Descript Review: Is the AI Video Editor Worth It in 2026?

Descript lets you edit video and audio by editing a transcript, like a document. It is one of the best tools for podcasts, interviews, tutorials and talking-head video, and its AI features remove filler words, fix audio and even dub into other languages. 01 · What it is

How Descript works

Edit the words, and the video follows.

What is Descript?

Descript is a video and audio editor built around a transcript. When you upload or record, Descript transcribes it, and the transcript becomes your editing timeline: cut words, rearrange paragraphs or delete an 'um', and the media updates to match. You can still use a traditional timeline for fine control, and export timelines to Premiere, Final Cut, Pro Tools, Logic and Audition.

What is Descript Underlord?

Underlord is Descript's AI co-editor. You ask it in chat to do editing jobs, such as cutting a long recording into clips, removing retakes, writing titles and show notes, or tightening pacing, and it applies the edits in your project. Chatting with Underlord uses a few AI credits per message, so heavy use draws down your monthly allowance.

What AI features does Descript have?

Studio Sound, which makes rough recordings sound studio-recorded; Remove Filler Words; Eye Contact, which redirects your gaze to the camera; Green Screen background removal; AI speech and voice clones for fixing a word without re-recording; avatars; generated media; and dubbing into 30-plus languages, with a proofread workflow on Business. All of these spend AI credits.

02 · Pricing

Descript pricing, media hours and AI credits

Two meters: media hours for what you upload, AI credits for what the AI does.

How much does Descript cost?

Free is $0 with 60 media minutes a month, 720p watermarked export and 100 one-time AI credits. Hobbyist is $16 per person a month billed yearly or $24 monthly, with 10 media hours, 400 AI credits and watermark-free 1080p export. Creator is $24 yearly or $35 monthly, with 30 hours, 800 credits and 4K export. Business is $50 yearly or $65 monthly, with 40 hours, 1,500 credits and team features. Enterprise is quoted by sales and adds SSO, SCIM, audit logs and training opt-out.

What are Descript media hours?

Media hours measure how much audio and video goes into Descript: uploads and recordings count whether or not they are transcribed, and still images count as one second each. Retakes you record in Descript count too. Unused minutes do not roll over; the allowance resets when your subscription renews.

What happens when I run out of media hours or AI credits?

On Creator and Business you can buy top-ups. On Free and Hobbyist you cannot, so the only way to get more is to upgrade. Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words cap at 30 credits per use however long the file, which keeps them predictable.

Which Descript plan is best value?

Creator, for most solo creators. At $24 a month billed yearly for 30 media hours it works out near $0.80 an hour, half Hobbyist's rate of about $1.60, and it is the cheapest plan with 4K and top-ups. Business is worth it for teams that need shared brand templates, glossaries and dubbing with proofreading, not for 10 extra hours.

03 · How to use it

Getting good results in Descript

A typical podcast or tutorial edit, step by step.

How do I edit a video or podcast in Descript?

Create a project and upload your files or record directly in Descript. Wait for the transcript, then read through it and delete unwanted sentences, retakes and tangents as if you were editing a document. Apply Studio Sound to clean up the audio, run Remove Filler Words, add titles, captions and B-roll in the timeline, and export or publish. Every minute you upload or record counts toward your media hours, so trim long recordings before importing where you can.

How do I remove ums and filler words in Descript?

Use Remove Filler Words, which finds words such as 'um', 'uh' and 'you know' across the transcript and lets you delete all of them or review each one. It costs at most 30 AI credits per use regardless of file length, so it is cheap to run on long episodes. Review the result once, because removing every filler can make speech sound clipped.

Can Descript fix a word without re-recording?

Yes, with AI speech. You train a voice clone on your own voice, then type the corrected word or phrase into the transcript and Descript generates it in your voice. Voice clones are included from Hobbyist up and use AI credits. Only clone voices you have permission to use.

04 · Verdict

Pros, cons and who should buy it

A brilliant editor for spoken content, less so for everything else.

What is Descript best at?

Anything driven by speech: podcasts, interviews, webinars, courses, YouTube tutorials and screen recordings. Text-based editing saves hours compared with scrubbing a timeline, and Studio Sound and filler removal rescue imperfect recordings. Reviewers who have used it for years still rate the editing workflow as its biggest advantage.

What are Descript's downsides?

The free plan is small, with one hour a month and a watermark. Two separate meters, media hours and AI credits, make costs harder to predict, and frequent Underlord use can drain credits. It is not a replacement for a full effects-heavy editor for cinematic or motion-graphics work.

Is Descript worth it?

Yes if you publish spoken content regularly: Creator at $24 a month billed yearly covers four to eight episodes or videos a month comfortably for most creators. If you only need transcripts and not editing, a dedicated transcription service such as TurboScribe is far cheaper.
