What each tool is
Two agents with the same job and different defaults.
What is the difference between Codex and Claude Code?
Both are AI agents that read your codebase, edit files, run commands and tests, and open pull requests. Codex is made by OpenAI, runs on GPT models and is bundled into ChatGPT plans. Claude Code is made by Anthropic, runs on Claude models and is bundled into Claude plans. Both offer a CLI, a desktop app, IDE extensions, web and mobile access, plus subagents, hooks, skills, plugins, MCP servers and worktrees, so the real differences are the default model, price per task, limits and permission style.

Is Codex better than Claude Code?
It depends on what you value. On Artificial Analysis's Terminal-Bench 4.0 runs at default effort, Claude Code with Opus 5.5 scored 52.5% and Codex with GPT-6.1 Sol 48.0%, so Claude Code is slightly stronger out of the box. Codex did the same work for about a sixth of the cost per task. Many developers report preferring Claude Code since Opus 5.5 launched in late September 2026, but the best test is running both on your own repository for a week.

Among developers who use coding agents, 2026 Stack Overflow survey figures cited by Tech Insider put Claude Code at 65.5% usage and Codex at 29.5%. Many developers pay for both: the most common pairing is the two $20 plans.

Both start at $20; the gap opens on heavy use and per-token cost.
How much does Codex cost?
Codex is included in ChatGPT plans: limited on Free and Go ($8 a month), expanded on Plus ($20), and higher again on Pro at $100, $200 or $500 a month. Only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast mode, and Pro tiers have no five-hour limit. ChatGPT Business costs $25 per user a month or $20 billed annually. If you sign in with an API key instead, you pay standard API rates.

How much does Claude Code cost?
Claude Code is included in Claude Pro at $20 a month ($17 a month billed annually), Max 5x at $100 and Max 20x at $200, which give 5 or 20 times Pro's usage plus monthly API credits. Team Standard seats cost $25 a month ($20 annually) and Premium seats $125 ($100 annually). It is not available on the free plan. With an API key, Opus 5.5 costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens.

Which is cheaper, Codex or Claude Code?
Usually Codex. Its default model costs half as much per token, it has a free tier and an $8 plan, and Artificial Analysis measured about $0.21 per task against $1.34 for Claude Code at default settings. Switching Claude Code to Sonnet 5.5 ($2/$10) closes the per-token gap but not the per-task gap. At the $100 and $200 tiers, which plan lasts longer has flipped more than once in 2026, so check recent reports before upgrading.

How many messages do I get on the $20 plans?
OpenAI estimates 15 to 160 local Codex messages per five hours on Plus with GPT-6.1 Sol, depending on task size, and weekly limits can also apply. Claude Pro has a rolling five-hour window plus weekly limits, and heavy daily users report hitting them. If an agent runs most of your working day, expect to need a $100 plan on either side.

03 · Features
How they differ day to day
Safety model, configuration and openness.
How do Codex and Claude Code keep my machine safe?
Codex runs commands inside an operating-system sandbox (Seatbelt on macOS, bubblewrap on Linux and WSL2, and a native sandbox on Windows) with network access off unless you allow it, and an Auto-review preset can let a reviewer agent approve escalations. Claude Code uses permission modes, including manual approval, accept-edits, plan mode and an auto mode where a classifier reviews each action, plus a Bash sandbox on macOS, Linux and WSL2 and checkpoints you can undo with /rewind.

Do they use the same project instructions file?
Codex reads AGENTS.md and Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md. Both files hold the same kind of content: build and test commands, code style, and rules for the agent. If you use both tools, keep the shared rules in one file and point the other at it.

Is Codex or Claude Code open source?
The Codex CLI is open source under the Apache-2.0 license and written in Rust. Claude Code is not open source. Both call closed models in the cloud, so open-sourcing the CLI does not let you run Codex fully offline.

Can I use other models in Claude Code or Codex?
Both are built around their own vendor's models. Third parties such as Z.ai sell coding plans that plug their models into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other tools, and both agents can talk to local models through compatible servers, but quality and limits then depend on that provider.

Who should choose Codex?
Developers and teams already paying for ChatGPT, learners who want to start free, and anyone running high volumes of automated tasks where cost per task matters most. Codex Cloud, automatic code review and Codex Security Cloud also make it attractive for teams that want agents working while laptops are closed.
