What Is MCP? The Model Context Protocol Explained

MCP is the standard that lets AI assistants plug into your tools and data, from files and databases to Slack, GitHub and calendars. It is often described as a USB-C port for AI. Here is what it is, how it works and how to use it safely.

What MCP means

A shared plug between AI apps and everything else.

What does MCP stand for in AI?

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open-source standard that defines how AI applications connect to external data, tools and workflows, so an assistant can read the information it needs and take actions instead of only answering from its training data.

Why is MCP compared to USB-C?

Before MCP, every AI app needed a custom integration for every tool. MCP gives one standard connector: a tool that offers an MCP server can be used by any app that supports MCP, the way any USB-C device works with any USB-C port. The official documentation uses this comparison.

Who created and who owns MCP?

Anthropic announced MCP in November 2024; it was created by engineers David Soria Parra and Justin Spahr-Summers. OpenAI and Google DeepMind adopted it in 2025. In December 2025 Anthropic donated it to the Agentic AI Foundation, a Linux Foundation fund co-founded by Anthropic, Block and OpenAI, which also hosts goose and AGENTS.md.

02 · How it works

How MCP works

Three roles and a simple conversation between them.

What are MCP hosts, clients and servers?

The host is the AI application you use, such as Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, an IDE or a coding agent. For each MCP server it connects to, the host creates an MCP client. The server is a small program that wraps a tool or data source, such as a file system, a database, GitHub or a calendar. Servers can run on your machine or remotely.

What happens when an AI uses an MCP tool?

The client asks the server which tools, resources and prompts it offers. The server replies with natural-language descriptions and the expected input format. When the model decides to use a tool, the host sends the call to the server, the server performs it and returns the result, and the host adds that result to the model's context. Messages use JSON-RPC 2.0.

What changed in the 2026 MCP revision?

The 2026-07-28 revision removed protocol-level sessions, making MCP stateless: protocol version, client identity and capabilities now travel with each request. That makes servers easier to run behind load balancers and gateways, but not every change is backward compatible, so older clients may need an update or compatibility layer.

What you can do with MCP

Real uses people set up today.

What are examples of MCP servers?

Common servers give AI access to local files, Git and GitHub, databases, Slack, Google Drive and Calendar, Notion, Figma, web browsers and search. The official documentation's examples include agents that access your Google Calendar and Notion to act as a more personal assistant. By December 2025 the Linux Foundation counted more than 10,000 published MCP servers.

Which apps support MCP?

Support is broad: Claude apps and Claude Code, ChatGPT and OpenAI's agent tools, Google's tools, many IDEs and coding agents, and local tools such as Desktop Commander. Check each app's settings for an MCP or connectors section.

Do I need to code to use MCP?

Not usually. Many apps let you add a remote MCP server or connector with a URL and sign-in, or install a local server with one command. Building your own server does need programming, with official SDKs available in several languages.

04 · Security

MCP security risks

An MCP server is code that can act on your behalf.

Is MCP safe?

The protocol is a standard; safety depends on the servers you install and the permissions you grant. A server can read files, run commands or send messages with your credentials. Researchers have documented risks such as malicious or compromised servers and prompt injection through content a tool returns.

How do I use MCP servers safely?

Install servers only from sources you trust, grant the narrowest access (for example one folder rather than your whole disk), keep approval prompts on for actions that write, send or spend, and review what tools a server exposes before enabling it. In companies, route MCP through approved gateways with audit logs.
