What Is Generative AI? A Plain-English Guide
Generative AI is the kind of artificial intelligence that makes new things: text, images, video, music, voices and code. It is what powers ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and every AI image generator. Here is what it means, how it works, what it is good and bad at, and how to use it well.

01 · Meaning
What generative AI means
The short version, and how it differs from the AI you already used.
What is generative AI in simple terms?
It is software that has studied enormous amounts of existing writing, pictures, sound or code and can now produce new examples on request. You describe what you want in plain language, the prompt, and it writes the email, draws the image, composes the track or drafts the code. The output is new, not copied, but it is shaped by everything the model learned from.
What does GenAI stand for?
GenAI is short for generative artificial intelligence. You will also see 'AI-generated' used for anything a generative model produced, such as an AI-generated image, article or voice.
How is generative AI different from regular AI?
Most earlier AI was predictive or analytical: it classified, ranked or forecast things, like spam filters, recommendation feeds or fraud detection. Generative AI produces new content instead of a label or a score. Both use machine learning; the difference is the output. Agentic AI goes a step further and uses generative models to plan and take actions, such as running code or browsing, not just to write a reply.

Is ChatGPT generative AI?
Yes. ChatGPT is built on large language models (LLMs), which are generative models for text. It can also generate images and read files, so it is a multimodal generative AI product. Claude, Gemini, Grok, Meta AI and Microsoft Copilot are all generative AI assistants too.

02 · How it works
How generative AI works
Training, then generation. No magic, a lot of maths.
How does generative AI work?
Two stages. In training, a neural network with billions of adjustable parameters is shown vast amounts of data and repeatedly nudged to predict it better, until it has absorbed grammar, facts, styles and visual patterns. In generation, you give it a prompt and it produces output one step at a time from those learned patterns. Most models are then fine-tuned with human feedback so they follow instructions and refuse harmful requests.

How do text models like GPT-6 and Claude generate answers?
They are transformers, an architecture introduced by Google researchers in 2017. A transformer reads your prompt as tokens (pieces of words), works out how every token relates to every other, and predicts the most likely next token, then the next, until the answer is complete. Because it predicts plausible text rather than looking facts up, it can be fluent and wrong at the same time.

How do AI image and video generators work?
Most use diffusion. During training the model learns to remove noise from images; to generate, it starts from pure random noise and removes it step by step, guided by your text prompt, until a picture appears. Video models do the same across many frames while keeping them consistent. Earlier systems used GANs, two networks competing against each other, introduced in 2014.
03 · Examples
What generative AI can make
Five kinds of output, with tools you can try today.
What are examples of generative AI?
Text: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok write, summarize, translate and answer questions. Images: GPT Image 2.5, Midjourney and Gemini create and edit pictures. Video: Google's Veo, Kling and Wan turn prompts or images into clips (OpenAI's Sora was discontinued in 2026). Audio: voice and music models clone speech or compose tracks. Code: Codex, Claude Code and Cursor write and fix software.

What is generative AI used for at work?
Drafting emails, reports and marketing copy; summarizing meetings and long documents; customer support chat; writing and reviewing code; creating images and video for ads; research and analysis; and, increasingly, agents that complete multi-step tasks. McKinsey's 2026 survey of 1,719 respondents found nearly nine in ten organizations use AI regularly in at least one function, but only about two in ten have scaled AI agents across the business.

How do I get better results from generative AI?
Write a clear prompt: say who the output is for, give the model a role and context, show an example of what good looks like, and state the format and length you want. Then iterate: ask for changes rather than starting over. Our prompt guides and generators give ready-made templates for each major tool.
04 · Risks
Limits and risks of AI-generated content
Useful does not mean reliable. Know where it breaks.
What are the main risks of generative AI?
Hallucinations, where the model states false information confidently; bias inherited from training data; copyright and ownership disputes over training data and outputs; privacy, if you paste sensitive data into a tool that keeps it; and misuse such as deepfakes, scams and spam. Always check facts, figures and citations before you rely on an AI answer.

How can you tell if something is AI-generated?
Not reliably by eye. Some providers attach provenance signals: OpenAI adds C2PA Content Credentials and invisible watermarks to images and video it generates, and Google uses SynthID. Text detectors exist but produce false positives, so treat their scores as a hint, not proof.

Will generative AI replace jobs?
It is changing them. In McKinsey's 2026 survey, 39% of respondents expected AI to reduce their organization's overall headcount in the next year. The tasks most exposed are routine writing, support and data work; the roles that grow are the ones that use AI well and check its output.
