cloud models and is the default local provider in many editors. For an always-on model behind your tools, Ollama is the more common choice.

04 · Verdict

Which should you choose?

Most people end up using both.

Should I use LM Studio or Ollama as a beginner?

LM Studio. You can browse models, see whether each will fit in your computer's memory before downloading, and start chatting without typing a command. Move to Ollama when you want other apps to call your models.

Can I use LM Studio and Ollama together?

Yes, and many developers do: Ollama as the always-on backend for scripts and editors, LM Studio for trying new models and comparing quantizations side by side. To avoid downloading a 40 GB model twice, you can import an existing GGUF file into Ollama with a Modelfile instead of pulling it again.

What hardware do I need?

The same for both. As a rule of thumb, a 4-bit 8B model needs about 6 to 8 GB of free memory, a 14B model about 10 to 12 GB and a 70B model 40 GB or more. Apple Silicon Macs with unified memory and PCs with a recent NVIDIA GPU give the best speed. Our local LLM guide covers model choice by hardware.
